Re: Ostrozec #ukraine

My mother in law has applied for some sort of compensation or pension based
on her having being in a ghetto or in an area that was persecuted by the
Germans (I am not sure which). She was living in Ostrozec, a "town" that
was in Poland prior to the war, then Russia then the Ukraine. Her
application was rejected as they had no record of any "action" in that
area. She says the Germans basically got the local Polish/Ukrainian boys
to do their dirty work.

Has anyone heard of this town or the area ? Or know of where I might find
some information about it ?

Do you have Sassmacken and Tukums records? #courland #latvia

bgephart@...

I just finished the last of my updates to the Sassmacken, Talsen and
Tukums pages for the time being. I've started an index to selected
vital records of Sassmacken and Tukums. I'd like to get all of you who
have received birth, death or marriage records >from the Latvian
Historical Archives for these communities to submit similar information
to what I have posted. Judging by the number of us and the size of our
families, we could have quite a nice list! Please take a look and let
me know what you think.

I also added excerpts >from a 1924 Latvian Telephone Directory.

New member - my family names #latinamerica

Michelle Frager <lulu_brooks@...>

Greetings,

As a new member of the Latin American SIG, I'm not sure how many are
already members I know and know me through the JewishGen
Europe-oriented SIGS. So may I introduce my family connections with
South America.

Between the two World Wars, my aunt Raizl TREIGER/TREGUER (other
spellings?) emigrated to Brazil. She may have come as a married woman
or she may have married there. We are not certain of her husband's
name - it may have been something like SHOICKET, or he might have
been a ritual shoicket. I think my father said they lived in Rio. (He
was greatly amused by the fact that their refrigerator was in the
living room or parlor.)

The TREIGER/TREGUER hometown was Snitkov (Snitovka) in what is now
Ukraine. It is south-west of Vinnitsa and Zhmerinka. The family later
lived in Zhmerinka and then in Mogilev-Podolskiy. All are not far
from the Ukrainian-Roumanian border.
In 1922-23, my father Yankev Idel TREIGER and his sister Ruchel with
her husband Fishel SHVAISBERG spent many months, perhaps a year,
waiting in Buenos Aires for permission to enter the US.

I believe that is the extent of our Argentine connection.

Of course the most important thing I hope to learn through the SIG is
how I might track my aunt Raizl TREIGER "SHOICKET" who lived in
Brazil - how to find documents that would show a woman's maiden name,
and where they are archived. I have a photo of her with her daughter
and grand-daughter "Shayla" and could post it to JewishGen's
Viewmate.

I look forward to participating in the SIG.

Best New Year's wishes,
Michelle Frager, NYC area, USA

HURWITZ(GUREWITZ)and RABINOVITZ Families #general

Milton S. GLassman <molar321@...>

I am new to the Belarus SIG and am researching my maternal grandparents who
lived in Smolyane(Smolyany)during the 1890's before emigrating to
Worcester,Mass. in 1906(grandfather) and 1908(grandmother&children).My
grandfather,Rabbi Zorach HURWITZ married Chassya RABINOVITZ. They had 6
children,Nathan,Goldie,Sarah,Simon,Solomon andMax(twins). I know nothing of
my grandfather's family as my mother never knew them.My grandfather was a
Lubavicher rabbi who served as a shochet in Smolyane but had no pulpit
there.
My grandmother had a married sister (name unknown)who lived nearby with
their mother, another married sister (name unknown)lived in Vitebsk,a third
sister moved to England and one brother who also lived in Vitebsk was a
chazzan.
Researching information about my grandmothers family is extremely difficult
and locating records/information for Smolyane virtually impossible. And how
does one search out family members whose married names they do not know?
I would appreciate any assistance you could provide and especially to hear
from anyone who shares family ties to Smolyany and/or would find any of my
information familiar or related to their own.
