My late aunt Bessie was once mentioned in a census as Betsy. However, her
birth registration doc. >from Riga gives her name as Pescha.

I understand that Petsie is a yiddish form - or nickname - for Pescha and
so I suppose that is how she became Betsy and then Bessie.

Dear Jill,
I have found Beilah or variants to be a common form of Elizabeth in

I just joined this group. I have been a member of the Early American SIG
for a few months. I have been doing genealogy research for about 2 years and
consider myself at the intermediate level in German Jewish Genealogy research.

I live in San Francisco, California, USA.

My native language is English, and I also know French and German.
I consider myself advanced in using a computer and I have intermediate
Internet experience.

I have identified the names, birth and death dates of 8 great grandparents
and at least the names of 13 great great grandparents.

My primary research goals are now to find the ancestral locations and
families for the 6 great grandparents who immigrated to the US, mostly in the
1840-1850s.

Family names and towns/areas I am researching are:
LEWY - Six brothers born in Ostrow near Poznan, Poland (then Prussia) who
show up in the 1860 US Census in Montgomery, Alabama. Four brothers to Chicago,
IL by 1890.
KAHNWEILER - Louis, born in Gruenstadt, Germany in 1841, found in
Tuscaloosa, Alabama by 1861. Related distantly to Henri Daniel KAHNWEILER of Paris,
Picasso's art dealer, but exact relationship not known.
LOEWENTHAL - Berthold (and 5 siblings and father) born in Butzow, Germany in
1846, emigrated via Hamburg in 1866 to Chicago, IL.
LOEWY/SMITH - Born in 1839 in Europe, original name Karl LOEWY, changed to
Charles SMITH on arrival in US, lived in Baltimore, MD, 3 siblings in US with
LOEWY surname.
HAHN - Alexander, born in 1816, near Hamburg, living in Marengo County,
Alabama by 1850.

with the unveiling of a memorial to those deported.

"Zabasearch" is what is called a meta-search engine. It uses existing search engines and
databases to build its own results of a given search.

As a technical person, I see it as very poorly conceived. For example, the Google searches
it does should embrace the given and family names between quotes ("") to allow pertinent
results. Instead it does a generic search with all given names and family names included
in the original search. The result is that all "Moshes" in the world, who by any chance have
mentioned a "Schwarz" on any given web page, are also shown. For the same reason, the
image search results are mostly irrelevant.

As several previous members wrote, do not give much credit to this site. The only good
thing it does is to deliver several addresses for the same person or family.

"Krasch" is most probably Krasnik, spell. [krah shnik], nearby larger town
located 16 miles distance >from Annapol.

Both towns (located in Imperial Russia Lublin Guberniya) had a large Jewish
population. Availabe on line JRI-P five marriage records for Annopol show
close family relations between those two towns. A curious is the detail that
all five grooms were >from Krasnik and all five Yiddishe maiden were >from
Annopol.

BTW, both towns were located on the on the Russian - Galicia (Austria)
border which are close to the researched by you shtetls of Rozwadow and
Tarnobrzeg (about 20 miles distance >from Krasnik).
