Re: death date of Katharina Schneider Mautner #austria-czech

I want to thank all of the people who helped me find the death date of
Katharina MAUTNER.
The research skills and generosity of subscribers to this SIG are
incredible! Many people tried to read the tombstone. Others gave me
invaluable information and leads that yielded the information and
other interesting material. Special thanks to Wolf-Erich Eckstein and
Traude Triebel.

Apparently none of the Katharina Mautners in the public listing of the
Wiener Zentralfriedhof graves is the right one. My gg aunt is buried
in that cemetery with her son, Heinrich, who died there in 1927. This
information is available on the non-public database.

I concur in wishing Celia Male a speedy recovery, so that she can
continue to educate us with her scholarship and pedagogy.

I too am deeply saddened by Randy's news of Celia's stroke. That a person of
such energy, generosity and knowledge could be laid low in such a way is a
horrible irony.
Celia has helped me by showing me how to do as well as by doing for me, both
here and in Vienna, and I am humbled and proud to have shared a little
heritage with and learned >from such a kind and expert human being.

Randy, if you are able to collect all our names and pass them on
collectively to Celia's husband, please include mine.

Book Search: The Jews in the old synagogue in Pinczow #general

Dave Lichtenstein

Dear All

Under the Mormon (Church of the Latter Day Saints) records in JewishGen,
I found reference to the following book of interest: "Zydzi I synagoga Stara w
Pincaowie = The Jews in the old synagogue in Pinczow"; Authors: Dziubinski,
Andrzej and Znojek, Jerzy; ISBN/ISSN 8391435830; published by Muzeum
Regiolne w Pinczowie in 2002.

I contacted the museum in Pinczow and was advised by them that they only
had their own reference book. I have searched ABE Books and Amazon.com but
without success. Would any one be able to assist me either to obtain
the book directly or via Inter-Library loan.

With many thanks in advance

Obtaining Polish records- conditions placed by the authorities #general

Joseph Hirschfield

It sounds to me that possibly the village officials of this town are
fearful that descendents of Jewish residents of the town will come back with law
suits to try to regain farms, houses, businesses, etc. of those who have
died, once they have obtained documents that show the previous ownership,
addresses, and heritage of their ancestors.

I've been promised that they will try to find any documents they have, but
they cannot be used for inheritance purposes." Has anybody else come
across such restrictions? What does it mean? Does one have to sign one's
life away etc.

Marrying Cousins #general

Allan Karan

Anyone have a theory other than mine on the following. I originally
wrote below that Abraham (aka Simon, Sam and Zavel) changed his name to
avoid the draft. I now have his death cert. and his daughter's death cert.
Sam's death cert., shows his father as Louis EPSTEIN and his mother's
maiden name is Annie GORODETSKY. His daughter Dora EPSTEIN Tillis death
certificate shows her father's name as Simon Epstein and her mother's
maiden name as Ethel Epstein.

Could it be Sam married a cousin and told people to cover it up, that
his name was first Gorodetsky and then took Ethel's name. Both Pauline
(another daughter) and Isaac (his son) used different names for their
parents on their marriage certificates. Isaac had Abraham EPSTEIN and
his mother's maiden as Ethel Feinstein and Pauline had Abraham EPSTEIN
and mother's maiden name as Ester Atkins. To me, it looks like they
purposely did not want the show that their mother had the same surname
as their father.

Researching:
KARAN, CHORON, KHARAKH and KNIGER (Kopyl; Grozovo; Chepeli; Slutsk,
Belarus),PERSKY (Poltava, Ukraine); EPSTEIN (Kobrin, Belarus)

Allan S. Karan

snip...
Ethel EPSTEIN married Abraham GORODETSKY about 1865 in Russia and
immigrated to the US about 1898. It appears that Abraham took Ethel's
surname EPTSTEIN for his when they married.
