Horowitz genealogy back to Spain #rabbinic

E. Randol Schoenberg

Can anyone point me to the source for the genealogy of the founder
of the Horowitz dynasty Yeshaya Halevi Horowitz (1465 Horovice -
1517 Prague) back to Pinhas Halevi Benbenisti (b. 1235) in Barcelona?
Everywhere I look you find this tree and the source is "tradition,"
but where is the first mention of this path? http://geni.com/4rM0c
I am not at all familiar with this area, but am curious if there are
any real sources for this legend (about which I am skeptical). On the
other hand, my own path to Horowitz (my 15g-grandfather) is relatively
well-documented. http://geni.com/1S5LN

Descendancy from R' Chaim of Volozhin #rabbinic

Yonatan Ben-Ari

Recently I was told, again that I am a descendant of R'Chaim of
Volozhin but that the exact link is not definite. What is know is
that my maternal grandmother's maternal grandmother, Sarah Hinde
SHAT"Z married R'Shlomo KANTOR . they lived in Pinsk/Karlin during
the mid 19th century. It was through Sarah Hinde who we presume was a
grandaughter of R' Itzaleh , son of R' Chaim. Family lore has it
that SarahHinde's parents died before she was married and R' Itzaleh
escorted her to her chupa .

There is a hint that her parents were a daughter of R' Itzaleh who was
married to R' Shmuel LANDAU who also gave shiurim at the Yeshiva and
both having died during her father's lifetime. Problem is that Sarah
Hinde doesn't appear in any of the published trees of the family that
I've seen.

If anyone has personal knowledge of the above I would be happy to hear.

Thank you

Yoni Ben-Ari, Jerusalem

Moshe of Kletzk-18th cent #rabbinic

Looking for list of children of R' Moshe of Kletzk, father of Rabbi
David , who was the Rav (Rabbi) of Novarodok between 1794-1837.

I received information >from this group that Rabbi David went under the
family name of TZEMERINSKY but I don't have any idea if his father,
Moshe, had a family name.

TIA

Danzig Database added to JewishGen Germany and Poland Databases #danzig #gdansk #germany #poland

Logan J. Kleinwaks

I am very pleased to announce that a new database of Jewish
genealogical records >from Danzig/Gdansk has been added to both the
JewishGen Germany and Poland Databases. For details of the current
contents and special ways to search, please read the introduction at
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/germany/danzig.htm . Many more
records will be added to the Danzig Database in the future based on
the work of the JewishGen Danzig/Gdansk SIG; some are nearly ready to
be added pending additional proofreading.

Briefly, the Danzig Database currently contains 17th-20th century data
including: births >from Danzig 1931-1939, Altschottland 1838-1846,
Mattenbuden 1832-1846, Weinberg 1839-1847; marriages >from Mattenbuden
1832-1846, Weinberg 1837-1847; deaths >from Mattenbuden 1832-1846;
memorbuch >from Breitgasse 1821-1878; membership lists >from Mattenbuden
1832 or 1833, Weinberg 1817-1881; businessmen >from Danzig 1687-1763;
inscriptions on communal and personal objects >from Danzig,
Altschottland, Mattenbuden, and Weinberg 1697-1935; name index from
Erwin Lichtenstein's "Die Juden der Freien Stadt Danzig unter der
Herrschaft des Nationalsozialismus."

Some of this information was already on our SIG website and has been
added to the database so everything can be searched in one place.
Some entries in the database refer to additional information on the
website.

Among the records due to be added next are births >from Danzig
1905-1931 and late 18th/early 19th century censuses.

Separate >from the Danzig Database, researchers might also be
interested in a chart summarizing the online and offline locations of
Jewish vital records >from Danzig, by type and year, at
http://www.jewishgen.org/danzig/records-chart.php . For non-vital
records (e.g., surname adoption list) and other relevant resources,
see also: http://www.jewishgen.org/danzig/resources.php .

The Danzig Database exists because of the cooperation of the Central
Archives for the History of the Jewish People, the Family History
Library, the Jewish Museum, and the Leo Baeck Institute (Jerusalem);
the volunteer efforts of Barbara Algaze, Tamar Amit, Angelika Boening,
Logan Kleinwaks, Zeeva Levy, and Roni Pelled; the support of Barbara
Algaze, Ralph Chayen, Mark Kalisch, Logan Kleinwaks, Gerard Salomon,
Senta Simon, and Rose Losch Speiser; and the dedication of the current
and former JewishGen team, including Warren Blatt, Joyce Field, Susan
E. King, Michael Tobias, and Avraham Groll.

Thanks to all, happy searching, and stay tuned for more announcements soon,

Logan Kleinwaks
Coordinator, JewishGen Danzig/Gdansk SIG
