Dear members,

I have posted both sides of a 1912 postcard to Viewmate. There is a
handwritten message on both sides of the card which I believe is
written in Finnish. I am hoping someone can translate this, including
the names (difficult for me to read).

Look at Viewmate #21446 and #21447

Half Second Cousins and Family Finder, etc. #dna

sbloom@...

Its extremely difficult to triangulate using Family Finder unless
each cousin you match also has an extremely good paper trail for all
of their lines (unlikely). The reason is that for each new cousin,
you introduce all of the relationships they have >from other lines
that have little or nothing to do with you (save for connections >from
the distant past). So the bottom line is that in some cases, you will
be adding more "noise" (lines that have nothing to do with you)
than "signal" (information that would lead to you determining a
relationship).

With that caveat though, I would still say that trying to get , say,
at least 2 cousins >from every branch you are interested in might be
helpful. I think half second cousins might still work. I've had some
6th ish cousins who showed up related (but distant) and some who did
not. If you are very interested in this branch, and you have the
money to pay for it, I'd say you should go for it, but only if you
realize now that you may only get "incremental" results (that is,
only find out a few pieces of the puzzle and not the solution to it).

Also, perhaps mentioning the rabbinic family involved (here, and
perhaps on Ravsig) would help. Some us are working on DNA of rabbinic
families (I am working on a project related to the HALPERN family). I
dismissed my Dad's claims of our family yichus, and only very
recently, after searching many Polish records, cemeteries, and
rabbinic books, did I find solid links to 2 different rabbinic families!

Steve Bloom
Central Virgnia

Genners,
I am fairly new to DNA testing. In April I did the family finder test
and my mtDNA. After learning that my DNA confirmed that I was 100% Jewish
and that I had a large number of matches, I started testing cousins to try
to triangulate my results (so that I could figure out which matches came
from which lines). I then tested my second cousin on my father's side and
our match came out where it should. Because one of my second cousins once
removed is elderly and not in good health, I tested him next, and the
suggested relationship was "distant" cousin according to family tree DNA. I
ran the same data through GEDMATCH.com and the suggested relationship (using
their defaults) was 3.5 generations to MRCA (most recent common ancestor) -
which would be consistent with second cousin once removed. It appears that
we may only be related in one way, which means that the correction factor
for inbred populations - lost a true relationship (I think that this is what
would be called a type I error). This extra distance has not helped with
the triangulation.

In particular I am a suspected member of a Rabbinical family >from my family
finder results (until now I have had no Rabbinical ties in the 40+ years of
paper trail genealogy). My grandmother apparently told my mother that she
had "Yichus" but no one ever knew how). I am especially interested in which
line this Rabbinical family may come through, and my grandmother is my
leading candidate.

Now my paternal grandmother was the only child of a widow who married a
widower, there are descendants of her half siblings, who would be my 1/2
second cousins. Given the problems that showed up when I tested my second
cousin once removed, is it worth it to consider testing them to help
triangulate? I would be able to find one male 1/2 second cousin on her
father's side and a female 1/2 second cousin on her mother's side.

I am interested in what your thoughts are about this. I have not contacted
these cousins yet, because I don't know if it would be worthwhile.

Congrès Paris 2012 Généaloj

Dear friends,

Our program is expanding. Every day we receive new exciting proposals. At
least 200 hours of lectures and meetings are already scheduled. No time to
be bored whatever your area of interest or your language : every hour you
will find at least a lecture, a workshop, a film or a SIG meeting concerning
this area. And if you really do not find any, why not visit the resource
room, the vendor's room or one of our exhibitions?

Make sure to be there on Sunday morning and not to leave until Wednesday
evening because our program will start at top speed and the latest lecture
on Wednesday night will be no less exciting than the first ones or the ones
proposed on Monday or Tuesday.

JGSLA Mon. Feb. 6 - Ron Arons "Putting Flesh on Bones: New & Improved!" #general

Pamela Weisberger

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles invites you to
our next program:

Monday, February 6, 2012 at 7:30PM

"Putting Flesh on the Bones: New & Improved" with Ron Arons

Toyota USA Automobile Museum
19600 Van Ness Ave., Torrance, CA 90501

(Note: Location is also convenient to the South Bay and Orange County
areas of Los Angeles)

Why limit your self to simply expanding your family tree by looking
for names, dates and places? Beyond the questions Who?,When?, and
Where?, it is possible to explore the far more interesting questions,
WHY? and HOW? Why did our ancestors behave the way they did? How
did they have an impact on us? In this presentation Ron provides two
related examples >from his own research experience on how this process
works.

Ron Arons has given entertaining presentations on genealogy across the
country for many years. In 2008, Ron published The Jews of Sing Sing,
about Jewish criminals who served time at the famous prison in New
York and appeared on the PBS TV special The Jewish Americans,
discussing famous Jewish criminals of Manhattan's Lower East Side. In
2010, Ron published WANTED! U.S. Criminal Records. These books and a
line of Black Sheep of the Family products are available on his
website, http://www.ronarons.com.

JGSLA members free. Guests $5.00. The JGSLA traveling library will be
available at 7:00PM and refreshments will be served. More details and
directions at: http://www.jgsla.org
