Re: JewishGen.org Discussion Group - Digest #1

Eva Lawrence

I was able to change the size of the messages in the Digest by right-clicking and choosing Zoom. The Digest became much easier to read. Also, my Digest arrives with blue base and header - perhaps the green one isn't due to Jewishgen, but to your email programme..

I found I had to come up with a new password to access my mailing list subscriptions but your old password should still work on the main website. Mine still does. It’s a shame we now have to have two.

Re: Replying individually to someone who has posted a message

Sue Frank

I have now opted to receive individual messengers/threads as I find that easier than the daily digest. Even though this generates more emails, I can create a filter to put Jewishgen emails in their own folder. On the individual emails it’s easy to reply to the person who sent it rather than to the group by going to the sender’s name at the top of the email. This links to their email address. I don’t know if this also works in the digest as I have now changed the way I receive messages.

Bruce,

This is how the email you sent appeared.   Note the sender’s name (Bruce Drake).  All I had to do was click on your name to see your address. I then copied it and put it in the  To: space of the email.

I'm sure the answer to this is staring me right in the face, but on the old listserv, when someone posted a message you could see his/her email address is you wanted to send a reply that might not be of interest to the whole group. But I'm not seeing it on this new platform. Where do I look or how do I do it?

Platform and Android

Tammy

Hello,
I like the new platform but have a few questions, mostly related to using it on an Android phone. I'm not sure if it relates to the settings of the digest or to my phone settings, so if anyone can please enlighten me, I'd appreciate it.

1) The digest headings are hyperlinks to the actual discussion topic. I like the idea but can't seem to get the links to work on my Android. (I've enabled links). If this is a browser problem, how can I fix it?
2) The digest font is small. How do I make it larger and fit what I'm reading into the screen?
3) This question is related to the above two. When I click, "Load more" on my Android, the digest changes size and is no longer user friendly within the confines of the Android screen. I need to scroll back and forth in order to read the screen. How do I remedy that?

If these are not browser problems, but rather problems with the format of the digest, I'd appreciate someone providing a remedy to these issues.

I want to thank all the people who are embarking on modernizing our Jewish genealogical community by updating the Jewishgen.org website and the digests. Most of you are volunteers and I appreciate all that you are doing!

Thank you,
Tammy Weingarten

I have a Belarusian branch with the name Zelensky. The Ukrainian President is Jewish. Is the name  Zelensky a common name? Are all spellings the same name? Could we be related? I can not go back very far. The oldest  is Movsha born 1817. Opinion please.

I cannot find my list of SIG membership lists from the new main page of Jewishgen.
As I wrote in another thread, the page at <https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main> ("JewishGen.org: The Global Home for Jewish Genealogy" is only for the online presence of the JewishGen main discussion group.

The "regular" JewishGen.org site, where you can manage your SIG discussion groups, hasn't changed.

To find the list of your SIG discussion groups, log on to JewishGen.org as usual, click "Search," then "My Profile," then under "Mailing Lists: You are currently subscribed to X JewishGen Mailing Lists," click "View/Edit."

This Zlotnick married my great grandmothers nephew. I don’t know anything about her family though.

Also: Is there a Lithuania SIG?  I didn’t see one in your list.

The Litvak SIG has a discussion group accessible from JewishGen's home page.

Bruce- I too have a ZLOTNICK interest. A relative of mine (exact connection is under evaluation but a DNA match is involved) is the grandson of Myra ZLOTNICK and Mark LEAS, of Capetown S Africa. Myra and her sisters (Ruby, Rhoda, Doris, Iris, Alma, Lucille, Zena) were daughters of Hymie ZLOTNICK and Anna KUWTER (~1882-1940). Although Hymie and Anna lived in Capetown, I suspect a Lithuanian ancestry.

Hymie had a brother who came to USA ~1904 and changed his name to SILVERMAN. No other information available.

Does any of this sound familiar?- Jerry

If by Jgen you mean this page <https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main>, that is only for the JewishGen.org Discussion Group.

(The green title "JewishGen.org: The Global Home for Jewish Genealogy" is misleading -- the "regular" JewishGen.org site remains where it has always been and can be accessed as usual.)

So, you don't have to change your password for the regular site but you do have to create a new password if you want to log on to the discussion group online.

To do that, click the green "Log in if you are already a member" button near the bottom of the page, then on the resulting page click "Forgot your password, or don't have one yet?".

Enter your email address and click "Email me a link to log in," and when you get the link, click it to log in and create a password for the discussion group site.

Note that your regular JewishGen.org account will remain unchanged.

Hoping to find more information about my grandfather, Max Rothstein (Smela)His father and grandfather, Shlomo and Nachum (Rotshteyn), his uncle Shimon, Shimon's children Isaak, Shlomo, Max, Rosa and Riva. Also from Cherkassy, my great-grandmother Chaya Kosminsky, her parents Pincus and Bessie (obviously Anglicized), my great-uncle Nissen (Nathan) Kosminsky, my great-aunt  Chave Kosminsky, Nissen's wife Gittel Cherkasy and her parents, Jonah and Tolia Tovorovsky. As you can see, I have extensive family from both Smela and Cherkassy, but I think my grandfather Max must have had siblings and I'm trying to find them and their descendants. I remember an aunt, Tante Perel, but have no information about her, other than she was from his side of the family. I could never connect them as siblings.

Thanks,
Judi Rothstein Zimmer
