I am researching information about my grandfather's family HAMERSCHLAG
who lived in the german town of Treis an der Lumda (in Hessen) today a
part of the city of Staufenberg.

My grandfather Hermann had 4 sisters -Julchen , Recha , Jenny , Rosa
and his parents were Jettchen Harth and L=F6w.

The family dedicated to the cattle and corps trade and later my
grandfather had a shop in Frankfurt. I know that the family were Kohanim
and that there were also other HAMMERSCHLAG families in Treis.

I would appreciate if anybody can share indormation about my family or
the other families >from Treis.

INTRO-researching CHLEBOWSKY,BOSS, BOWOS(?) from Frankfurt am Main #germany

Paul and Cathy <berlbean@...>

Hello GerSig,
I recently joined the group. I have been doing genealogy research for
2 years. Most of this time I have been researching our Galician
ancestors and am just now moving to our German ones. So, I consider
myself to be a novice in doing German Jewish Genealogy research.
I live in Dallas, Texas, USA. My native language is English and I also
know Spanish and my husband can read simple German. I consider myself
expert in using a computer. My experience in using the Internet is
extensive.

I know that our ggf, Philip CHLEBOWSKY, was born 10 FEB 1853, somewhere in
Germany. (His NY death certificate said his parents were Eli CHLEBOWSKY
and Rachel BOWOS).
He married Jeanette BOSS. Their son, Elias, was born 12 DEC 1879 in
Frankfurt. They emigrated to the USA in 1880-I have the ship manifests.

At some point Philip and Jeanette had another son. We do not know his
first name-or his last name-because at some point, our gf Elias CHLEBOWSKY
changed his name to LEBOSS.

We don't know if his brother did the same or not. Philip died in 1906 and
is buried in Washington Cemetery (we have a picture of the grave).
We know absolutely nothing about ggm Jeanette BOSS.

My primary research goals now are to find out: what was Elias (CHLEBOWSKY)
LEBOSS 's younger brother's name and does he have descendents (our 2nd
cousins); anything about Jeanette BOSS.

On the other side of the family, we also have Minnie SCHLEIMER >from Danzig.
Our family lore says our gm emigrated at age 15, in 1890, >from Danzig. by
herself, to follow a boy. Her parents were Julius SCHLEIMER and Rachel
(SAMONY, SAMUNY, SIMONE )Minnie had brothers, Max, Benno, Walter, Solly,
Samuel, and a sister Amelia SCHLEIMER MARCHAND. Amelia's children
emigrated to USA in 1920's and we know about them. But nothing really
about the SCHLEIMER family >from Danzig.

WALTS GALORE #southafrica

PROBLEM 1:
Many of the descendants of Alexander WALT of Ukmerge
(Wilkomir), lived in South Africa. As did many of the
descendants of Benjamin Leib Walt also >from Wilkomir.
Whilst I know quite a lot about Alexander's
descendants, I know little about those of Benjamin.

One of Benjamin's sons was Abraham Jacob WALT (who had
an uncle known as Jekkel) who owned a hardware store
in Claremont, Cape, South Africa. As a young man
Abraham worked for Chuck JAWITZ who was married to
Celia WALT who is a descendant of Alexander WALT. Als
Abraham had a cousin Morris WALT.

Does anyone have any information which might in some
small way help me to establish whether a relationship
exists between Alexander WALT and Benjamin Leib WALT?

PROBLEM 2: The late Dr Alexander Walt (1923-1996) was
an eminent surgeon at Wayne State University. Does
anyone have any recollections or biograhical details
about this man (a descendant of Alexander WALT, see
above)?

PROBLEM 3: 'Sonny' WALT was a medical practitioner in
South Africa. He was also descended >from Alexander
WALT. What was his real name? Does anyone have any
recollections/bigraphical details about him?

PROBLEM 4: Thee was a firm called Walt&Gorfinkel in
Cape Town, South Africa. Does anyone know who was the
Walt in this name and also can anyone tell me anything
about the activities of this firm?

PROBLEM 5: Another harware store in Claremont: M. GENN
& Co. Was this owned by Meyer GENN who was married to
Lifsha WALT?

Any help on any of the above will be gratefully
received by me, Adam Yamey, London, UK<adamandlopa@yahoo.co.uk>

Dear Rom-Sig
First I wish to extend to all members the wish for a peaceful 5763.

Second I would like to share with all those who knew Nat Abramovitz my
sadness that he is no longer with us, but also to remember what an
interesting and fun person he was to be with.

Thirdly I have had some very good news >from Dan Jumara in Iasi

Dear David,
I've been to Botosani and researched the vital records there. What do you
think about that:

Marriage licence No. 244/ November 26, 1874, Botosani.
CUNE ROTINBERG, 26 years old, merchant, born in Roman, living in Roman, son
of HERSCU ROTINBERG, 56 years old, merchant, living in Roman, and of ALTA
ROTINBERG, 46 years old, living in Roman
marries
SEINA SIMA MISILEM (read like "mishilem"), 18 years old, born and living in
Botosani, daughter of ALTAR MISILEM, 55 years old and of RUHLA MISILEM,
deceised.

I'm really pleased about finding this document. On my opinion it is really
useful, stating at least 2 important questions:
- The Rotinbergs are >from Roman;
- The Sonenfelds/Rosenfelds prove to be, in fact, Misilems and they are from
Botosani.

Well, that's it for now.
Only good thoughts for you,
sincerely,
Dan

This is the marriage document of my grandparents, which is very exciting for
me.
But can anyone shed any light on the name MISILEM?

ViewMate 1757/1758 - tombstone translation requested #general

Ada Greenblatt <ada.Greenblatt@...>

About six weeks ago I cataloged the Jewish cemetery for the now
defunct Cong. Agudath Sholom of Cardondale, PA. Two of the oldest
tombstones are entirely in Hebrew and are faded (they are next to
each other and might be for husband and wife).

The photos can be found on JewishGen ViewMate
<http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview.html>
as follows:

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/source/vm1757.html

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/source/vm1758.html

Can anyone with a knowledge of Hebrew please see if the deceased's
name, date of death, and any other genealogically useful information
can be determined. VM 1757 requires X-ray vision and admittedly
is virtually well nigh impossible to decipher with the exception of
the first line and part of the second. VM 1758 is somewhat better
(for a good start, the name looks like Shmaryahu son of Yitzchak).

I have no connection with or relation to any of the burials in the
Carbondale cemetery including those that are the subject of this
message. My sole intent is so that I can submit the burial data
for as complete a plot as possible to the JewishGen On-Line Worldwide
Burial Registry (JOWBR).

In the next few days I hope to have more tombstone pictures on
ViewMate for my original hometown of Newburgh, NY.

***Please reply privately, not to the discussion group as a whole.***

I apologize that I will not be able to respond individually to those
who reply, so thanks in advance for your understanding. In less than
a week I am going away for six weeks. Before I leave I'd like to
submit to the JOWBR most of the burial data that I've been formatting
over the course of the summer, including Carbondale. Unrelated to
cemeteries, I will also be making an Excel file distribution to the
LitvakSIG Kaunas uyezd research group of the most recently translated
Lithuanian archival lists for the Kaunas district.

Joining the "chorus" you've oft heard of late, for those of you who
expect to take advantage of the JOWBR and other upcoming JewishGen
databases, your financial support of JewishGen is necessary 1) so
that new databases can go "live" sooner; 2) so that old ones can
continue to be maintained and expanded; and 3) so that the databases
and the other wonderful services that JewishGen provides, such as
ViewMate, can continue to be free to all.
