help with research please? #southafrica

Leonie <leonie@...>

I am a member of the UK jgsgb and would be grateful if anyone could please
advise how to go about researching family who went >from the UK to South
Africa around 1879 until about 1890/9. I have been told they had an ostrich
farm in Oudtshoorn. The family originated >from Poland and the family name
is HERSON.

I have a copy of a naturalisation certificate (dated March 1890) which shows
the family was living at Schurfte-heuvel, Tarka in the Colony of the Cape
of Good Hope. My knowledge of South Africa is limited - is this in the
Oudtshoorn area?

At least one branch of the family returned to the UK at the end of
1890/early 1891.

I am also looking for help in tracing information on an Isadore FLACK who
emigrated to Johannesburg, to be a manager with a tailoring company, with
his family (wife - Cecilia and children - Anthony (Tony) and Shirley) in
1936. Isadore died in August 1940 and his son Tony also died (year unknown)
in South Africa. It is understood that Shirley did marry and stay in South
Africa.

Many thanks for any help with the above.

Lilian,
Its definitely possible. I am not sure if Herman has direct equivalents
in Eastern European languages. I know Henyk can be a Polish name for Henry.
My uncle Chaim, after whom I am named, was called Herman here. Genners w/
better background w/ names & languages could be better informative.
Good luck

Ucher a Russian Yiddish pronounciation for the Hebrew Asher which is
derived >from the word for "happy". In my uncle's name Asher had the Yiddish
equivalent "Zeilig" >from the German "Seeleg", so he was known as
"Asher-Zeilig". However, his English name was "Jack" >from "Jacob". Your
Asher's English name is anybody's guess.

Scheindel and Manya are frequently ocurring Yiddish names for girls and
even though some persons followed the custom of English names starting with
the same sound, it is anyone's guess as to what they chose.

I would guess that "Solioma" is probably how the writer heard the Hebrew
"Shlomo" which in English is "Solomon". Following the custom of starting
the English name with the same sound, "Sam" is reasonable as the same person.

There is also an Ucher Rosenfeld. Does anyone have a potential English
version of that name for me? The other two teenagers were girls, Shondel
and Mannia. Are there equivalents for those names too?

The manifest lists my great-grandmother and the four teenagers as having

David,
You can order them >from NARA, although I don't know the cost but they are pretty reasonable. The easiest way would be to go to www.nara.gov, look for the nearest regional office and e-mail them. I did this for my ancestor who came into Boston. I did not get the manifest at that time, but was told it was available.
Good luck,

Could this be a garbled form of 'Vinnitsa'? The latter is a small city,
not just a shtetl, southeast of Kiev.

Ellis Island Index #ukraine

Dear Listers,

As soon as you find an ancestor in the online data base be sure to obtain
the microfilm and read it for yourself. I used the index to find the family
but one of the children was not listed. When I looked at the microfilm it
was clear that tape had been used to hold the original list together and the
tape obscured the name of the missing child. I was able to figure that out
by the numbering system and a thin line of the bottom of the name peeking
out >from the edge of the tape. I was also able to verify that I had the
right family >from the future destination listed. No one in the family knew
any of the original birth names until I found this listing. With the date
of arrival you can order the correct film >from a local Family History
Center or library.

Yes, there are many. For example, I also read soc.genealogy.french in English.
There is also a French newsgroup in French. If you use Internet Explorer

I have found my grandmother and great-grandmother on the data base, but
not my great grandfather. Does anyone have any ideas for alternatives for
Mendel? Also, the residence for my relatives is listed as Ral (t). Any
ideas about where it si referring to, I thought it was Ungvar and I can't
find a Ral.

Thank you for you help.
Sincerely,
