SRRG Meeting #galicia

Lancy

March 18, SRRG'ers of Israel (Sukhostaw Region Research Group) got together
at Schelly Dardashti's with our coordinator Joan Baronberg who was visiting
Israel.

This meeting was a true success. There is a great difference
between e-mailing and meeting personally. We got the chance to
talk in a very pleasant, relaxed atmosphere, to exchange
information, experiences and informative material on our region,
and to build a more personal basis for future shared research.
Bless Joan for this initiative and Schelly for enabling it.

I am writing these lines to encourage members of other SIGs
living in the same areas to follow our example. I do believe that
such meetings advance our personal interest as much as Jewish
genealogical research as a whole.

Lancy Spalter
Kfar Tavor, Israel

Searching: PRESSER & ZIMMERMAN - Galicia, Ukraine
SPALTER & GRUNHUT - Galicia, Poland
GUTMAN & SLAVNY - Opatow, Poland
KANAREK & WAJNFELD - Sandomierz, Poland
GULIAK & RAVITZKY - Dubesar, Moldova
HOLZMAN & BORUCHIN - Pinsk, Belarus

Dear Friends,
I lost a number of email messages, including a recent post >from (I hope) a
French and/or Italian branch of my mother's family. If you are reading
this, please email me again. I haven't gotten very far in my search but
that may be because I don't know how to confirm whether someone is related
or not several generations back, and my mother unfortunately is paranoid
about my searching (and my brother is apathetic!). Some family!

LIPSTEIN - lost in war #general

m?boguslavsky@...

A friend of my grandmother asked me to post this message. This is a
translation >from Russian.

<< Before World War II, my mother, Frida Kagan (born Lipstein) lived in
Vilno, Poland. Her father's name was Meer or something like that. She
was born in 1900 and lived at Tropskaya street 8-6 or 6-8. Frida had two
daughters, Pesya (born in 1932-1934, it is me) and Hasya, about 8 years
older. She has been in contact with her relatives in New York and
London.

When the war began, Frida flew to Belostok with her daughters. I do not
know if she still had contact with her relatives at that time. In June
1941 I have been in a scouts camp near Grodno, my mother and sister
stayed in Belostok. The camp has been evacuated to an orphanage near
Penza; as far as I know, my mother and sister have been killed in a
concentration camp in Vilno.

May be, this story is for someone a story of his relatives.

So far, I have been unable to find any relatives. All I have >from my
previous life is memories and a piece of my cloth with the name
"Lipstein" written on it. This robe was a present >from my relatives.

In the orphanage, they have renamed me to Polina and changed my name
from Kagan to Krotova. They have preserved my father's name --
Issakovna.

Unfortunately, I can not access the internet by myself. Please, find me,
write me, if you can!

I am not sure that Polina can read in English. If you think that you
know something about her relatives or know how to find them, you may
write first to me.

I have also a picture of that cloth. I could scan it and mail on
request.

Hope to find someone!

PRAJS of Kielce,Poland #general

How come my grandfather's birth record, Boruch PRAJS born 1879 in the town
Bieliny(Kapital), near the town of Kielce, Poland is not listed on the LDS
film for Kielce.
If this is a small town near Kielce, where else would the vital records be kept?

Brooklyn #general

Hi, Hi,
Rockaway probably refers to Rockaway Ave Which crosses Sutter Ave
in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. The area was predominately Jewish
till the late forties when people moved to Long Island. There is a book
that describes the beginning and ending of the Jewish population of
Brownsville but I can't remember the title.

Good Luck

Just a follow-up:

Here's a picture of the Emporium building on Market Street:
http://www.sfmuseum.org/hist5/illus1.html

This is what it looked like after the 1906 Earthquake:
http://americahurrah.com/USGS/5.htm. I think the façade was salvaged.

People interested in San Francisco history might check the sfmuseum.org
website, which has many interesting photos.
