(Austria) Jewish Museum of Vienna Exhibit on Ringstrasse: A Jewish Boulevard #austria-czech

Jan Meisels Allen

If you are visiting Vienna this summer you might find this exhibit of
interest.

The Jewish Museum of Vienna has an exhibit running through 18 October 2015
entitled RINGSTRASSE: A Jewish Boulevard. The Ringstrasse was created when
Emperor Franz Joseph dismantled the wall that had been there for many years
and replaced them with a boulevard-the Ringstrasse. Emperor Franz Joseph
issued a new law in 1860 that allowed Jews to own land-the first such law in
the Hapsburg Empire. Soon the Jews owned 44 percent of the privately held
lots around the "Ring". This year is its 150th anniversary and the Jewish
Museum of Vienna is celebrating it with an exhibit that depicts its history
which includes the many Jewish industrialists and bankers who built their
homes on the "Ring". The exhibit looks at the social rise of the Jewish
elite, the daily struggle for the masses of Jews and anti-Semitisms'
politics and its consequences. See:

Is anyone else having challenges using badatelna.eu? #austria-czech

rfc974@...

Hi folks:

Suddenly this past week I've had great difficulty using badatelna.eu.
Pages will refuse to load or only load partially. Then once in a
while, a page will load easily.

I wanted to see if I'm the only one or if others are having problems.
(I've done some diagnostics >from different parts of the 'Net -- I used
to help run a bit of the Internet in the 1980s -- but there's always a
chance it is my software that's at fault, which is why I'm checking).

Thanks!

Israeli with ties to Serock, Poland visits town #poland

Howard Orenstein

Recently, Tsvika PLACHINSKI, of Israel, visited Poland, including the
town of Serock. Read about his visit there and look at the photos he
took in town.

There is an interesting photo of an official marriage certificate stamp
and Rabbi Josef LEWINSTEIN's (Levinshtayn's) signature and his personal
stamp, dating to 1897.

South Africa Databases on Facebook #southafrica

Ann Rabinowitz

I have created a number of small databases related to South Africa Jewry and they
have been posted on the Jewish Genealogy Portal site on Facebook. In order to
find them on this site, you should go to the top right of the page and click on
the search engine "SEARCH THIS GROUP" and then plug in my name. All of my posts
will then pop up.

Two of the databases will eventually be placed on the South Africa SIG site on
JewishGen.
