Re: Seeking Information about Jewish community in Bunffyhunyod, Huedin #hungary

Regarding Bánffyhunyad (now Huedin, Romania), I was at the synagogue in Cluj several years ago, and enquired about the Huedin Jewish records (as there were none at the Cluj archive). One of the men there told me that all the Jewish records of Huedin were destroyed, as well as the stones in the Jewish cemetery. I did not go there myself, so I cannot confirm.

So the only possibility for records would be civil (not Jewish) records for the period 1895-1906, which are available at the Cluj archive.

Stuart, you may want to sign up for the mailing list of www.genteam.at
(austria@list.genteam.at). There's quite a number of experts there who
also can offer a lot of help with Jewish Geneology. What they need
however, is precise information, like birth dates, names etc. to start
of with. I found my jewish family link, thanks to this list. You have

Dear Friends,

On June 2, we will be honoring Karen Franklin, Gary Mokotoff, and
Lance Ackerfeld, for their leadership and dedication to JewishGen.

After working with each of these individuals for years, it gives
me great pleasure to see that they will get just a small measure
of the recognition they deserve.

Please join me in honoring them and participate in JewishGen's
Spring Brunch, which be held in New York on June 2. We will
also publish a tribute journal, and I invite you to place an ad.

You can register for the brunch and/or place an ad by calling

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Hi Eli,
I looked up NACHATOVICH in Beider's book on Jewish Surnames in the Russian
Empire, without success but changing the C to a K yielded "NAKHATOVICH SM
See NOKHUM" (sm = secondary surname derived >from a masculine given name).
The name NOKHUM is common in Courland, Shavli, Belostok and Petersburg
according to Beider, who also mentions that the German spelling uses a C
instead of the K. Nachman is derived >from Menachem (and means comfort).
Also you need to be aware that the "ovich" end is Russian for "son of ".
