Re: Reb' Yisrael of Ostraha #general

My mistake, I meant that Perl married Aharon of Lechowitz.

Thanks to all who corrected me.

Devorah: I'll soon send you a more detailed reply.

Yoni Ben-Ari, Efrat

In one of Reb' Aharon Hausman's book (something like Yalkut Divrei Aharon)
when writing about Reb' Asher "Hazaken" of Stolin, he mentions that his
daughter Perl who married Reb' Mordechai , Admo"r of Lechovitz, had two
sons and a daughter. The daughter, Miriam, was married to Yosef the son of
Reb' Yisrael of Ostraha.

Does anyone have any information as to details of this Yisrael biography.
I am a seventh generation descendant of his (not >from the above Yosef).

reply to Mathilde Tagger re please translate #sephardic

robert benjamin <bobredpen51@...>

Ms. Tagger,
One thing the word "gazda" means is "landlady" in Romanian.

The online translation dictionary at http://www.wikiled.com/Default.aspx
also shows many other definitions for "gazda":
Croatian: boss, housefather, housekeeper, landlord, owner, proprietor.
Slovak: reeve (local official or chief magistrate).

I could not find any definitions in the cited translation dictionary
for "rustuli", "rusutuli", or "rustemuli". The word "rustemul" in
Romanian I believe means "the Russian"; it is also the name of a popular
Romanian dance. I don't speak any of these Eastern European languages.
Maybe somebody who does can guess which letters are missing in "Rusu..li",
and what it might mean.

Best of luck,
Bob Benjamin

Yanofsky in Kalinovka #ukraine

Dave Weil <dweil@...>

I would like to determine best approach to search for records in Ukraine for
my grandparents. Any suggestions?

My grandparents: Louis (Lieb) Yanofsky (probably Janofsky) arrived US 1907.
Manifest says born in Kalinovka. Wife Rebecca (Riva) and 2 children arrived
1909. Manifest says she was born in Strzasow (best readable decipher).
Manifest says son born in Kalinovka, and daughter born in Strzasow.
Naturlization declarations for son and daughter say they were born in
Podolsk. Birth certificate for another daughter of Louis and Rebecca gave
Riva's maiden name as Stelbach. There also are confusing dates of birth (but
a range) for Louis and Rebecca based on manifest, census data, and death
certificates. On manifest, Louis indicated that he was visiting
brother-in-law, Avrum,Kalichman in CT. Leie Kalichman >from Kalinovka
arrived in 1906. (We question if she is the sister of Louis; but the
families of today do not know each other.)

Thanks,

2 names in mothersurn #poland

Hello.

Could someone please tell me what it means when there are 2 names
separated by a "/" in the Mothersurn field of the JRI-PL index?

I thought there was a recent thread about this, but I couldn't find
anything in the archives (perhaps it was too recent).

Thank you.

Conversion and name change #germany

I am interested in finding out if one of my ancestors converted to
Catholicism in the 1800s or early 1900s while still living in what
was Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland). Can anyone recommend
how I might beging this research or find books or articles about this
topic in general?

Thanks in advance, Cathy Gruber Oakton, Virginia <cag3@cox.net>

I'm guessing that at some point your great grandmother's family was in
Lithuania, since I understand that Boyarski (no matter the spelling) was
the most common surname among Lithuanian Jews at the time she lived.

My family left Germany for Lithuania, it appears your ggm's family did the
opposite and left Lithuania for Germany, if the surname is as much of a clue
as I suppose.

Puzzling words - translation from Yiddish help needed #general

Sue Clamp <clamp@...>

We have recently discovered an old letter written in Yiddish, which
appears to have been written by a sister of my grandmother, who we
previously didn't know existed! Unfortunately she doesn't appear to have
signed the letter. We have managed to translate most of the letter but
there are a few words that are a bit beyond us. I've put the snippets
from the letter that need translating on this page:
http://www.clamp.dsl.pipex.com/page.htm

I would very much appreciate some help. Please reply privately.

Thank you.
