Wife or wives of R' Tzvi Hirsch Landau of Opatow #rabbinic

lreich <lreich@...>

Isak Gath posted on this site:-

"R' Tzvi Hirsch Landau (Hirsch Vitts of Opatow 1640-1718) was married,
according to "Letoldot Hakehilot Bepolin" of R' Tvi Hirsch Hurvitz of
Dresden (and according to many other sources) to Sara Oettingen
(Ittinga, in old Jewish spelling). Sara was the daughter of the
physician Dr. Naftali Hirtz Oettingen of Przemisl. However, in the Web
site of the commercial genealogy site "Geni", another wife, Chaia, is
mentioned. I have checked around and could not verify by any reliable
source that R' Tzvi Hirsch Landau had two wives. However, in a family
tree diagram in the book "The unbroken chain", this chaia is drawn as a
daughter of Dr. Naftali Hirtz Oettingen. Is this the source of the
misleading information? "
I came across this seeming contradiction many years when researching my
ancestry. I prefer the version proposed by Rabbi Hurvitz, who was a most
reliable genealogist.

The suggestion that R' Tzvi H Landau's wife was called Chaya seems to
have emanated >from the Hebrew work on Brody by Gelber. Gelber makes this
Chaya (or Chaia) a daughter of Eliezer Littauer (d. 1741) and Chana
(d.1736). Eliezer was a son of Yissacher (the first "BABAD") whose father
was the renowned R'R' Hershel, Chana a daughter of Zvi Hersh Rav of Lublin
and Lvov, who died in 1690 and came >from the Klausner clan.

These dates do not meld well with those
of Rabbi Landau, hence my preference for R' Hurvitz's version. I think
that Neil Rosenstein in the "Unbroken Chain" erred on this point.

Rabbi R' Yitzchak of Hazenpoth 1830s #rabbinic

Ben Forman

Hi Genners

Lev Ovchinsky's Courland book briefly mentions a Rabbi Yitzchak in
Hazenpoth who would have been Rabbi around 1835, it reads:

"The rabbi the genius R' Yitzchak was accepted there as rabbi, but due
to the arguments and controversies there he left Hazenpot and was
accepted as rabbi in a Polish town. (This is what I heard.)"

It doesn't give any more information - is anyone familiar with this Rabbi?

Thanks as always

Re: Prince Otto 1811 Courland Residence document #latvia

Rita Bogdanova <clavel@...>

Hello,

The document you are talking about was set up in 1811 and says that the
person was not registered in the Jewish community before. By that time those
who lived around without documents and not registered were seized and
brought to the authorities. In this case the it was made by forester Otto.
No Lord, no Fuerst but simply forester...

Sincerely,

Hello,
My wife is German and she said that that translation is not correct....
ist nirgends verzeichnet gewesen means "he was nowhere registered"
"kürzlich eingezogen" does not mean to be moved, but to be drafted, as into
war.
Also, Fursten does not mean Prince. "Prinz" means prince.
A "Fursten"is an overseer of a large area of land such as a Lord.

so a more accurate translation is, "he was nowhere registered and was sent
to war by Lord Otto."
