What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?

How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?

I have been searching for some time for my grandfather's three sisters and
have just found out that his niece, Bertha Gop(p) arrived through Ellis Island May 30, 1917. The shipping manifest states that she was going to her Aunt, Gutel Meyerowitz of 35 Wall Street, Boston, Mass. This is the first time that I have "found" one of his three sisters, although I believe that all three went to Boston. The 6 brothers went to South Africa and it was only through the ALD that I discovered that there were also 3 sisters. Their parents (my great grandparents) were Shmuel Beniamin ben Abram Gop and Sora Rokhel bat Abram David Friedland. I have had some research done in Vilnuis with amazing success! Gutel Gop was born in Vilijampole, Kaunas on 29th December 1873. She may also have had a son Borukh, who was born in Kaunas in 1896, before her marriage to Mr ? Meyerowitz. I know nothing further about Gutel's family in Boston, or even when she left Lithuania. I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction, perhaps has access to a Boston census 1910 or 1920? Thanks in advance Illona Hope Perth, Western Australia. My grandfather was the president of a Drohobycz
Landsmanschaften burial society in New York and I know that they only issued burial permits for the person to be buried in the plot. They did not provide any information about parent's names or anything else for the stone. I handled this for the society when he became ill, so I know how it worked for them and other societies. Father's name and the person's Hebrew name information is given to the stone maker by the person who orders and pays for the stone, usually the next of kin. Since the death certificate is prepared immediately after the person's death, their close relative might be upset and not remember the person's father's name. After weeks or months they go to the stonemaker to prepare the stone and they have a clear mind or they had the opportunity to look up the information or ask someone else in the family. I know when I gave the information to the stone maker for my grandparents they did not ask me for proof of the names and accepted what I said. All they did is made sure it was a correct Hebrew name and they spelled it in Hebrew and gave me a diagram of how it would look before they carved it. I have no other information, other than the fact that he was a member of this society and is buried in the society plot in Deans, NJ. Attempts to seek out any remaining members of the society have been to no avail. I know he came to this country in the early 1900's and, I think, he served in the Navy. All attempts to obtain information >from the navy, or anywhere else have led me nowhere. Since I have no other living relatives, this is my last resort. Any help would be greatly appreciated. A new discussion forum about the Yiddish Theater has been introduced by Dr. Leonard Prager in Vol. 6, No. 8 of the Mendele Review. You can access that issue of the Mendele Review and other past issues by logging on to http://www2.trincoll.edu/~mendele/tmrarc.htm As moderator of our YT&V group, I informed the Mendele Review of our existence and the role I think that each group plays in understanding the history of the Yiddish stage and those who participated in it. The early Yiddish theater was certainly an expression of the culture of a people spreading out >from Eastern Europe in the late 1800's, and an exchange of views about this medium would be of great value. While we are searching for family and friends involved in writing, acting, operating theaters, composing music and working backstage to make the production a success, the Mendele Review concentrates more on the culture that produced the environment and its use of the Yiddish language. I'm trying to find out where records for Kyllburg are kept. Is there a library in Kyllburg or a nearby city that might house old directories for businesses during the mid to late 1800's-early 1900's? In particular, I'm trying to find out when a company called "I. Quirin", a photographer or photography studio, was in business in Kyllburg. I have an old photo of a man I believe to be my great-great-grandfather but until I can determine the approximate time period, I can't be sure. "I. Quirin, Kyllburg" was stamped on the photo. An Israeli web site for missing relatives and friends

There is a new Israeli web site, designed to help people find relatives and friends they are no longer in touch with. The site enables people to write few lines, add pictures etc. Unfortunately the site is in Hebrew, but I assume you can always ask someone who has a Hebrew keyboard to enter the data for you. As mentioned earlier, it is a new site, and as of 10/10, there were only 49 requests. lived near Kovno and were exterminated by the Germans in June, 1941 (my grandfather's words). My question is, to what concentration camp would they have been deported?" The moderator makes a good suggestion in that you should check everything available pertaining to the Kaunas ghetto. However, if they lived NEAR Kovno and if they were killed in June, 1941, there is a greater chance that they were killed by locals and not by the Germans. In that case, there would not be a record of those killed. Continue your search though, you may get lucky and find something. Howard Margol Atlanta, Georgia
