I think this mail provides an opportunity to point out how useful it is

information mentioned about the person and the family - but his actual
name is not mentioned at all ...

Could the mystery word have been Yiddish for number 5, which my Mom tells me
sounds like "finif"? Perhaps they lived in the fifth house in Gernichovsky?

My husband asked his grandfather to write the name of his shtetl in
Russian. He wrote Nezhin Gernichovsky Fuvf. With the help of Naomi Fatouros,
we were able to learn much about the shtetl, but we still don't know what
Fuvf means. I have transliterated this word, Fuvf, according to the way the
Cyrhillic sounds when my husband reads it to me.

It was quite interesting to see photos of Nezhin at this URL, that Naomi
passed on to us for our edification:

Nezhin is in the Chernigov area, so "Gernichovsky" should probably be
Chernigovsky. Could you scan the handwriting and post it to Viewmate? Maybe
some of us can help decipher "fuvf".

Announcing a new feature, the "ViewMate Image Gallery" #galicia

Bernard Kouchel <koosh@...>

Since ViewMate's inception 27 months ago, over 2150 graphics have been
uploaded to the site, to assist researchers with their graphical queries.
Now an enhancement has undergone a period of testing and is readily
available for your use.

All graphic uploads will be viewable for 7 days (as before). Thereafter the
graphics will be archived (permanently) in a new searchable archive known
as the "ViewMate Image Gallery". This will give researchers the ability to
seek additional help with their queries, and allow others to browse in the
gallery.

To browse the gallery, go to http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ and click
the "Archive" button.

If you have not visited ViewMate before... see
http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/
JewishGen participants seeking commentary or problem solving advise from
others, are encouraged to use ViewMate for the posting of Jewish genealogy
related graphics. Here you can post...
- Photos: for identification of people, clothing, buildings, scenes,
objects, artifacts, etc.
- Letters, documents, book pages, maps, etc. for analysis or translation

We extend our gratitude to Programmer/Webmaster John Berman for the
enhancement and to Sam Eneman, Coordinator, who quietly work behind the
scenes to keep ViewMate operating so flawlessly. Further enhancements are
being contemplated.

Is anyone else having problems accessing this website

for the London Gazette archives? I am very, very eager to explore the
information. I have tried two different computers (one Mac and one PC). The
PC was more successful, but I still could not view some of the archives. Any
suggestions?

Thank you,
