Subject: Re: [JewishGen.org] websites and aids

I had technical aids who helped me set up these  4 websites and add material to them. Now 2  of these aids are not able to help me. I need help to add the material to the websites. I do not have a way of doing so by myself. I have no way to get into these websites  to add the material. I contacted Suzanna a few times; but am still waiting for some help.. What should I do?

Messages have gone out to the Hungarian discussion list. I can't speak to the others but agree with others who have commented that messages don't go out if none have been received and moderated!  Also, may have been delays due to High Holidays.

Is it possible to get a weekly report?  I find a daily e-mail to be too frequent.

Re: SIG emails

Jeffrey Herrmann

The moderator says we have gotten no SIG emails because none have been sent. To try to verify this, I went to “search messages previously posted to the mailing lists” and clicked on the tab “JewishGen SIG Lists Message Archives.”  All I got was an error code.  So, I can’t even satisfy myself that I am missing nothing. As you say, “a coincidence”?
Even to  generate this reply, I had to request a special link to log on, because the JewishGen website doesn’t recognize my pass word when I try to send a message.

I agree with you Steven Katz. This has not been useful. I would rethink this, because alot of us are at the age where it is harder to comprehend.

The new format is not an improvement. It is too complicated to be useful. The ultimate objective of users is to do genealogical research, and the digest should be merely a tool to facilitate research. Users should not have to spend their time grappling with and navigating around its many idiosyncrasies. One example: like others, I was receiving each day a frankly ridiculous number of emails containing messages posted to the digest, until I figured out how to opt to receive only the daily summary. But now, in order to read posts listed on the daily summary, I have to click on a posts's heading, which takes me to a different page, and then, after I've read the post, I have to navigate back to the daily digest to see what other posts I might be interest, and then repeat the process. This is definitely far too cumbersome to be useful.

Genners,

I am a long time genner and am presently visually overwhelmed by the new format and the number of daily mailings.  Still unable to switch to one daily digest.  Shalom, Malka from Texas

I’m receiving individual emails now. Look at the attached screen shot. Towards the bottom of the email there is a link to “Your subscription”. Following that link will take you to a web page where you will have to create a new password to access your subscription choices. One is for receiving individual emails. I hope this helps.

I don’t want that either.  I much prefer just receiving individual messages from the Discussion Group which allows me to delete or read or follow a thread that interests me.

23andMe Loses Appeal Court Unpatentability for Identifying Relatives Against Ancestry #dna

Jan Meisels Allen

23AndMe sued Ancestry in a federal court in 2018 for infringement on its patents that describes a method of analyzing “identical by descent” regions of the genome and determining the degree to which two people in their database are related. In August 2108 that court found that the claim was “patent-ineligible” because they do not relate to any “inventive, unconventional technique’ related to their discovery or application.  Last week, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit affirmed the lower court ruling, finding against 23andMe who had appealed the lower court’s decision. The August 2018 ruling by U.S. District Judge Edward Chen in San Francisco, that was upheld invalidated 23andMe’s patent because it was directed to a “law of nature” that cannot be patented.

Regarding jewsfrombukovina@... email

I would like to be able to see the thread, otherwise, if, I only read my emails, say, after a few days it will become very confusing.

Otherwise, the fact that I dont have to send my mail as plain text, and that I can add photos or other information, is great!

Daily summary; margins; format

malka_f1

I'm a long standing Jewish Genner.  It's a wonderful research tool and I have learnt a great deal from reading all the messages over the years.

Following helpful advice on here, i changed to the daily summary (or whatever nomenclature is now used) and i see 2 sections: the first being the subject header and the second being the messages.  As other Genners have pointed out, this is not user friendly, it is counter intuitive.  I felt dismayed.  Clearly this needs a rethink.

Margins: pre the new format, the daily digest arrived, i opened it on my laptop and voila i could see all the messages neatly displayed on my screen.  Now, for some reason, I can't see from the beginning to the end of each line without moving my space bar back and forth.  This is user unfriendly.  However, on checking the new format on my kindle and phone, there isn't a problem with the display.  So whilst you have improved the display for other devices, for those of us who prefer to use a PC/laptop, there is now an issue.  Can this margins issue please be investigated and resolved for laptop users.

Format: The previous format was simpler, easy to navigate.  I'm not an IT person, but neither am I a dinosaur, so whilst I understand the need for some change eg the use of different alphabets, the old format should have been retained whilst bringing on board the new innovations.  'why fix what ain't broke'?

The words 'baby and bath water' come to mind.

Clearly there needs to be a major rethink on a number of aspects of the new format.

Still seeking immigration information Kaminsky

elkamins@...

Greetings, all:
I'm thrilled to finally be able to post again. The old system wouldn't allow me to. Anyway, I am still seeing immigration information on my great grandparents.
Samuel and Jennie Kaminsky. I have found them in the 1900 Philadelphia census under the spelling Kominsky, with three of their children, Isie (Isadore), Pauline and Yetta (Helen). I keep searching for ship's records and immigration information but keep hitting a dead end. My goal is to find out where in "Russia" they came from. I have no real clues except the stories from an uncle that they lived near Kiev.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: Question to Judith Diamond

Lynn Diamond

To Barbara and Moderator:

If I could have figured out how to respond only to Judith, I would have. I still do not see how to do that. There is no email address link on her name, and even here I suppose I am responding to everyone in the group rather than one or two people. I am mystified as to why some posters have live email links in the "From" field and others do not.
