Re: Who is 'Belziszer Rebbe'? #general

Gaby Neuburger <neuburgerg@...>

Is is possible you are looking for the Belzer Rebbe - who is and was
(there have been several of them) the Rebbe of the Belzer Chassidim? If
so you might start by searching under this spelling on the internet.

Hope this helps

Pre-1940 Alien #ukraine

Leonard Markowitz <priluki@...>

I am aware about alien registration during and after 1940,
but my grandmother died in 1937, in Philadelphia, after
living in this country for 29 years. She was never
naturalized and never even spoke English.

My ongoing communication with the INS has not resulted
in success, as yet. However, I'm still pursuing this, since
I can't believe that a woman lived for 29 years in this
country and that the INS has no record of her existence.

I have researched the usual sources such as marriage
certificates of her children as well as her death certificate,
passenger list and immigration card. I still do not know
her maiden name and not knowing that prevents me >from
tracing her in her native shtetl.

I will again review information >from the ethnic banks in
Philadelphia. I feel certain that one or more of her sons
pre-paid and arranged for her passage to Philadelphia in
1909.

My grandfather was Naturalized early in the century, but my grandmother never
became a citizen until the 1960's. They were married when my grandfather
became a citizen. Would my grandmother been required to register? If so, this
maight help my search, as she never could remember what date and ship she
arrive on. I believe she was Naturalized under a special rule for such
instances.

Lezajsk #galicia

I have an aunt who is travelling to Poland right after
Passover. She will be going to visit at the grave of
Rabbi Elimelech of Lezajsk.

Does anyone know if the Jewish cemetary still exists
or was it destroyed during WW2? My father's family is
from Lezajsk.
Has anyone visited Lezajsk recently? Have you any tips
or suggestions I may pass along to her?

Please respond asap to ccolodny@yahoo.com

Coercing AOL 6 into sending plain-text e-mail #galicia

Kenneth Brody <kenbrody@...>

I have found two pieces of info on the "Unofficial AOL Email FAQ" as to
how to use AOL 6 and still send plain text e-mail:

<http://members.aol.com/adamkb/aol/mailfaq/#aol6html>

This describes the convoluted path you can take to get AOL 6 to send
plain-text e-mail. (9 steps long!) Note, however, that you must do
the last 5 steps every time you want to send a plain-text e-mail, so
I don't exactly call it a "solution".

<http://members.aol.com/adamkb/aol/mailfaq/netscape6/>

Since AOL purchased Netscape, they incorporated the proprietary AOL
protocols (there is no POP or SMTP support) into Netscape version 6
which is able to send plain-text e-mail.

Zolkiew #general

Reed <reed@...>

My mother has unexpectedly turned up a visa for my grandmother's sister.
It solved the dilemma of which town my grandmother's family came from:
Zolkiew or Zloczow. I could only go by the pronunciation of the town by
my father and his first cousin. The visa clearly spells my great-aunt's
town of residence as Zolkiew. This town is a little bit north of Lviv
(Lvov, Lemberg) and last night on the net I discovered the following
information which may be useful to other researchers of this town.

This town was sometimes called Zholkva - which is the same way it is
pronounced. However, in 1951, during the Soviet regime, it was renamed
Nestorov (sometimes referred to as Nestrov). In my almanac, which is
only 10 years old I found it as Nesterov. And to confuse things furher,
the present Ukrainian name is Zhovkva.

Henry James Goldston #general

Derek & Rosemary Wenzerul <Dandr@...>

Please can anyone help?

I have just found out that my great-uncle, Henry James Goldston died in
Bremerton, U.S.A. on 6 March 1921. I would be so grateful if there is
anyone living in/near Bremerton if they could look in the local telephone
directory just to see if there is anyone with the surname of Goldston still
living there or in the surrounding area. As usual, I am clutching at
straws but thought it was worth a try.

In addition, is there a Jewish cemetery in Bremerton? Or if not, what is
the nearest Jewish cemetery? I would like to write to them to see if the
grave has any details of the family.

Do hope someone can help.

With best wishes.
