JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

To everyone who replied to my questions about the words "desconocida" and "varios," I would like to say a big thank you. Some of the replies were quite funny and illuminating, so a special thanks to those of you who made me laugh.
It seems I wasn't clear enough about what I was after. Rachmiel Spivak is a member of the family I'm writing a book about. I know a good deal about him, and for sure know he is Jewish, >from Orgeyev, and though I do not know much about the young man he traveled with (most likely a cousin), I do know that Rachmiel brought his wife and sons to Mendoza, where he and Fanny had a third child. Rachmiel and Fanny both died and are buried in Mendoza. In 1921, after their father died (Fanny died first), the three sons emigrated to New York to join the by-now American family of their uncles, aunts, and cousins, who they probably didn't remember but who they'd heard about, I'm sure. So my curiosity was about why two Russian Jews would be listed as "varios." And what the other odd designations might have signified. It was not just literal translation I was after (of course I use Google translate for that all the time), but an interpretation, an idea of why this would have been written. Many of you offered interpretations--thank you! And if anyone recognizes these names among their extended family in Argentina, I'd be very happy to hear >from you. I've already connected with two families, one in Buenos Aires (with a branch in Spain) and one in Mendoza, who are directly related to the Spivak / Spiwak family of Bessarabia. If only it was easier to search immigration records in Argentina! Happy searching to all of you, Patricia Patricia Klindienst Guilford, CT USA SPIWAK /SPIVAK, BURD, KALIK, MILSTEIN, GOLDENBERG of Orgeyev, Kishinev, and Capresti; Mendoza, Argentina. SCHAPOSCHNIK / ZAPOSNEK of Orgeyev, Kishinev, Elisavetgrad, or Mendoza, Argentina; and their related names, SHAPIN, SHAPIRO. BELINKSY, SCHOCHETMAN of Odessa (who became SCHACHT in the US). I am writing wearing my VP of IAJGS "hat". One of the responsibilities of
the IAJGS Membership Development Committee is to look at areas with significant Jewish populations that do not currently have Jewish Genealogy Societies. The country of Mexico is one area that has a substantial Jewish population (Wikipedia reports the number of Jews in Mexico at over 68,000, and over 20,000 in Mexico City alone) but no where in the country are we aware of any Jewish genealogy society. If anyone is aware of Jewish genealogists in Mexico-or organizations that exist that might be interested in sponsoring a society it would be appreciated if you shared their information with me. If any of this SIGs readers located in Central or South America are aware of other countries that do not have a society and believe there is interest in starting a society please also contact me. I have their departure records from Hamburg, 16 December 1909, so now I know how long it took for the crossing. But I am baffled by certain notations in the list that contains their names. For Religion the immigration official has described Rachmiel and Schije as "Varios." Can someone tell me what this meant at the time or guide me to sources that may help me understand how to read Argentine immigration records? I see what appear to be two ways to designate Jews on this list of eight other people named Spiwak on the list: "Hebrea," for Prywa Spiwak who arrived in 1931, and "Israelita," for Rifke Spiwak, who arrived in 1909. Other religious designations include: Ortodoxa; Catolica; Greco Ortodoxa; and Desconocida. The first would be Russian Orthodox, the second Roman Catholic, and the third (obvious) Greek Orthodox, yes? But what does "Desconocida" mean? The term also appears twice in the column headed "Born in," for other immigrants, which is confusing. Has anyone else found such markings on records for their families emigrating to Argentina? Stories, comments and translations would be very helpful. Thank you. Dubin-Johnson Syndrome
#dna
William Yoffee
Is anyone familiar with the Dubin-Johnson Syndrome as a Jewish genetic
condition which is said to be common among Persian and Morroccan Jews in Israel? As I understand, it results >from a recessive gene (ABCC2) that can occur in both parents to become dominant in their offspring. A male second cousin of mine by the half-blood (my paternal grandfather and his paternal grandfather were half-brothers >from the same paternal great grandfather) has been diagnosed with this condition, which apparently is often not serious. However, both he and I are interested to know whether someone male or female who has this condition can pass it along to the next generation either as a recessive or a dominant gene. DNA Research #DNA Dubin-Johnson Syndrome
Re: Where to find advice on using DNA testing to check a specific tree

Marsha Epstein <marsha.epstein@...>
On March 11, Israel Pickholtz asked how to get his questions answered
about whether DNA testing would be helpful to resolve issues in his family tree. If you join a project, the project administrator is usually very helpful with this type of question. Go to the Projects page: http://www.familytreedna.com/projects.aspx and find an appropriate project. On each project page is a link to send an email to the Group Administrator.
