JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

I think you might mean Elkton, Maryland. It is in Cecil County and they might have the records or they might be in the state archives. This is the link for the Maryland State Archives:

Many thanks to Jonathan Michael Wien and Mike Vayser for their translations of the back of a photo of a 1927 nursing school class. Using the information they gave me, I have been able to find the name of the Warsaw nursing school and its website in Poland. The website says that there are no original documents remaining from the school. But since I now know that I have a photograph of the 1927 nursing school class, I can send it to them
Could not have done it without ViewMate! Nancy S Maryland USA

Re: Date of Birth input into databases

Hi all, This is an excellent idea and I was going to ask same question ages ago, but was expected that the answer will be that to add or change anything will require new software & it will be very costly. Thank you.

who are or where is Bialostoker
#poland
David Syner
I found an article about my Grandfather, Lester Syner, in Detroit Jewish News archives. that important announcements of forthcoming activities will be made next week. There are 300 members in this organization. Membership is still open to young men who desire a wide variety of interests. among them. athletics, forensics, anti-defamation, literary work, social and youth promotion groups. An important event is planned for April 3.1938 If my Grandfather was President of Bialostoker. Maybe it would help me identify which county/city they lived in before coming to the US.

Re: New site/app for searching graves in Israel
#israel
Odeda Zlotnick
First: many many thanks to David - I have just found a gravestone (and date of death) that I have been looking for for a long time!
Second: the site does have an Englisih interface -- upper left hand corner of the Hebrew, site, or the following link: https://gravez.me/en/. However the site doesn't translated or transcribe names, so, you have to know the Hebrew spelling of the name you're searching for. Once you've got the name - you get all the information (except for the name) in English. And the spelling has to be exact - the search engine does not work like a google search. So, when you ask for help in transcribing, make sure to ask for alternative spellings. And if it's common name - the more details you have, the better. Odeda

Seeking descendants of Lodz industrialist Markus SILBERSTEIN (1833-1899)
Alan Glixman
Dear group
I am trying to identify and then get in touch with the descendants of the well known Lodz industrialist Markus SILBERSTEIN (1833-1899). Would anyone in the group be able to please recommend any resources or approaches?
I have contacted a JewishGen researcher via the Family Tree of Jewish People (FTJP) and done some internet searching but have not been able to identify any contemporary pathway to connect with anyone – I’ve only been able to find historical information.
The parents of Markus were Joachim SILBERSTEIN/ZYLBERSZTEJN and Adela GLIKSMAN. Their siblings also married - Ruchla ZYLBERSZTEJN (the sister of Joachim) married Dawid GLIKSMAN (the brother of Adela). I am a descendant of that other marriage and so the four grandparents of Markus SILBERSTEIN are also my direct ancestors.
As Markus SILBERSTEIN and his wife Teresa COHN were a wealthy well-known family, and as there seems to be information and photos of them and their children which are find-able on the internet, I am (optimistically) hoping that there are some descendants living who may be in possession of family archives in which there may be some photos of the parents or even grandparents of Markus and maybe even some other family photos that include his aunt (my gggm) Ruchla.
Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
Kind regards
Alan Glixman

Date of Birth input into databases
nardir4@...
I am new to this group and apologise if this has already been discussed.
My grandfather left Lithuania in the 1890's and changed his name when he got to England, and would never reveal his original name. We have ,however,a date of birth for him.My question is-"Is there any way of accessing the Jewish Gen databases or any other database using the DOB as the input?".Since there cannot be a great number of births amongst the Jewish community at the time on any particular date, we may possibly be able to recognise and follow up details from other things we knew about him.Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated.

that's great, but is there any way to update the information on jewishgen? there is jowbr, and, i think, some older infofiles as well. if i were looking to visit these cemeteries, i'd be more likely to search the website than to look through the h-sig discussion group for updates.

Dear all,
Thanks to Judy Petersen, I have found a death notice for one of my great-great-great grandfathers. One of the names signed as mourners is Orzsike (the O has Umlaut). What name this could refer to? It is obviously a nickname. Could it be Erzsebet? Thank you very much, Amit Naor Israel
