I noticed that folks were posting queries on the WEXLER Surname...
so while i was doing some research anyway, I looked through the
JewishGen Family Finder, ( http://www.jewishgen.org/jgff )
but couldnt find either of the two folks listed in the Family
Finder.

That puzzles me...why conduct the search on this discussion group,
yet not register on the JewishGen family finder??

Isn't that the best way to reach thousands of researchers?

Schwartztimma = Belaya Tserkov #ukraine

Alan Shuchat <ashuchat@...>

Schwartztimma is the name of White Church ment to identify Berdichev.

Bernis Kretchmar

I believe that should be Belaya Tserkov rather than Berdichev. Belaya
Tserkov means White Church in Russian. The memoir at
http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/stavishche.html refers to Belaya

As the peasants and serfs were taught to hate the jews - so too the jews

pograms, rapes, jew baiting [look it up] the military abuse, the police

For Leslie and anyone else who wants information about a particular ship, you
can go to this site, where you can find the microfilm numbers of the ship
manifests. I believe that the site also has directions for ordering the

Sorry folks, I made an error which one of our keen readers
immediately spotted. In writing the message about this town,
my eye wandered as I checked the available 20th century
records in Miriam Weiner's Jewish Roots in Poland. I wrote
the town name Sosnicowice instead of the correct one,
immediately below, i.e. Sosnowiec. The following message
now reflects the current picture regarding records for Sosnowiec.

The Jewish vital records of Sosnowiec only start in 1901 and
because they are less than 100 years old and are not in the
Polish State Archives (they are in the Sosnowiec civil records
office) they are not available to JRI-Poland for indexing.

However, according to Jeff Cymbler, prior to 1901, the events
in this town were registered in the records of the nearby town
of Bedzin. The Jewish vital records of Bedzin up to 1859
are available in the JRI-Poland database. >from 1860 to 1883
the vital record registers for Bedzin are in the Polish State
Archives branch in Katowice. As yet there is no project
underway to index the records in the Katowice Archives
under the JRI-Poland / Polish State Archives project.

I hope someone can quickly direct my next move productively. I've
received a photocopy of a page (#241) >from "the State of Minnesota,

So it looks like my maternal grandfather really became a US

Mrs. Wegner's theory is quite interesting: IDA derives >from VIDA!?.
Why would the 'V' >from Vida be dropped is quite mysterious, specially
considering that IDA in Spanish means 'journey', so it's a word for
itself, not much to do with 'life'. According to sources of certain
reputation, IDA is originally a Norman name, of Germanic origin. The
name is also associated with mount IDA in Crete.
Thanks
