ID PHOTOS VM11009 and VM11010 of TER FAMILY in Paris, France #france

Louise Gross

Dear Genners,

I would appreciate any help identifying the people in the photos VM11009 and
VM1010 on file at http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview.html

They are pictures of my Uncle, Aunts and families. The name of the studio,
printed on the back of the picture of a woman with a little girl was
P.MANDEL located in Paris , France.

My Mother's brothers , Leibl and his brother Reuven TER, emigrated to France
from Poland before WWII. I now know, >from a very kind and fast response to
my original post, that Leibl, his wife Elke nee' TOIS, and their daughters
Rachel and Lucienne were all naturalized on Jan. 26, 1926. Leibl was born
in Nagochewa and both Elka and Rachel were born in Goworowo. Lucienne was
born in Paris. I still don't know what happened to the little boy in the
picture. There is a Serge TER listed, born in 1912 who was naturalized in
1940, but he was born in Bakou, which seems a long way >from Goworowo. Also
listed is GEMAJNER TER born in Ostrow in 1889 and TER nee' SREBRNIK born in
1896.

Leibl and his wife Elke are listed in Klarsfeld's Deportation of French Jews
and I have a copy of the receipt , signed by my Uncle, for money and
valuables taken >from him at Drancy.

There is no mention of a Reuven TER, but a David Wolf TER is listed both in
Klarsfeld's book and YadVashem's list of victims >from Auschwitz. Yad
Vashem's list gives the name of his parents as Hersch and Leah TER (my
grandparents) and his place of birth as Poreba, Poland in 1904.

I would be grateful for any information about the the subjects in these
photos or if anyone knows of any TERS living in France whose ancestors are
from Poland.
Please contact me directly at lulux@....

A very special THANK YOU to all the volunteers at jewishgen who worked so
hard to help this particular computer novice. Your work has already given
me information to repair some of the broken links in the chain
and it has been a pleasure working with you.

Sincerely,
Louise Gross

WWII archive: additions #belarus

Vladimir Salita <vlasal@...>

Dear Researchers,

I have to make some clarification about new WWII Russian archive and site.
This is a searchable database compiled by Russian Defence Ministry based on
their military documents.
It contains ONLY military personnel (officers and soldiers) killed or
disappeared during WWII 1941-1945.
Soldiers were drafted usually between ages 18 - 35.
No civilians or Holocaust victims are listed.
Search usually returns many pages of results especially for common names.
That site is very overloaded and still under construction (some features do
not work).

I can easily transliterate names for your search, but I cannot perform the
entire search.
Having transliterated surname and - very desirable - first name you can
search and looking through results and recognize the name.
Result consists of first, patronimic and surname, DOB, date of death, last
residence.

Good luck,
Vladimir Salita

Sephardic DNA -- new book "Abraham's Children" #sephardic

Jon Entine <runjonrun@...>

Hello. I'm the author of a new book on genetic anthropology/genetic
genealogy: "Abraham's Children: Race, Identity and the DNA of the Chosen
People". Those interested in using DNA to trace your own identity or
exploring the history of the Israelites, genetically and culturally, and
their impact on modern society might find this book of interest (or not!).

I believe you may find the sections on Sephardic history/genealogy/DNA of
interest. I discuss the "Ornament of History" in some detail and why
Sephardic Jewry was so well respected in Christian Europe for so many
centuries while Ashkenazi Jewry was not.

As for Abraham's Children, it's received fascinating reviews and
commentaries. Kirkus Reviews called it: "An epic tale of 'The Chosen
People'....Engaging and informative reading for Jews and non-Jews alike."
Another reviewer compared it (very favorably) to Jared Diamond's "Guns,
Germs and Steel," which won a Pulitzer Prize. I've posted reviews and
commentaries (>from Washington Post, Slate, National Review, Ha'aretz, etc.),
as well as background on me and my speaking schedule, at the website for the
book: http://www.abrahamschildren.net. It also includes biographical
information on me, details of where I'm speaking, etc. If you have any
questions, would like to start a public or private dialogue, or even find
mistakes in the book that you'd be willing to share with me, please do so.

For those of you who believe this post is inappropriately "commercial," I
apologize. Yes, I would love for sales to be good, but the realistic fact is
that I won't make a penny of any sales, as I don't earn anything on the book
until my advance is met, and I can safely say that's not likely to happen.
But I do believe establishing a dialogue on the critical issues of human
bio-diversity are critical, and that's what the book is devoted to bringing
about. I believe I succeeded in doing just that in Taboo. Whether I have
succeeded in this book in that quest, you will have to be the judge.

Regards,

Jon Entine

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Jewish Records
Indexing-Poland, I want to wish Carol Skydell the very
best upon her resignation/retirement as Vice President
of Special Projects for JewishGen.

Often a conversation between Carol and me was the
first line of communication for any number of matters
affecting JRI-Poland and JewishGen. Even if we did not
always agree, Carol always tried to find a way to make
things work. I'm sure I will be one of many, many
people who will miss Carol's presence at JewishGen.

Best wishes to Carol in her life and endeavors.

Radomysl #ukraine

David Jacobs <djacobs@...>

I recently discovered that my paternal grandfather came >from Radomysl. My
great grandparents names were Tzvi Hersh Nebolsky and Goldi
Greenspoon (or Greenspan) Nebolsky.

I have looked at the Radomysl website. No mention of them but it
was a fairly large community with
a large Jewish population. Is anyone aware of any type of list >from
the nineteenth or early twentieth century
such as a tax list or any other type of list that might have the
family listed. There is a business list on the Radomysl
website but they are not on it.

Apparently my grandfather had a brother who stayed in Europe and
was killed in the Holocaust. He is not
on the list of victims on the Radomysl page, but he may have moved to
another town prior to WW II.

David Jacobs Thanks,

Carol Skydell Resigns As Vice President - Special Projects #ukraine

Susan E. King <susan.king@...>

It is with very deep emotion that we publicly announce Carol Skydell's
resignation >from JewishGen as a Vice President.

Carol joined the JewishGen volunteer corps when we first met her back in
Washington, DC at the 1995 conference. Over the years, Carol has taken on so
many roles and worn so many hats that it is next to impossible to recount them
all.

What we can recount is her undying loyalty and commitment to JewishGen over the
last 12+ years. Her energy and her creativity can be seen in so many areas
throughout this organization as it just continued to grow. And trust some of
this growth was in spurts! Big ones!

Rewinding to 1995, the internet was fast becoming a reality rather than a
figment of our imagination. Carol was so very instrumental in this pioneering
effort that we see today as JewishGen. As with any new venture, the pioneering
spirit required overcoming the hills and valleys, always so difficult when the
road ahead is not defined. It required flexibility in thought and deed, being
able to think 'outside the box', as they say. Carol was truly there every step
of the way! And most important, she has been a trusted and loyal friend and
supporter, making this announcement ever so difficult to write.

We can suppose that at the ripe young age of 82 (?!), Carol has chosen some
other "battles to fight" and "hills to climb" that have become very dear to her.

On behalf of all of us at JewishGen, there truly are no words to properly thank
her for her 12 years of service to this organization. We wish her Godspeed into
the New Year and in her new ventures.
