I have a question that the answer seems obvious.
On the ship manifests there are columns that relates to the persons ability
to read and write. The notations on the ones that I am looking at are
overwhelming yes to both questions. I would have to assume that they are
referring to the persons native language and maybe Yiddish in the case of a
Jewish person.

Re: Reversing names #belarus

Adarelanab@...

I can only echo what Rachelle Berliner said about reversing names while
searching. I was searching for my father's (Yale Belinkoff) naturalization
record at the Laguna Niguel, CA, National Archives. Ultimately they were
found filed under Yale, rather than under Belinkoff. Certainly no one could
consider that a mixup of two possible first names.
Adar Belinkoff
Claremont, CA
Researching: BELINKOFF >from Gomel, Israel, Youngstown and Los Angeles;
CHARNAK >from Gomel, Ukraine, Youngstown and Philadelphia;
MAGIDSON >from Gomel, Youngstown and New York;
KLEINERT or Klein >from Gomel(?)
PINTCHUK >from Tomaszov Mazieowecki, Youngstown & Cleveland;
NUMBERG >from Lomza and Chicago;
GOLDER (GOLDFARB) >from Ostrolenka and Chicago.

Passports #ukraine

I would like to know what a person would need to supply to the controlling
authorities in the Eastern European countries and Russia in order to get an
approved passport before 1920. I am assuming that at minimum some record of
birth would have been needed.
I know that when my father came here in 1927 he had to answer verbal
questions asked by a person at the American Embassy in Lviv. One of the
questions was "how many legs does an American chicken have"?

As a guide at the Manchester Jewish Museum in Manchester
England one meets a lot of interesting people,today the following dropped
in my lap and I promised to help if I can, I have more information
available if I make positive contact.
Mr PADDINGTON >from the south coast is looking for his and his wifes
roots,His late Mothers name was Lillie AMOR she was born in Moss Side,
Manchester.
His wifes single name was Judith HARTE her Father was Arthur LEOPOLDHARTE
he was born on Cheetham Hill Road,Manchester 7th February 1898.
All the members of the family who could have helped are dead, and whenever
questions were asked over the years they were met with a wall of silence.
It is beleived that somewhere their forbears were Jewish hence the silence
it is assumed that they married out of the faith
the Paddingtons are eager to trace their lost family.
Any information please, at the moment I am the only contact.

Many thanks

---Since this is a wild guess, here goes. Look up Indur in Belarus, Its
current name I believe is AMDOR. It is south of Grodno. Grodno's
coordinates are 5341-2350.
Good luck. Howard Steinmetz barb@...

route to chicago in 1910 era #general

Marty Meyers <meyers01@...>

I'm told that someone came to visit relatives in Chicago sometime between
1905 and 1915, thought the new world was 'treif' and went back to Europe.

I find no record of him coming through Ellis Island. Can someone tell me
if there were other common entry points, during those years, for people
going to Chicago?

Thanks,

Marty Meyers

Dear Jerry & Sig,

We are especially lucky in the NYC area to have an enormous project accom=
plished by the Jewish Genealogical Society of NY This covers the many (t=
housands) of burial societies in the Metropolitan area. These include La=
ndsmanshaftn, Synagogues, Family Groups, etc. This list locates the buria=
l societies into the many
cemeteries in this area. =20

When you locate the cemetery you can contact it and find the plot of the =
group in the cemetery. This list is located on the Jewish Genealogical So=
ciety web page at www.jgsny.org. Click on the Cemetery Project and find =
the name of the group. The list will tell you in which cemetery or cemete=
ries the group had a plot. Frequently the originally purchased plot fille=
d up and the group purchased a plot at some other cemetery and in this ca=
se all of these plots are listed. =20

In this project, no individual graves are listed.

Some Belarus Resources for IAJGS conference attendees #belarus

Michael Steinore

For those attending the IAJGS conference:

Not knowing what they will have in the resource room,
I will be bringing three Russian language resources with
me:

1) A paper copy of a 1913 'Ves Bobruisk', essentially a yellow pages/white
pages directory which includes: train schedule for the L-R railway to Libau,
address listing for 400+ merchants, most Jewish, lists of Jewish doctors,
dentists, feldshers, etc. There's too much to mention. Covers the city of
Bobruisk only.

2) a paper copy of a Minsk gubernia gazetteer containing
the names of over 14,000 inhabited places in Minsk gubernia. Much more
information on this is at
http://www.angelfire.com/ms2/belaroots/mest2.html

3) Microfilm reel 24 >from the Extraordinary State
Commission Records. This reel contains holocaust
victim lists >from several towns in and around what is now
Belarus, many of them quite readable. For more info,
go to
http://www.angelfire.com/or/yizkor/rg22002m.html

and select the 'Notes on Reel 24' link.

I guess the best way to contact me would be by e-mail
if you feel these could help your research.
