JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
N. Main Jewish Cemetery / Providence Jewish Cemetery - Scranton, PA - any info?
#general
Howie Axelrod <highwind1@...>
I have a relative who were apparently moved >from the N. Main Jewish
Cemetery in Scranton, PA (now called Providence Cemetery or Providence Rd. Jewish Cemetery), to the Dalton Cemetery in Dalton, PA. She was the wife of a Rabbi, and Orthodox Jews who, I am to understand, will not allow a buried body to be moved (except to Israel). The special circumstances surrounding this, is that there was apparently a road widening project that required bodies to be moved. This is not substantiated information, but rememberences of a few old timers in the area. The death certificates for this person clearly indicates an original burial in the N. Main Jewish Cemetery / Providence Jewish Cemetery , and yet the grave was found in the Dalton. I have certified the acuracy of this. I am wondering if anyone has any information regarding this road widening project, or any Idea as to the approximate date of it. Any other information as to how the body may have been moved would be appreciated. Additionally, I am open to suggestions as to what agency might have the records of this project, and possibly the names of those moved. If I can get an approximate date, I might be able to dig through the newspaper films >from that period for more information. The state of PA will not provide any info on reinternments under law. I am trying to solve a mystery here and all clues are appreciated. Also, would I be able to get any information via the Freedom of Information act?

Missing Castle garden manifest, maybe not?
#general
robert roudman <rcroudman@...>
My first cousin twice removed Gerson (George) Millner, and his family, wife
Reive, son Israel, and daughter Lea, arrived Castle Garden New York on June 7, 1887. I found the exact record on the free Castle Garden site, this site does yet provide manifests. When I went to a popular premium Castle Garden site that does show the original manifests, I could not locate the manifest for "America" for June 7, 1887. I was able to find the "America" manifest for June 10, 1887 as the ship docked in Barbados. I assumed the ship had left New York and sailed for Barbados. How would I go about obtaining a copy of the Castle Garden manifest. Thank you, Bob Roudman San Rafael, CA MILLNER, MALTZMAN, RUDMAN, CHALIK, KRUTANSKY, KAPLAN

Dear Barbara,
Thanks much for the follow-up. There has been quite a lot of discussion on this topic, but it sems that we are still in the dark. Please let me know if you do get a definitive (or even a "reasonable") answer >from the census folks. I seem to be the most recent person who has been looking for an answer, and I appreciate all the work that has been put into the query by so many of the genners. I am looking for a way to contact George Chauncey WEISMAN born around 1913.
He is about 91 years old, & lives somewhere in New York. His parents were Eva & Chaim WEISMAN born in Nova Ushitsa, Ukraine & after emigration, they lived in Niagara Falls. His grandmother was Chansa WEISMAN nee POGRANICH, born around 1850. I would venture a guess that his parents Eva & Chaim were born about 1880. There is no phone listing for him. LANDA family and R' Chaim of Volozhin
#rabbinic
ben-ari <yrcdi@...>
I fielded this question several times but I'll try again:
I am researching a possible connection to R' Chaim of Volozhin. The clues I have are as follows: According to a scribbled note, not very reliable, written by a family member my gggrandmother, Sarah Hinde (nee SCHATZ daughter of Yosef - the name SCHATZ may only be his profession and not his actual family name) KANTOR, was a descendant of R' Chaim through a LANDA grandchild. According to the book "Etz Chaim" by M. Zinovitz (1972) R' Yitzaleh, the son of R' Chaim had a daughter Raichel, who married R' Shmuel LANDA. This couple died at a young age leaving a daughter, who married Chaim Hillel FRIED, father of, among others, the well known BEN-SASSON family and another son. Our problem with this is that another daughter is not mentioned and we know of no connection to the FRIED/BEN-SASSON family (who we know well). Of course it's possible that the LANDA couple had other children not mentioned in the book. Two other clues are: According to a family rumour, R' Mordechai Gimple YAFFE, who was a student in Volozhin and possibly a distant relative of the Volozhin family, and Rabbi of Yehud in Israel, told my gguncle that he (my uncle) was a descendant of R' Chaim. It is noted in another family source that this ancestry was brought up in the house of R' Mordechai of Ruzanoi (R'Mordechai YAFFE ?) We also have a family tradition that R' Yitzaleh was the "shushvin" (accompying the bride down the aisle) at my gggrandmother's wedding (due to the premature death of her parents?). All the above seem to strengthen the theory of our connection with R' Chaim of Volozhin but I would be happy to hear >from other sources who could corraborate this theory. The reason that I mentioned above regarding the reliability of the original note was that it mentioned also a possible connection with the Gaon of Vilna and after some research it seems that this link was put to rest. Thank you for any suggestions on other books which you know contain details on the Volozhin family or personal knowledge of the family. Shavua tov and Shana tova to one and all. Something should be done to preserve what remains from
the OLD Jewish cementery in BERETTYOUJFALU and MONOSTORPALYI (HUNGARY,Hajdu-Bihar county) Till now nobody had succeeded to explain me how could be possible that grave-stones were taken and carried away in a truck in 1992!!! Please check the photos in Peter Winter's site: JEWISH CEMENTERIES IN HUNGARY: http://www.geocities.com/winter_peter_4/ I suppose the tombs remain underground... Among the people buried in the cementery we have the famous Tzadik Benjamin RAPAPORT Komader mentioned in SHEM HAGEDOLIM and HACHME HUNGARIA: he died in Berettyoujfalu in 1863. I also visited the Jewish Cementery of MONOSTORPALYI: I saw BONES there: the person who showed me the place thought at the beginning that it was a dog's bone but looking at it closer, concluded that it was rather an human's bone... I hope this information will be read also by the HERITAGE FOUNDATION FOR THE PRESERVATION OF JEWISH CEMENTERIES !!!
