Re: Birds of a Feather - Kiev Gubernia #ukraine

Olga G. Parker <ogparker@...>

I would be interested in a "Birds of a Feather - Kiev Gubernia" group. My
interests are in the Ovruch area and the small towns surrounding that town,
and Radomysl' and the area around it. GLOSMAN (and variations) and PALEI
(PALLAY/PALEY) are among my names of interest. WARSHAVSKY is another name,
and I think they came >from Radomysl' and Zhitomir. My paternal grandparents
came to this country in 1903 (grandfather) and 1905 (grandmother and 2
children), 1909 (an uncle and one of my gm's sisters). So my interests are
all pre-World War II.

Dear Genners:
I too would be interested in joining a Birds of a Feather Group that would
include Korostyshev and surrounding areas. My great grandparents and their
12 children all came >from Korostyshev and immigrated to Tronto, Canada
between circa 1904 and 1910.

Moshe,
If you want to start a Birds of a Feather Group for Kiev gubernia
(including Korostyshev, Zhitomer, Koristan, etc. area) I would be glad
to join. As you know I have WINARSKY's on my PACKER (PEKER) Family
Tree. I don't have the slightest idea of how to start a group myself.

Dear All,

I'd also be interested in the possibility of forming "birds of a feather"
groups. My interests in the Ukraine are:

(1) The area of Tecs, Chust, and Sziget in Zarkapatska Oblast,
Ukraine and Maramures, Romania (former Austro-Hungarian
Marmaros in SubCarpathia), family surnames DAVIDOVITS,
CHAIMOVITS, KATZ, ZELMANOVITS.

(2) The Kiev gubernia (possibly Korostychev area), family surnames
WINARKSY, SHURMAN.

I.O.F.S. of I. Progress Lodge in 1880 St. Louis #general

Martin Fischer

When I was in St. Louis a few weeks ago, I started reading the earliest St.
Louis Jewish newspapers on microfilm in the St. Louis County Library. The
first thing of interest I found was in a column of short items concerning
local people in the Jewish Tribune of Jan. 16, 1880. It noted that

L. Kober (Louis KOBER) was the newly installed treasurer of the
I.O.F.S. of I. Progress Lodge.

I assume that this was either a Jewish fraternal group or a labor union, but
does anyone know what the full name and purpose of this organization was?

Re: PRONIN and INDUCH/YENDICK #belarus

Schelly Dardashti <dardasht@...>

Arthur PRONIN of Houston TX asks about PRONIN.

This is a Mogilev name, also found in nearby Chaussy.
A few years ago, I did a story on the Oleg and Svetlana PRONIN family,
immigrants >from Mogilev (about a decade ago), who live in Beersheva. They
are related to the YENDICK/INDUCH family in suburban Detroit.
The story about the YENDICK (in America)/INDUCH (original name in Belarus)
name is that the family name refers to the blue dye (indigo), and that "a
long time ago," the family was in this business in Amsterdam and other
places in Europe. This story was directly >from Oleg, who was told by his
father and grandfather.
For information on the PRONIN name, see information below >from another
PRONIN researcher.
There is also a GINSBURG (my own cousins, also >from Mogilev) connection in
Sioux City, Iowa.

Arthur, do you know your great-grandfather's name or any of his siblings?

There are at least two other PRONIN researchers.
I have their emails if they are not listed in the JewishGen Family Finder.
Helaine Baldwin in New York is a PRONIN researcher, through Isadore (Itchke)
PRONIN.
Oleg's family in Beersheva descends through Ita, daughter of Shmuel David
Moisevich INDUCH/YENDICK/INDYK, who married Yona Shmuelevich PRONIN, Oleg's
parents.
Davida Gersten Loewenstein of Lincoln, MA, is another PRONIN descendant. Her
grandmother, >from Mogilev, was Rachel bat Avrum PRONIN GERSTEN, she had 11
siblings.
Davida wrote to me that she had been told that the name PRONIN came >from a
nearby river of the same name.
The name Yona is common in her family, and was also the name of Oleg's
father, his grandfather was Shmuel.

In case others on our Belarus list are searching these families, this is how
Oleg PRONIN is related to the INDUCH/YENDICK/GINSBURG/PINSKER/SELBY etc.
families.

Tombstone transliteration - "resh"? #general

Laura Ma'oz <pedocare@...>

In transliterating the following name on a tombstone, what is the
relationship of Ephraim to Mordechai: Mordechai rav Ephraim ben rav Yaakov.
The tombstone is very clear - there is no "bet" before the "resh" between
Mordechai and Ephraim. I already checked the infofiles and discussion group
archives. Thanks for any assistance. This is for the JOWBR project.

Huehnerauge has a medical meaning: clavus, therefore the meaning is someone
who is specialiced in excision of clavus, not necessarily a medical doctor,
having no own office, performing this kind of surgery at the home of his
