Date
NARA #belarus

SUSAN POPIOL <BornFreeAgain@...>

I have received several emails sent directly to my personal email
address rather than through the Belarus group email address. I am
replying to the group because I think this information would benefit
many others.

The emails all involved queries about what NARA stood for. These were
initials I used in a previous email. These initials stand for the
NATIONAL ARCHIVES which is located in Washington DC. There are also
various regional offices open to the public. They do have a website
that provides extensive information on what kinds of data they have
available. They also list all regional offices. The website address
is: www.nara.gov

For anyone researching relatives >from New York State there are other
archives to consider. This is something I just found out about today.

There is the MUNICIPAL ARCHIVES which contains data >from New York City
and the five boroughs. They are open to the public. This includes City
Census data and much much more. The website address is:
www.ci.nyc.ny.us

There is the NEW YORK STATE ARCHIVES (also known as SARA) which is
located in Albany, NY. I don't have the exact website address at the
moment. If you type in the name in a search it should come up.

I found just browsing through all of these websites very informative and
educational. It gave me ideas for avenues of research I would never
have considered.

A million thanks to those among you who have, as always, been so
generous in your offers to help. A solution has been found for the
person in Brazil.

On her behalf, as well as mine, I am very touched and grateful for all
of you who reached out to help!

One doesn't have to be a non-Jew or a socio-path or even a reform Jew to be
the black sheep in the family. A few years ago my wife and I went to the
Brit Milah of a the grandson relative of my wife, a scion of a Galitzianner
family in Jerusalem. Of course Jewish Genealogy came up and the grandmother
of the baby whispered in my wife's ear about a cousin who went off and
married a "Litvak." OH the Shame!!!
David Gurtler

I can certainly relate to this thread. I recently heard >from a
cousin, who found me through the JGFF. I was thrilled, as was she.
I was ready to write up a success story! But I told her I wasn't
Jewish, and I have not heard a word >from her since. Needless to say,
I was hurt and disappointed.

Please keep in mind that the relatives you find may not be Jewish.

Hi Lisa:

Alot can happen in families, Jewish or not, and while
I can not speak for others, know that if you do not
try then there will be always be the thought in your
mind I should had tried. Rejection is not easy, and
in some instances a separation should be there for
othe reasons. Yet, there are many forms of being the
"Black Sheep" that the past actions of others has
caused the present situation. Realize that in its
fullest, and know at least you walk in peace.

Sincerely,
Edna McDonald

Re: TRANSLATOR FOR DIFFERENT LANGUAGES #belarus

you can also try translator.ru, and it works for many languages, not just
Russian. It's not perfect, but it'll give you an idea...

I use Netscape as many of us do, and they have in Netscape 6.1 a built-in translator. It will give a "gist" translation of the main ideas, and can translate French, GERMAN, Italian, Japanese, RUSSIAN, Portuguese and
Spanish to English. It also does other translations such as English to
Chinese.

translator for Russian and Ukranian #ukraine

Dorothy Kohanski <dkohanski@...>

Hi,
I noted that there have been requests for translations
of the above languages. One of the members of my JGS
(Orange County, California) does Ukranian and Russian
translations. I don't know if or how much he charges,
but if you are interested, I will be glad to send you
privately his email.
