Thanks for Assistance with Orechovno Research #belarus

wstein@...

Dear SIG members,

I really want express my deep appreciation for all of your help in my
pursuit of the location of Orechovno, my grandfather's birth place according
to US forms he filled out.

I believe I have found what I was looking for in the Ushach district, in
Vitebsk Oblast. I was able to track locations with the help of a web page
GeoGREIF http://greif.uni-greifswald.de/geogreif/ , which contains
historical maps available at the Institut Geographie und Geologieder
Universit Greifswald. Among these are maps produced during the early
20th century by the Soviet government and some earlier. Although they are in
Cyrillic, they contain map materials at a very detailed scale for much of
Belarus and elsewhere in the old Soviet Union.

http://greif.uni-greifswald.de/geogreif/?cat=3D24&view

I made significant use of the map material and the suggestions and help
offered by Belarus SIG members and found one Orechovo location within a
short distance of a town listed in the 1895 census with many people with my
grandfather's last name, Disman.

Again, many thanks for all the people who offered helpful suggestions in
this quest.

Sincerely,

Marty Weinstein

Latvian Newspaper - short translation request #latvia

Hi Eric and Latvia SIGers

That website looks to be a fantastic resource, I searched on one of my ancestral surnames and found two short articles with mentions of relatives of mine in, I think they are both death notices but if anyone can tell me in a bit more detail what they say I would be really grateful.

The link by the way can be shortened to: http://www.periodika.lv/ <http://www.periodika.lv/Default/Skins/LatviaArch/Client.asp?Skin=LatviaArch&enter=true&AW> the link for the english search page is in the top right corner.

Many thanks as always

Re: death date of Katharina Schneider Mautner #austria-czech

I want to thank all of the people who helped me find the death date of
Katharina MAUTNER.
The research skills and generosity of subscribers to this SIG are
incredible! Many people tried to read the tombstone. Others gave me
invaluable information and leads that yielded the information and
other interesting material. Special thanks to Wolf-Erich Eckstein and
Traude Triebel.

Apparently none of the Katharina Mautners in the public listing of the
Wiener Zentralfriedhof graves is the right one. My gg aunt is buried
in that cemetery with her son, Heinrich, who died there in 1927. This
information is available on the non-public database.

I concur in wishing Celia Male a speedy recovery, so that she can
continue to educate us with her scholarship and pedagogy.

It was great to receive Celia Male's latest message. The wishes for Celia's
recovery are currently the main subject on Austria-Czech. As so many of our

Nurith and I send dear Celia our best wishes and pray for her early return
to her fruitful computer.

Oh my goodness..this is shocking. I hope you will convey to Celia and her
family the support of so many she has supported through the years. She has
been an incredible blessing to those of us seeking to find/connect with family.
Please let her know of my love and concern.

I too am deeply saddened by Randy's news of Celia's stroke. That a person of
such energy, generosity and knowledge could be laid low in such a way is a
horrible irony.
Celia has helped me by showing me how to do as well as by doing for me, both
here and in Vienna, and I am humbled and proud to have shared a little
heritage with and learned >from such a kind and expert human being.

Randy, if you are able to collect all our names and pass them on
collectively to Celia's husband, please include mine.
