Re: Why is Suesskind a kinnui for Alexander? [Final message on this.] #germany

Ellen Barnett Cleary

Moderator note:
This discussion has wandered off the topic of German Jewish genealogy.
Please continue discussion via private Email. ===============>

Someone on this forum pointed out to me that the citation I gave about
the name Alexander gave an incorrect Talmudic reference. For that
reason, I reached out to Alexander Beider, the author whose book I used
for that citation.  I also asked him if he could answer the original
question, Why is Suesskind a kinnui for Alexander.

He was gracious enough to answer me and I wanted to share what he told me.

1. I'm not sure about the inception of the link between Sueskind &
Alexander. For me, the most plausible scenario is the following one.
German Jews started to use in the everyday (vernacular) life given names
Suesskind 'sweet child' and Su(e)ssmann 'sweet man' already in the
Middle Ages certainly because of their pleasant meanings. Since every
man should have a shem ha-qodesh, every vernacular name (kinnui) was to
be  attached conventionally to a shem ha-qodesh (i.e. Hebrew or Aramaic
name or one of a few Greek names considered "shem ha-qodesh": Alexander,
Kalonymos, Todros). Very often links were done just because of the
initial letter. For Alexander Jews also used his short forms
Sander/Sender that start with "S". This could be the reason why some
medieval rabbi decided that Sueskind & Su(e)smann can be considered
kinnuim for Alexander.

2. I took the reference to Berachot 99 for the form Alexandri >from the
book by Kolatch "The Complete Dictionary of English and Hebrew first
names" that is a standard popular dictionary of Jewish given names.
After receiving your letter, I checked this reference in a scholarly
work, "Lexicon of Jewish Names in Late Antiquity. Part II: Palestine
200-650" by Tal Ilan (2012). She gives references >from the Jerusalem
Talmud, Berachot 2:3, 4d; she takes them >from a compilation of the
Talmud made (in Hebrew) by Rabbi Kosovsky. Thanks for indicating me this
incorrect reference!
