you can also try translator.ru, and it works for many languages, not just
Russian. It's not perfect, but it'll give you an idea...

I use Netscape as many of us do, and they have in Netscape 6.1 a built-in translator. It will give a "gist" translation of the main ideas, and can translate French, GERMAN, Italian, Japanese, RUSSIAN, Portuguese and
Spanish to English. It also does other translations such as English to
Chinese.

translator for Russian and Ukranian #ukraine

Dorothy Kohanski <dkohanski@...>

Hi,
I noted that there have been requests for translations
of the above languages. One of the members of my JGS
(Orange County, California) does Ukranian and Russian
translations. I don't know if or how much he charges,
but if you are interested, I will be glad to send you
privately his email.

1775-1850.

" Parnash Hachodes " means in Hebrew, chairman of the Jewish Community.
The position is rotated every month among the dignitaries of the
community. Vilna also known as " Jerusalem of Lita " among the Jews.
In Lithuanian it is called " Vilnius "

Many Thanks

Dniester, not Dnieper River - Sorry for my Booboo #ukraine

Knud and Lorraine Bertelsen <klb@...>

Dear fellow researchers,

My Mother's health is seriously declining and I am barely keeping my head
above water. So I try and answer all my email immediately, and keep my
Inbox as clear as possible. But in my haste I made a stupid booboo.

Thanks to Jeff Knisbacher for pointing out that I really meant the Dniester
River not the Dnieper which is further east.

I have had several direct responses to my posting, but I just am not able
to reply to everyone at the moment, but thank you all for your
comments. Thanks Jeff, Herb, Steve, Stefan, Ed and Mary.

Herb asked for date details - as far as I know my GGM (born Vilna 1878) and
my two great uncles (then teenagers) fled >from Odessa in May 1921, but
their Father, my step-GGF, fled some months earlier. He had been in hiding
for about six months, and fled >from Odessa in October 1920.

My late great uncle's autobiographical notes are very interesting. My GGM
and the boys were smuggled across the river and then headed for Soroki
where they were arrested and taken to Otaki military HQ, jailed and
interrogated, and kept there for some time before they could get a message
(via a "citizen's committee") to my step-GGF who was in Chernowitz I think;
he eventually was able to have them released (probably by paying some sort
of bribe).

Kind regards
Lorraine Bertelsen
