ViewMate Translation: Polish & Yiddish #general

Shelly Crane

Dear Genners, I am hoping to find someone to translate two things for me.

One is the back of a photo of relatives in Israel. There is one word in
particular that is illegible because it appears to be crossed out. Any
assistance in deciphering this word (and the others would be most appreciated.

http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate file - VM5701

The other translation is a document ordered >from the Jewish Records Index
from Poland. I thought it was in Polish, but now have been told it's in "old"
Russian. Anyone able to translate?

Thank you,

JGS North Jersey meeting March 27 #general

Paul & Myrna Lewis <pmlewis6391@...>

Editing Photographs & Other Documents

Place: YM-YWHA of North Jersey
Date: Sunday March 27, 2005
Time: 2:00 PM

Many genealogists have gathered photographs and documents to go along with
our computerized family history records. It's a two-step process: first, we
have to put the actual "hard-copy" material into computer-readable form, and
then we often have to do some work on it before we include it in our
database. The first stage - scanning the photo or document into a computer
file - was discussed at an earlier meeting of our group. Now we're ready to
tackle the second part.

Bob Kraus, a long-time member of JGSNJ, will demonstrate some of the
photo-editing techniques available with fairly inexpensive computer
software. A key element of his presentation will be the assurance that
patience rather than extensive computer skill is the primary requirement to
producing these most worthwhile additions to your genealogy records.

The JGS meetings are held at the YM-YWHA of North Jersey, 1 Pike Drive,
Wayne, NJ. The Charles & Bessie Goldman Library will be open at 1:30 P.M.
to give those interested a chance to use our extensive resource center and
socialize. The program will begin at 2:00 P.M. There is no charge for the
program. All are welcome.

For information, or directions, contact:
Susan 732-752-3384, Judy 973-226-7049 or Paul 845-357-5567

Kalladey, Budweiser Kreis, Bohemia and Merging Family Trees #austria-czech

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

I first met Ruth Coman and Peter Barber [both SIG
members >from London] when I organised a
Bohemia-Moravia get-together on the occasion of Susan
Boyer's [California] visit to London in Sept. 2004.
Little did I know, that 6 months later our trees would
merge.

Ruth rang me yesterday and she asked about a grave in
Wahringer Friedhof, Vienna of Franzisca [nee LOEWY]
SCHUSSLER [umlaut on the U]:

Schussler Franziska, age 67, 18.08.1872, Gp 7 Grave
466

who was possibly her gt-gt grandmother.

We confirmed today that Franziska was indeed from
Kalladey and was the right person. She was described
as an "Oekonomiebesitzers witwe" [Estate-owner's
widow]. Her deceased husband was Joachim Tobias
SCHUESSLER.

My immediate reaction was that I also have
SCHUESSLER on my tree and then we realised we were
talking about the same family and Ruth had been
corresponding with my SCHUESSLER third-cousin in
Australia.

Peter Barber's tree is linked to Ruth's tree through
KAFKA and SALUS.

SALUS is linked to SCHUESSLER - Ruth's tree.

SCHUESSLER is linked to BACHRACH and
BACHRACH is linked to BIACH [Celia's tree - my great-
grandmother being Emma nee BIACH. Her sister Charlotte
married Joseph BACHRACH and Joseph granddaughter
married into the same SCHUESSLER family discussed
above]. QED

Peter also has BACHRACHs on his tree from
Leipnik in northern Moravia. As yet, we do not know if
the two BACHRACH lines are related

Moreover, Franziska's parents, namely the LOEWYs
from Kalladey, may be the same as the Kalladey
LOEWYS on Randy Schoenberg's and Jane Reber's
[both >from California] trees.

Kalladey, [Kolodeje nad Luznici] in the Budweiser
Kreis, Southern Bohemia, had 69 Jewish families living
in the village in 1793; all 69 families were
Schutzjuden and four families were named "Lovi".

It is cause for a celebration all around; were there
still a Jewish community in Kalladey, I am sure there
would be dancing in the streets tonight.

As SIG members Uri Meretz and Ray Minkus have both
written to me [and I have their permission to quote]
"bim bam bom" was also used in Hebrew songs - so
perhaps that is what they might be singing too.

With your cursor located anywhere inside the Email message

At the bottom of the subsequently displayed menu, you'll see
an item "Compose as Plain Text."

Click on this each time you send a message to any Jewishgen list.

The change applies only to the one message you're sending.
Your system goes back into the HTML default mode after you have sent it.

That solves the problem with plain text for Jewishgen lists

Sometimes, you may be quoting text pasted into your Email >from a web page or

"Ritchie Boys" (movie) tells of German Jewish translators in US Army - WW2 #germany

Gunther Steinberg <beagun27@...>

Recently, a movie called "Ritchie Boys" has been playing around the US.
Made by a German Film company, it tells the story of German refugees who
were in the US Army and trained at Camp Ritchie MD to become Interrogators
of Prisoners of War [IPW]in the European theater. I was one of them: 7th AD,
CCR. After seeing the movie I wondered how many IPW team members are still
around. They will all be 80 or older. Please write to me privately !

Ada since time is of the essence email KarenG (email below) and request a
photo and be sure to tell her the immediacy of needing the photo. In my
case they sent a Polaroid, but maybe by now they have the ability to send
it as an attachment.

If you need info or pictures >from Mt. Zion, please contact
KarenG@.... She is so very helpful. Not only did she send
me *free* copies of my GP's burial cards, but for a small fee she sent me
very clear Polaroid photos of the gravestones.

Does anyone in Manhattan, NYC have a digital camera that I can borrow to
take one tombstone picture at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Queens, NY? I have only
a film camera with no chance of starting and finishing a new roll anytime
in the near future. Time is a bit of the essence here because a data file
of 396 burials that I already submitted to the JewishGen Online Worldwide
Burial Registry (JOWBR) for the Kovner Unt. Verein is being temporarily
withheld until I submit a final photo.

INTRO - Seeking biological parents of mother adopted in Breslau #germany

Ronit <ronitw6@...>

Hello, I am a new member. I am searching for my mother's biological family.
My mother was born on 22.9.1922 in Breslau (today Wroclaw).

She had been in a Jewish orphanage in Breslau and adopted as a baby by
Herbert and Paula SCHAEFFER,who probably lived in Jauer.

from there the family moved to Berlin.
My mother never asked about het biological parents. She never wanted to know.
She passed away 4 years ago, and Tthen I started to search my roots. Where
could I start searching if I don't have her [biological parents'] surname?
Where and how could I find the adoption certificate?
I would be very grateful to have some direction.

Thank you, Ronith Witkovsky. Tel Aviv, Israel <ronitw6@...>

GRUENWALD-HERNFELD of Vienna #general

Traude Triebel of Wiener Neustadt, Austria wrote on

information that Sidonie GRUENWALD-HERNFELD was my
great-aunt. She was married to Oskar HERNFELD.
They had two girls: Lydia and Stella, born 1902 and
1905 in Vienna and they went to USA".

Apparently, Sidonie GRUENWALD-HERNFELD was the
sister of Gustav GRUENWALD who was Traude's
grandfather - who in turn was the son of Alois G. born
in Miroslav.
I believe that Sidonie is looking for Stella who might
have been in London in 1969.

Last week [11.03 2005] there was another posting from
Sabine Braukmann [Austria] asking for specific
information on Viennese families. On the same day, Dr
Gare LeCompte [Virginia] enquired about the urban
renewal of the Prague ghetto - he did receive two
interesting replies.

The important point I wish to make is that these kind
of questions are ideally suited for posting on the
Austria-Czech Special Interest Group {SIG}:

http://www.jewishgen.org/austriaczech

where we have plenty of keen members, who may have
links or suggestions. You are more likely to find
experts on this SIG than on the General Discussion
Group ... and you may even find a relative who does
not read the General Discussion Group messages. Most
of our members are highly focussed on our own specific
geographic area and do not belong to the General
Discussion Group and would therefore miss your
message. This might be critical.

Austria-Czech is the Jewishgen SIG which deals
specifically with Vienna and Austria, as well as the
one-time Habsburg Crown Lands of Bohemia and Moravia,
where many of the Austrian Jews originated. Under the
Habsburgs, Vienna, with a population of just under
200,000 Jews, was the centre of a huge Empire,
making it one of the most important Jewish cities in
the whole world. Many Galician Jews also settled in
Vienna.

Another great advantage of posting on the SIG is that
the members benefit and we may all find unexpected
links and vice versa. Interesting and fruitful
discussions may follow.

Sabine Braukmann has already been helped on her way to
solving the complex puzzle of the WEISS family
genealogy. She is hoping for a breakthrough shortly.

Hopefully, we should be able to Traude as well.
As a starter, I have data on Oskar and Sidonie
born 7.10.1875 and 12.8.1877. Dr Oskar HERNFELD lived
at the prestigious Viennese address: Opernring 23.
There should be many sources we could tap for her.
