Researching: RABINOWITZ / RABB / KAIM #general

Stephanie Gray <sealed@...>

I am searching for my Maternal Grandfather's Family. I have found a fair
amount of information, however, many of his aunts and uncles had changed
their name either by marriage or for business purposes. If anyone has any
information or helpful leads, I would be greatly appreciative. Most of the
family comes >from New York though some moved around to Massachusettes,
Florida and Illinois:

Jacob RABINOWITZ (born about 1857) and his wife Annie MICHELSON (born about
1859). According to various census records and a birth certificate record,
they came >from Kovno or Prussia or Russia depending on the record. I
believe they immigrated into the states around 1890 or 1891.

Jacob RABINOWITZ and Annie MICHELSON had 9 children

Lottie RABINOWITZ (Married George MILLER) Supposedly this is the
same miller of I. Miller Shoes in New York City

Roberta RABINOWITZ

Ruth RABINOWITZ

Herman RABINOWITZ (1882-1947) (married Viola KAIM) Changed his
name to Herman RABB

Joseph RABINOWITZ (born about 1885 or 1886) (married a woman with
the first name of Leah) (He may have been born in Kovno) He changed his
name to Joseph RABB

Sadie RABINOWITZ (born about 1890) (married a man with the last
name of ROSENTHAL)

Lawrence "Larry" RABINOWITZ (born about 1892) (married Irma
ENGLISH)

Helene RABINOWITZ (1895-1972) (married Herbert BERRENT)

Celia RABINOWITZ (1898 - 1987) (married Harry SIEGAL) (oddly
enough, Celia was listed in the 1930 census as being born in Russia which
suggests some of the family either moved back to Russia/Kovno or my
information for her is incorrect.

The second family I am looking for is the KAIM family specifically,
information about Viola KAIM (1885-1947). I have learned she had a brother
George KAIM (born abt 1887) who was married to a woman named Hazel and they
had a son named Maurice KAIM (born about 1917). It is possible Viola KAIM
also had a brother who died around 4 months of age named Lawrence KAIM
(1893)

Thank You for any assistance you may provide

Meaning of SHOSTAKI, SZOSTAKI #belarus

Robert Shustack <rshustack@...>

There are several shtetls in Belarus with the name SHOSTAKI, and
several in Poland named SZOSTAKI. I would guess that my family
name was taken >from these towns since several are not far >from

Does anyone know the meaning of the names SHOSTAKI or SZOSTAKI?

STOLOVITSKIS's of Volkovysk #belarus

Aline Lambert <alinemlambert@...>

Hello and happy new year!

I am a new member to this group, and also very new to
genealogy in general.
Still I found a lot of information on the Belarus and
JewishGen websites, and am now craving for more!

I am currently focusing on my grand-mother's family,
STOLOVITSKI's (or other spellings) >from Volkovysk
(Grodno Gubernia). Please contact me if you have any
links to this family, or information!

Also, I am trying to get precise information about
(1) my father's birth in Berezna in 1940;
(2) my grand-mother's wedding in the area in 1935;
(3) the death of her parents, who still lived in
Volkolvysk in the early 1940's but died during the war
- we don't know how and when.
Any ideas of what sources I could search?

Many thanks!

MINKOWITZ and SLAVIN families #belarus

Laura Wine Paster <newleaf55@...>

I'm a new member, looking for information about
my family. My grandmother, Rukha MINKOWITZ, was
born in Glebokie, though the family called it
Gluboka. Her father was one of at least 7
brothers and the only one who did not come to the
US. Through JewishGen I have made contact with
cousins I hadn't previously known, but I would
welcome more information.

When I got a copy of my grandmother's death
certificate (she died in 1950), I found out that
my great-grandmother's maiden name was Sylvia
SLAVIN. I remember cousins named SLAVIN, and I
remember the family story that a MINKOWITZ
brother and sister had married a SLAVIN brother
and sister. I believe my SLAVIN relatives were
from Polotsk.
Several members of these families first settled
in upstate New York, in the Potsdam area. Several
lived for some time in the small town of
Carthage, NY. My mother and her brother were born
upstate but moved to Brooklyn in early childhood.

If you have any connection to any of this
information, please let me know!

HENSON in Manchester #general

Dear Genners,

Asking for help to find living relatives of my mother
Ilse HENSON, maiden name BERLOWITZ, b. 1917 in Eydtkuhnen, East Prussia,
her husband Alfred HENSON (former name HIRSCHBAUM) and daughter
Ruth HENSON, b. 1943 in Manchester.
Her parents Siegbert BERLOWITZ (b.1885 in Eydtkunen) and Julia BERLOWITZ
(maiden name EHRENWERT b. 1889 in Tilsit) were still Eydtkuhnen residents
in May 1939 according to Census Data and are listed as holocaust victims.
Their daughter Ilse BERLOWITZ is not on this list suggesting that at this
time she already left Eydtkuhnen for a safer place like Manchester in
England.
Any information about this family will be highly appreciated.

Translation from Russian/Ukrainian - 11 names on 1892 Tax List in Snitkov #ukraine

Michelle Frager <lulu_brooks@...>

Dear List,

I have posted a copy of one original 1892 tax sheet, in two parts, on
Viewmate as follows:

http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview Image no. 2927
Contains all the headings and six names with property values and
income, I think.
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview Image no. 2928
Contains the remaining five names and their info.

Included are my attempts at translating. Can you transliterate,
translate, or correct the names and the column headings? Also, do you
know what time period would be involved, as the incomes appear to me
to be be less than one ruble, which even for the Pale seems
miniscule.

Finally, do you know why, in what I think is the real property
column, there are often two numbers, one above the other? Is this
actually covering two comparative periods?

Thank you all for any help. I will post the fully transliterated
names back to the SIGs in case someone's ancestor is on it.
