JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
Replying to messages and besieged with digests
Janette Silverman
It would probably cut down the number of meaningless (to most
subscribers) messages if people would start responding directly to a person rather than the digest when the message is personal. A lot of the conversations that are part of this new "plan" are really meaningless to most readers. It is of course really difficult to respond to a person when all that shows up is a person's name, no email address and there is not an option that is easy to see which allows for responding directly to a person rather than the group. Also having messages with no discernible name of the author doesn't help if you wanted to know who the person submitting the message is. Keeping the discourse polite should also still be observed, which I have noticed over the last several days is not always the case. Janette Silverman

Major changes for JewishGen Email discussion list
#germany
John Paul Lowens <jplowens@...>
If this is the first GerSIG message you have seen in the past week,
part of the reason for that may be this: Jewishgen has started to make big changes in its Email discussion group lists. The JGDG - JewishGen Discussion Group is the first to be changed to a new system. If you don't read your JGDG Email regularly you may not recognize it. There are major changes in its format and operation. JGDG Digests now have the subject: "[JewishGen.org] JewishGen.org Discussion Group - Digest #___" More information can be found at the JewishGen website. Also, in the more than daily JewishGen Digests. User problems and suggestions on how to solve these problems are included in almost every single edition of the new JGDG. Reportedly, JewishGen's leader plans to move SIG lists like GerSIG's to the new format. Hopefully, most of the many reported problems will be resolved before we become a beneficiary of JewishGen's latest improvement. John Lowens, Suburban NYC

Re: Comments about format change
Karen Gwynn
I am not an active member of this site, but I do read through my emails looking for topics of interest (surnames and locations). I find the new format easy to use on my computer while online. I have not tried using while offline, so I cannot address any of the issues I've heard others mention. I like being able to quickly jump to a topic and then get back to the table of contents.
I hope it all settles out soon.

I am not getting my SIG messages either. What do you have to do to receive them?
Moderator note: There was no change at all with the SIG groups. Only the JewishGen Discussion Group was upgraded at this time. When a message is posted in your particular SIG group, you will still receive it

Re: PLEASE READ: Multiple Digest Issues
I suspect that once the focus of messages in this discussion group turns back to genealogy and away from the new format, the digests will likely dwindle to one a day. Before the change, there were rarely more than 12 posts in a daily digest.

Re: Multiple digests

Dear all -
I too found the multiple daily digests very annoying, and switched to "daily summary", which I find very comfortable. I really like the interactive interface in the new format, which allows one to easily see all messages in a thread, as well as all the other new bells and whistles. That having been said, I would like to point out that this is indeed a change that might take some getting used to, by us the users. Also - using the daily summary makes it that much more important to use a meaningful subject line. Thanks for your good work. Jane Vogel-Kohai Mesilat Tziyon, Israel

Re: JewishGen.org Discussion Group - Digest #1
Eva Lawrence
I was able to change the size of the messages in the Digest by right-clicking and choosing Zoom. The Digest became much easier to read. Also, my Digest arrives with blue base and header - perhaps the green one isn't due to Jewishgen, but to your email programme..

I found I had to come up with a new password to access my mailing list subscriptions but your old password should still work on the main website. Mine still does. It’s a shame we now have to have two.

Re: Replying individually to someone who has posted a message
Sue Frank
I have now opted to receive individual messengers/threads as I find that easier than the daily digest. Even though this generates more emails, I can create a filter to put Jewishgen emails in their own folder. On the individual emails it’s easy to reply to the person who sent it rather than to the group by going to the sender’s name at the top of the email. This links to their email address. I don’t know if this also works in the digest as I have now changed the way I receive messages.
