Geographical dictionary of places where Jews lived in Bessarabia and Transnistria #bessarabia

Yefim Kogan

Happy Hanukkah to all!

Here is an update for the Project 3 - Geographical dictionary of places
where Jews lived in Bessarabia and Transnistria.

- The current dictionary includes 175 places in Bessarabia and 12 places in
Transnistria as of 12/26/2011.
Please check the existing dictionary at
http://www.jewishgen.org/Bessarabia/files/projects/3GeographicalDictionary/J
ewish%20Population%20in%20Bessarabia.htm

Here are the sources of these dictionary (Bessarabia / Transnistria):
- Sir Martin Gilbert Atlas (same in Miriam Weiner's book Jewish Roots in
Ukraine and Moldova) - 79;
- JewishGen Communities database - 99 / 7;
- Russian Census of 1897 - 61 / 5

Other sources are >from personal family books, Revision List records, Yizkor,
etc.
I believe that we have now not more than half of the places.

Your participation in this project is very important - WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
ALL TOWNS/SHTEITLAKH/VILLAGES WHERE OUR ANCESTORS LIVED!!

Please look into the Dictionary and if you find a town you know about which
is not there, please send information to me, include your source of
information (book, Yizkor book, etc). Also if you see any errors in the
existing Dictionary, please let me know.

Thank you,

There was a presentation that mentioned this by a member of the German

Notarized eye-witness statement - Biala Podlaska #poland

taxtroll@...

I wanted to share this with the group. I knew they existed but this is
the first time I've seen one mentioning my family members. It's a 1957
notarized eye-witness account of the murder of my great-grandmother's
sister and three of her sister's sons. See by blog at
http://sharon-genealogy.blogspot.com/2011/12/fate-of-lejbzon-family-of-
biala.html
for a copy, translation, and additional information. This was sent to
me by a cousin living in Biala (a non-blood relative...his
great-grandmother was the sister of the husband of my
great-grandmother's sister Hulke TOKAR LEJBZON). I'm trying to find out
where he or his grandfather got it but communication is slow...he only
knows Polish and his internet access is sporadic and I only know
English. I already had the 1939 census cards for this family so knew
that they did not survive but this report is still shocking to read.

I listed a few questions at the bottom of the blog post but I'll repeat
some here. How reliable are these statements? Who was gathering them
and where are they archived? Were they coerced in any way? Could the
pit mentioned in the report have really been located at New Market
Square or was it more likely outside of town? If outside of town could
there really have been hundreds of witnesses?

Thanks for any additional information.

Re: New JRI-P data for Dobrzyn nad Wisla #poland

Barbara Rubinstein <barbara@...>

Yes Steve, it's common to use only Dobrzyn instead of Dobrzyn nad Wisla,
so your great-grandfather may have been >from there.
The surname Gold was common in Dobrzyn nad Wisla.

Barbara Rubinstein

Older JRI-PL records regarding my immigrant great-grandfather, Shaya
GOLD, say that he was >from "Dobrzyn".  There was a town of this name
in north central Poland (Plock gub.) not on the Wisla but on the
Drwca/Derwenz river, now part of the town Golub-Dobrzyn.

My question is, is it at all likely that someone identified in an 1881
marriage record as being >from "Dobrzyn" was actually >from "Dobrzyn nad
Wisla"?
