LA Help Needed #general

GRAMAW

Dear Genners: I am trying to make a contact with the family of my mother's
cousins. They were Rose COOPER, and her sisters Ida WILNER and Sara
MOGILNER. Their father was my great uncle, Samuel WINER. They lived in LA in the
1940's and beyond. The 1930 census lists them as residents of St. Paul, MN.
The last contact my uncle was about 12 years ago. I am afraid that they are no
longer living, and haven't the faintest idea of their children's names.

Any help would be *greatly* appreciated.

Dear Genners,

I would like to thank everyone who responded to my query about
Washington Cemetery. The advice I received was to telephone
them, which I did. They were most helpful.

Also, the correct mailing address is 5400 Bay Parkway, Brooklyn,
NY 11230-3346. (As someone said, so much for the USPS website
information!)

Thank you again. This is a most helpful group who is generous
with their knowledge.

What I want to say is that the name Ezekiel has also given the surname
KASKEL. One of the more famous persons with that name was Michael KASKEL
in Dresden, late 1600s, a banker, founder of Bankhaus Kaskel, which later
became the Dresdner Bank, still in existence, I believe. The same
Dresdener Bank recently came into the news for the fact that during WW2
they had financed operations connected with the deportation of Jews.
The Dresdner Bank's website says that the Bank Michael Kaskel was
established in 1771 >from which it was formed in 1872.

Do you have a Napoleon 1812 story?

Roots-Key, the journal of Jewish Genealogical Society Los Angeles, is
collecting information about Napoleon's Russian Campaign of 1812. We
hope to be able to plot the route >from Kovno to Moscow with your stories.

Napoleon's army covered a broad front that stretched north and south
through Kovno, Vilna, Svensionys, Vitebsk, Mogilev and Minsk, bordered
by the Pripet Marshes on the south, and crossing the Nieman, the Dneiper,
and the Berezino Rivers. Major battles were in Smolensk, Borisov and
Borodino. Every village and villager was affected. Construction,
demolition, pillage, disease and death threatened every shtetl and town
in his path.

If you have a story, no matter how insignificant or obscure it sounds,
we would like to hear it. If you would like to participate in this JGSLA

Dear JewishGenners,

Whether your ancestors came >from Poland or you are just interested in the
history of the Polish intellectuals of the 20th century, the new book
"Caviar and Ashes" by Dr. Marci Shore is sure to be a fascinating read.
Recently published by Yale University Press, the book can now be purchased
at a discounted price through the JewishGenMall.

Dr. Shore's "Caviar and Ashes" eloquently presents the history of a
generation of Polish intelligentsia born at the turn of the last
century. The book follows the lives of young innovators who chose the
Marxist philosophy even before Poland fell under the control of the Soviet
Union. Their selected path took them >from literary cafes not only to
corridors of power but also to prison cells. The work, based on the newly
obtainable archives >from Poland, the ex-USSR and Israel, recounts over
fifty years of Eastern-European Jewish literati history in the twentieth
century.

That is Russian. In Russian cyrillic, i's always look like backwards N.
Ukrainian has these characters, but also an "i" formed like ours, and
another "i" with two dots. Belarussian doesn't have the i with two dots,
but adds Y (U) with an accent mark, which neither Russian nor Ukrainian
have.

Odessa may still be more Russian than Ukrainian despite its location.

I hired a researcher in Romania, and one of the records he found was
the burial of what would appear to be my great grandmother. He told
me she is buried in Rulikovski Cemetery. I have never heard that
name mentioned in any posts. Can anyone give me any information on
