Decision on Memorial to Deportations from Vienna #general

Fritz Neubauer

The Viennese Railway Station "Aspangbahnhof" in the third Viennese
district >from was the station >from which about 50.000 Jews were put on
47 transports to various places, among them Theresienstadt and
Auschwitz. The station had not been used since the 70's and was totally
demolished recently. So far there was only a very small memorial place
on the site that carried the name "Square of the victims of
deportation". Now the results of a competition for a more representative
memorial have been announced: The architects Fischer and Naumann >from
Germany have been declared winners with their proposal of constructing a
deep moat as memorial.

The full text of the announcement and nine pictures of the area in its
present and future state are accessible >from today's net edition of the
Viennese daily "Die Presse" under the address

http://www.diepresse.at/diashow/default.aspx?id=539247&channel=c&template=e

The second picture shows a pre-war photograph of the old railway station.

With kind regards

Schlomo Katz asked about manifest notations on deported immigrants.
I suspect that LPG really was LPC which was "Likely to Become Public Charge"

If the immigrants had less than $50, or were unaccompanied females,
they were detained until someone came to Ellis Island and vouched
responsibility. If you find an "X" at the far left, before or in name
column, it means that the immigrant was temporarily detained. I would
advise Schlomo to look on the detainee page (at the end of the ship’s
listing) as you will find lists (sometimes typed) of detainees, with
more information, including reason for detention and how many meals
they had. Detention was also caused by minor illness (for
example: pink eye).

If you are lucky, you’ll see "S.I." or "B.S.I." at far left, before
the name. This signifies that the Subject was held for Board of
Special Inquiry hearing. Three immigrant inspectors took sworn
testimony and heard evidence related to the immigrant's case.
They met to decide whether someone should be admitted or deported.
Appeal, if any, could follow in further Court proceedings.

At Ellis Island about 20% were detained, but only 2% of all passengers
were deported. If your ancestor was detained, although the odds are
low of finding a transcript, write to INS/USCIS/Homeland Security under
the FOIA (freedom of information act). State that you are requesting the
Alien File or A-File. Provide full name, including any variants in
spelling, approximate date of birth, previous residence, information
on when they arrived, name of ship, etc. For deportations, request
assistance in location of early medical records on aliens placed in
deportation; explain it is a genealogical search, not a matter presently
or shortly in the Courts; include your SSN and an explanation of your
relationship to the deportee.

I must admit that I’ve tried this with little success, but it
certainly seems worth the effort; perhaps someone with positive
experience can add to this posting.

Jill Newmark wrote about a relative who appears simultaneously on two
seperate passenger list databases. There may be a simple explanation.

I had a family member whose name appears seperately on both the Ellis Island
and Boston Harbor databases for different ships but with the same departure
date, Oct 26, 1923.
It turns out that her name did appear on an Ellis Island manifest, but it
was clearly crossed out with a horizontal line thru the center of the record.
She clearly must have made a last minute change and took the other ship to
Boston. That did not prevent the crossed out New York entry >from being entered
on the Ellis Island database and her name appears on a database search as if
she had taken the ship to New York.

Farming near Tarnobrzeg, Poland #general

Shlomo Katz <SKatz@...>

My great-grandfather may have been a farmer in the area of Tarnobrzeg,
Galicia (now Poland).
Does anyone have information about the incidence of Jewish farmers in
that area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries? Does anyone know
what crops might have been grown? I am particularly interested to know
if rice was grown there.
Thanks

Hi.

There is an info file about detained passengers on JewishGen that may
be of some help:

The main page for it is http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/Manifests/

There is an abbreviation list at
http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/Manifests/bsi/causes.html

Perhaps you can look through the abbreviations to see if something is
a better match?

Searching for Surviving Prisoners of Buchenwald Along With Menachem LIMOR #general

Rachelle Berliner <rlberliner@...>

Menachem LIMOR is a Shoah survivor. Recently, there has been an article
about him on Cincinatti TV news. Menachem accomplished a feat that could
benefit other Shoah survivors. It is possible that some genners may have
been in Buchenwald with Menachem, or are descendants of Buchenwald
survivors.

For additional Holocaust information about survivors and their stories,
please refer to "Jewishgen Info Files."

Anyone who would like to read the entire article is invited to contact me
personally. I will be happy to send it. It is never too late to provide
information that will benefit a Shoah survivor.

Shalom,

Have you tried to search
"The Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names"
which you can find at: www.yadvashem.org

I am sorry to say that I found a
Roza SOLEWICZ n=E9e SZWAJCER
daughter of Aron and Lea
married to Berl SOLEWICZ!

The submitter's relationshsip to Roza is "niece", and she writes
in Hebrew, so she presumably lives/lived in Israel, and as she
submitted the information in 1991, there is a chance that she
is still living and to be found.

However, I fear that it was perhaps you who submitted the information?
But if not, I hope it can be of some help.

Best wishes

My father & his brothers was born in Bedzin / Poland between 1903-1913.
They moved to Miechow on 1918.
My father and one of his brother came to Israel 1934-1935, leaving their
parents and family, most of them were murdered in the Holocaust.
My father was so deeply sad and only told us that he had a sister name Roza

During my research I heard that his sister and her new family lived in

I was taken aback by the repeated anachronistic occurence of "Orthodox
Jews" in the translation above, partly because there was no other kind
of Jew in 1812. Dollars to doughnuts, this is someone's effort at
rendering "Starozakonye", which is literally "Old Law [persons]", but
in fact means only "Jews". Polish Catholics used the term in reference
to their "new law", while the translator imagined a distinction
between supposedly "old-fashioned" and more "modern" Jews.
