JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
(US) NTIS Reinstates Limited Access Death Master File (LADMF) Subscriber Certification Form
#general
Jan Meisels Allen
Previously announced to the readers of this digest, the Office of
Management and Budget (OMB) had required a cessation of applications for certification for the Death Master File (DMF) access effective September 30, 2014. IAJGS was informed today by the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) - a branch of the US Department of Commerce - that the Limited Access Death Master File (LADMF) Subscriber Certification Form, OMB Control Number 0692-0013, has been reinstated effective 12/17/2014. (For full discussion on this issue see IAJGS Records Access alerts: November 5, 2014 September 30, 2014 and September 18, 2014*). If you are already certified by the NTIS you do not need to recertify now. If you are interested in applying for certification the form is available for download at https://dmf.ntis.gov/ along with instructions for filling out the form and the Subscriber Agreement or Licensee Agreement. Those who are not certified and wish to receive the LADMF through the NTIS Temporary Certification Program for Access to the Death Master File under the Interim Final Rule (15 CFR Part 1110; 79 Fed. Reg. 16668, 3/26/2014), may now apply for certification to receive it. To do so you must pay the $200 certification fee and fully fill out, sign and submit the Limited Access DMF Certification Form. You will also be required to sign and submit a Subscriber Agreement or Licensee Agreement. If the instructions for filling out the form and choosing the appropriate agreement don't fully answer your questions, you may also call the NTIS Customer Contact Center at 1-800-553-6847. The $200 certification fee does not provide access to the restricted DMF. It is only for certification. There is another fee for accessing the actual restricted Death Master File. For those considering certification in order to access the restricted Death Master File I strongly encourage you to read the article by Dee Dee King (see below), the first forensic genealogist to be certified. Not only is the access to the information very costly, the restricted database no longer provides many of the data elements we were used to in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) - the commercial version of the DMF - nor does it have a search engine that the genealogical firms used that facilitated the search. Dee Dee's article : http://tinyurl.com/kr9g48z Original url: http://www.forensicgenealogists.org/wp-content/uploads/CAFG_Vol_4_Issue_3_DMF-Special.pdf IAJGS replied to the proposed OMB Paperwork Reduction Act about these issues and the November 5 IAJGS Records Access Alert includes the NTIS response. The genealogical community under the Records Preservation and Access Committee (RPAC) of which IAJGS is a sponsoring member, is following this and plans to address in it 2015. *If you want full details of the postings please go to the Records Access Alert and access the archives- http://lists.iajgs.org/mailman/private/records-access-alerts/ You must be a registered subscriber to access the archives. To register go to: http://lists.iajgs.org/mailman/listinfo/records-access-alerts and follow the instructions to enter your email address, full name and which JGS/JHS/SIG/JewishGen is your affiliation You will receive an email response that you have to reply to or the subscription will not be finalized. 1875 Zinkov (Ukraine) Conscription Census
#general
Linda Shefler
Wow!!! I just received the completed spreadsheet of the 1875 Zinkov
Conscription Census >from Dena, and it's amazing! There are 8678 individuals included in this census; not including father's names! The information included is: Page Number, Registration Number, Surname, Given Name, Father, Relationship to Head of Household, Sex, Age, Age at Last Revision, Reason Left (place of origin), Comments, Former Registration Number, Day/Month/Year of Census, Town/Uyzed/Gubernia, Type of Record and Reference Information. Some of the places included are: Berdichev Butsnevtsy Derazhnya Mikhalpol Olgopol uyezd Snitovka Colony Staro-Zakrevskiy Maydan Village Sutkovtsy, Sutkovetskaya volost Colony Bzovo, Domsko-Karichinetskaya volost Village Ignatovtsy, Ignatovetskaya volost Village Yaroslavka, Volosovetskaya volost Village Redvintsy, Volosovetskaya volost Village Molomolintsy, Volosovetskaya volost Village Volosovtsy, Volosovetskaya volost Village Parkhamovtsy, Bakhmatovetskaya volost Village Pankovtsy, Volosovetskaya volost Village Shrubkov, Volosovetskaya volost Village Suslovtsy, Suslovetskaya volost Village Popovtsy, Suslovetskaya volost Village Kudynka, Suslovetskaya volost Village Svichna, Suslovetskaya volost Village Rozhny, Suslovetskaya volost Village Shchedrova, Suslovetskaya volost Village Goloskov, Medzhibozhskaya volost Village Murovana Verbka, Sutkovetskaya volost 6th Uchastok Volkovintsy Voytovetskaya volost Yankovetskaya volost Yaskovetskaya volost Zinkov As you can see, this census covers a wide area and can be very helpful to anyone searching any places in Letichev uyzed. I will be sending the spreadsheet out today to everyone who donated $100 or more to this project. Unfortunately, we are still far short of what we need to collect to compensate Dena for her amazing work. As you know, it takes a long time for JewishGen to upload records like this, so if you are interested in getting the records immediately, please make a contribution of $100 or more to the 1875 Zinkov Conscription Census through JewishGen. Remember, it is *tax deductible*. And it's also Chanukah, so how about a nice Chanukah gift to JewishGen! Let's get this funded, so you can get a copy of these records immediately, and we can get it in line to be uploaded (which can take months >from when it's fully funded). Please make sure to let me know when you make a contribution, the amount and include a copy of your receipt >from JewishGen. Chanukah Sameach! Linda Silverman Shefler San Francisco East Bay

to be found at the Lithuanian Archives. Over the last several years, I have developed an extensive collection of Russian language resources. In this collection, I've got a set of some 100 books listing the names, locations, infractions and date for those imprisoned in the Russian Empire. The collection is incomplete, but I do have the records for 1901. For this particular year, an index is also provided. A search of the alphabetical index for 1901 yielded the following listing on p. 39: BERKON, Abram-Leyba Kasrielev #25915 An index also exists for the 1900 conviction records and in this index there are the following listings under the surname BERKON: BERKON, Itsek-Berka-Berel Kasrielev (6 r) #565 BERKON, Motel Kasr. Bucovina Vital Records Database
#romania
Bruce Reisch
Dear Friends,
Following the recently announced addition of data to the Bukovina Vital Records Database, one of our volunteers noticed that searches were not producing a complete set of results. Only birth records were being returned, and marriage/death records were excluded. Thanks to the database managers of JewishGen, this problem has now been rectified, and surname searches are returning with a complete set of results, now including marriage and death records. I would suggest that Bucovina area researchers re-run their surname searches at this time. Thank you, Bruce Reisch

(Ukraine) IHRA Project to Study Killing Sites In Krements Region of Western Ukraine
#ukraine
Jan Meisels Allen
The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) initiated a project
to study Holocaust-era killing sites in the Kremenets region of western Ukraine. They are scanning the area while they still have survivors who can tell them where to search. IHRA's report ruled out conducting archeological digs in killing sites as it violates Jewish law. Nazis had thousands of killing sites in the Ukraine. This is but one of them-that is part of a larger project funded by the German government. The team is led by Meylakh Sheyket, director for the Union of Councils for Jews in the Former Soviet Union which is using geophysical imaging to delineate the area where in 1942 Nazis buried thousands of Jews who they had murdered. To read more on this see: http://tinyurl.com/log75tw Original url: http://forward.com/articles/211177/holocaust-researchers-use-imaging-to-find -mass-gra/ IHRA is an intergovernmental body whose purpose is to place political and social leaders' support behind the need for Holocaust education, remembrance and research both nationally and internationally. To learn more about IHRA see: https://www.holocaustremembrance.com/about-us In full disclosure I was an invited speaker on access to holocaust records this June to an IHRA committee. Wow!!! I just received the completed spreadsheet of the 1875 Zinkov

Let's get this funded, so you can get a copy of these records immediately, and we can get it in line to be uploaded (which can take months >from when it's fully funded). Please make sure to let me know when you make a contribution, the amount and include a copy of your receipt >from JewishGen. Chanukah Sameach! Ukraine SIG #Ukraine 1875 Zinkov (Ukraine) Conscription Census

Linda Shefler
Wow!!! I just received the completed spreadsheet of the 1875 Zinkov
Conscription Census >from Dena, and it's amazing! There are 8678 individuals included in this census; not including fathers' names! Hi Marilynn,

Try writing to the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People (at the National Library of Israel, Hebrew University, Jerusalem). Ask if they have or can obtain Kupel records. Yochai Ben-Ghedalia is the Director (archives@...). If they do have records, then write to Janette Silverman, Ukraine SIG's Coordinator and ask her to include Kupel in the next request for documents that she sends to the Central Archives. Also, check Miriam Weiner's website (rtrfoundation.org). She lists birth records in Khmelnitsky Archives and Census records in Zhitomir Archives (as well as Census records that were in the Kamenets Podolskiy Archives before the fire there). You then can write to the Archives to get pricing for the records you need. Finally, for a long shot, check the searchable (and downloadable) Kremenets Concordance (Master Name Index) at http://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/Kremenets/web-pages/master-surnames.html This is an index to all of the documents/records translated by our Kremenets group. It currently has almost 180,000 entries, including 157 entries for people who were registered in Kupel. Do a town name search for "Kupel". Best wishes, and Happy Chanuka, Ron Ron Doctor (rddpdx@...)
