What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?

How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?

My recent note regarding "Everything is Illuminated" mentioned my interest
in ZELINSKY. This name drummed up a very intriguing link still being investigated. If others of you are pursuing ZELINSKY and variants, mine are as follows: Bernard Zelinsky (my gggf) is an unknown. His son PINCUS (interpreted in the Mass 1920 census as ELIAS or some such) was a shoemaker, b.1877-1940, immigrated 2/15/1904 Southhampton to Ellis, and lived in Brockton, Mass (Plymouth County), USA. Closest I can interpret the Imm papers on Pincus, he identifies GORRIBIN (possibly GORUBIU) Russia as place of birth. He married Rachel Dorn (I know a great deal about the DORN side) prior to 1903 and had 3 kids, Bernard (Barney, my gf) Yetta or Etta and May. Anything here familiar? Love to share data. My recent note regarding "Everything is Illuminated" mentioned my interest
in ZELINSKY. This name drummed up a very intriguing link still being investigated. If others of you are pursuing ZELINSKY and variants, mine are as follows: Bernard Zelinsky (my gggf) is an unknown. My mother's sister-in-law was evacuated to Tashkent during WW ll, although I
don't know the details of that move. I do know that she remained there after the war, because my mother received letters >from her(she was the widow of my mother's brother). I was quite saddened to read Larry Brikman's assessment of
JewishGen's focus. He wrote on July 2, " Now, since the JewishGen website assumes that most people really only have an interest in the eastern European countries and so, don't expend any efforts in terms of finding records in the "stans" of western Asia." I would like to point out that we do have a Sefard SIG, a Latin American SIG,an Early American SIG, and a South Africa SIG, and we would be more than happy to have a Western Asian SIG if a group of individuals came to us with such a proposal. Much of what is online at JewishGen is there as a result of user initiative and reflects the time, energy, commitment, and financial support individuals are willing to provide. We would not turn down efforts to focus on the "stans." In fact, we would heartily welcome them! If Mr. Brinkman can access records in the "stans" we would be happy to work with him to computerize the records and display the material on the JewishGen website. You will receive copies of the Keidan records as soon as I get them translated. However, this effort needs to be a group effort and not that of just one person. We just finished translation for several towns with many records like Keidan and it was well over $200 to translate for a town with @700 records. Please remember that these records are availaable through the Family History Libraries of the Mormons but they are still in old Cyrillic which not everyone can read. I dealt with over 50 translators to find 5 who could read this script. I'll be happy to correspond (or speak to on the phone) with anyone who has concerns or questions. June 2002 update for Yizkor Book Project
I am constantly amazed that even when we have a "short" month, our staff manages to produce a huge amount of work. Lance Ackerfeld, our QA /HTML Coordinator, was away a good part of June; but he is so well -organized that the work flow moved along at a good clip before he left, during his absence, and after he returned and pulled it all together. Thanks to all the donors and translators who submitted their work early in the month so that it could be htmled while Lance was away. In June we were able to get online 3 new yizkor books, 12 new entries (11 of which were >from the Pinkas HaKehillot), and 11 updates. We now have 337 books and 419 entries on the translations page, <http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/translations.html>, where new material and updated books have flags for a month so you can easily identify them. We are pleased to announce that the Jewish Public Library of Montreal has been added to our database with 459 books, including17 books that are new to our database. Thus, there are now 1,027 towns in our database, 1245 books, 53 libraries, and 10,036 library call numbers. Thanks to Martin Kessel for updating the database. That is because Morris Wirth took the initiative to coordinate getting every town in that volume translated and his efforts are paying off. Any one else who would like to "adopt" a region can emulate his efforts. Please contact me for details. We are always eager to get additional translations of Pinkas HaKehillot chapters. When you decide to translate a chapter or submit a translation that was previously done, please send me an email with the town name, geographical coordinates, volume and page numbers where the chapter appears, and I will secure permission >from Yad Vashem. A Ukraine SIG Success Story!

I've been searching for the identities of various relatives >from photos in which they were only identified as "Cousin". You may already know about the page on our Ukraine SIG website at: http://www.jewishgen.org/Ukraine/Photo_Album/Most_Wanted/most_wanted.htm in which we can upload pictures of family >from the Ukraine. I sent in pictures of an unidentified "cousin" & her parents, & today I received an email from her son!! It has been 23 years since I first began my search, & it looks as if we will finally be in contact. What serendipity! JewishGen is an amazing facility! Use it well, & do try to keep it successful by making contributions to sustain it. I've noticed recently there has some requests information regarding the
Jewish Calendar. I bought an 800 Jewish calendar at a reasonable price and now even I have the information for everyone in my data banks. The program is not overly expensive and well worth you investment. My father was born in Kalinovka Ukraine, where his mother's family was from,
though his father's family was >from Litin. While interviewing his cousin on his mother's side about 10 years ago, he told me the stories related to him by his brothers how they were evacuated by train as the Nazis approached. that would make early summer of 1941. They traveled for days, and I mean days until they reached Tashkent. Some of the family stayed in Tashkent even after WWII for a number of years.
