(USA) Small Jewiish Communities Trying To Stay Afloat #general

Jan Meisels Allen

In today's (July 19, 2011) Jewish Daily Forward there is a story about small
Jewish Communities across the United States trying to stay afloat. As
genealogists we should be aware and concerned as the history of the Jews in
the towns, cemeteries, synagogues, the history of synagogue activities
(Bar and Bat Mitzvah's, weddings, etc) are all part of tracing the history
of our ancestors.

Shalom,

Yes, you! If you happen to be familiar with basic html coding, have some
free time available and would genuinely like to help out our rapidly
expanding Yizkor Book Project, I would be more than very pleased to hear
from you. The work involves converting Word files submitted to our team into
our standard format web pages and if you do feel ready to take this on, here

Why St. Louis? Tulsa and other Jewish immigrant destinations beyond New York City #general

Some not yet mentioned resources regarding Jewish immigrants who settled in
the Midwest and other destinations beyond New York City include:

~ IAJGS Bibliography of North American Jewish Community Books

~ Jewish Encyclopedia "Agricultural Colonies in the United States"

~ AJHS Industrial Removal Office Records 1899-1922
The Industrial Removal Office placed struggling Jewish immigrants arriving
and living in New York City into Jewish communities throughout the United
States and Canada, finding them work and often providing loans for travel
and board. Over 79,000 immigrants were assisted through the office during
its operation between 1901 and 1922.

~ Personal family documents, such as "Brettschneider--A Family Chronicle"
A large branch of New York City Brettschneiders looking for business
opportunities heard of a small town in northeastern Connecticut in which was
located the world's largest thread mill, a British-owned corporation called
the American Thread Company. Built in the 1850's at the falls of the
Willimantic River, this company began hiring large numbers of
Polish-speaking workers. Being proficient in Polish, the Brettschneiders
opened a grocery store near the mill where the workers lived and the rest is
history as they opened other businesses - tavern/liquor store, supermarket,
restaurants, furrier, pharmacy - and became a prominent family in the
business life of Willimantic.

Dear all,

Here are the details of new book that looks fascinating:

Stanford University Press, 2009. xiv + 325 pp. $55.00 (cloth), ISBN
978-0-8047-5584-9.

You can read its review at:

Useless to say that I have not any financial interest in that announcement.

Finding sources to research Rabbi Avigdor ben Hayim #rabbinic

Joshua Levin

How can I find the information listed in the footnotes of this book?
Studies in Pinsk Jewry (1983) by Wolf Zeev Rabinowitsch
In particular, the book states on p. 106 that "His son was a dayyan in
Pinsk." footnote 117

#116 N. Israelit, 'Mishpahath Israelit,' Pinkas Kletsk, p.51, Tel Aviv 1959
#117 Entskilopediyah Yisraelith, Vol. I, a.v.: Avigdor ben Yosef-Hayyim,
Berlin 1928
H.A. Bikhovski, Ginzei Nistaroth, Or Rav, p.7, Jerusalem, 1924

I am looking for any information about the descendants of Rabbi Avigdor ben
Hayim (or ben Joseph Hayim) of Pinsk in present day Belarus. He was the
chief rabbi of Pinsk >from about 1785 to 1793. My family lore indicates that
we are his descendants, but there is a gap >from him until about 1850 or 1860.

Thank you!
