New: American and Canadian rabbis in collection at YIVO #rabbinic

Seflaum@...

Dear Fellow Rav-SIG Members:

We recently discovered the existence of the Samuel Ephraim Tiktin
Collection in the Archives of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research
in New York. The collection, dating >from circa 1930 to 1949, includes
several hundred biographies of rabbis compiled by Tiktin for a
"Universal Rabbinical Biographical Encyclopedia," which was never
published. Biographies include rabbis >from the United States, Canada,
England, Germany, Hungary, Palestine, Poland, and the Middle East.

The list of 205 American and Canadian rabbis now online was compiled
by a professor of Jewish history who visited the YIVO Archives several
years ago and contributed the list after reviewing the collection.

We are indebted to Rav-SIG member Stephen Falk, who visited YIVO and
obtained the list, and to Fruma Mohrer, Acting Chief Archivist at
YIVO, for granting kind permission to reproduce it and providing
resource information.

The list may be accessed >from the Rav-SIG home page in the "What's
New" section: http://www.jewishgen.org/Rabbinic/

or directly at:
http://www.jewishgen.org/Rabbinic/databases/tiktin.htm

KULMAN/SEARMAN-TOWN OF BAUSKA #latvia

BFis705275@...

Grandfather Max KULMAN studied with Rav KOOK in Bauska, Latvia.
He left in 1905 and left his mother Pauline KULMAN behind.

I was told that at that time (1905) all Jews were moved into
the interior. Where would that have been.

I can find no info at all on my family. I hired genealogist
Alexsander FEIGMANIS and he found nothing. I wrote to the
Latvian Archives, again nothing.

Any help would be appreciated.

When my father, Sigmund Rosenfeld, and his brother arrived 1904 to New =
York, coming >from Peczenizyn, two other brothers had already imigrated =
from Galicia to this town - Karl (Charles) and Isidor. Isidor never =

Is there a way to find any of Karl's offsprings?

Allan Falk <salfalk@...>

Dear Teri,

According to Margolinsky "J=F8diske d=F8dsfald i Danmark" I
can inform you, that Sally Isak Salomon died October 5th 1882
and is buried on Mosaic Nordre Kirkegaard in MG-1.
His wife Birgitte, born Levy died March 10th 1883 and is buried
in MG-2.

The son could be identical with Bernhard Berendt Salomon, grocer,
who was buried in Mosaic Vestre Kirkegaard November 9th 1922.

As for Pauline there are both a Pauline and a Cerline Pauline,
both unmarried, who died in 1911 and 1910, do you have more
specific information?

Best regards

Allan Falk

Re: Hamburg to Montreal #general

GAYLEANNE@...

In 1890, my ggm sailed, w. 4 of her children, >from Hamburg to
Montreal via England. I found them on the Hamburg Emigration
website, Link to Your Roots.

The site is:
http://www.hamburg.de/fhh/behoerden/staatsarchiv/link_to_your_roots/english/index.htm

Currently, it covers 1890 to 1900.

They traveled fro Hamburg to East Grimsby, and were bound for
Montreal. I have the record >from Hamburg, but have not been
able to locate them on a ship >from England to Montreal,
although I know that they did enter there.

If your family came somewhat later, you may wish to check the
website of the Poor Jews Temporary Shelter in London, where
people were sometimes housed while waiting for their ongoing
passage. It covers something like 1893 to 1914.

The web site is:

http://chrysalis.its.uct.ac.za/shelter/shelter.htm

There were most likely ships going directly >from Hamburg to
Montreal, as well as via England.

Hope this helps.

Carol Rider <crider@...>

If anyone will be going to visit Riverside Cemetery, located in Rochelle
Park, New Jersey I am in need of a look-up. I have a map of the cemetery
with the exact location of the gravesite, so it will be an easy grave to
locate. If you are able to take photos of the gravesite I will gladly
re-imburse you for whatever your expenses may be; otherwise I would even be
content to have you write down the information in Hebrew and pass it along
to me.
