BARON HIRSCH Cemetery, Ohab Shalom - names on entrance gate posts #general

Curiousyl@...

Joel Rattner was kind enough to visit my great-grandfather's
grave-site, in the Baron Hirsch Cemetery, Staten Island , N.Y.
Joel photographed the site and the entrance gate to the Ohab
Shalom Congregation of Greenville, New Jersey - Orthodox area.
This gracious man also said Kaddish at the grave-site.

I am posting the names inscribed on the two posts bearing the marble arch
flanking the iron gates, hoping someone will see a familiar name
- as I did!

Mogilev #belarus

dardasht@...

Welcome to all our Belarus "cousins."

As some of you might know, I have been researching Mogilev city, Gorki
(near to Mogilev), Zavarezh'ye and Vorotinschtina (a village and its
closest agricultural colony established 1830 about 18 km south southwest
from Mogilev proper). Lupalov (the southern end of Mogilev city), also
figures in our searches, as well as Chaussy and Bobruisk. On the road
from Bobruisk to Mogilev is also a small bump called Yasin, which also
figures.

Sorry I missed the formation of the SIG in Los Angeles. I was planning to
come but a family emergency kept me away. Thanks to David and others for
taking the initiative.

The names and places I am researching include the following (there are
even more appearing daily!):

TALALAY, TALALAI: Mogilev, Zaverezh'ye, Vorotinshtina, Bobruisk, Minsk,
Baranovichi, Gomel, Moscow, St. Petersburg. In Mogilev >from about 1790 to
present. Also, Novosibirsk, Siberia, as well as Israel and America (new
immigrants). David-goroduk also features in search.

In America: TOLLIN, TALLIN, TOLL, TALL, TAYLOR (New Jersey, Missouri,
Pennsylvania, Boston and Springfield in Massachusetts, Detroit).

MIRLS, MERLIN, MITTLEMAN, BERLIN, JASSEN, YASIN, KONVISER, KONWISER,
BERLIN, KORE, STAROSELSKY, SHULMAN, MURAVCHIK. Mogilev and surrounds.

YASIN/JASSEN >from Chaussy near Mogilev.

BRUSTERMAN: Gomel

VISOTSKY/WISOTZKY: Bobruisk, descendents of Yehuda HaCohen VISOTSKY.

TALALAI - rabbinical, descendents of Rabbi Leib ben Michael TALALAI--my
ggggf. Talmudic scholar and rabbi of Bet Din in Mogilev, as were several
of his sons.

KONVISER: Mogilev mohelim.

BERLIN: Rabbinical family in Mogilev and other Belarus areas.

Good luck to all. Thank you, David Fox.

I have just joined the Belarus SIG discussion group and am happy to be a

would very much appreciate getting all of the posts prior to "RUBIN,

Orsha records #belarus

Hi,

Thanks for starting this SIG.

My ggf (Max BARSILA) and ggm (Ida BASOK) were married in Orsha on July
24, 1894 (according to the bc's of all of their children), and I am
trying to locate a copy of the marriage records. Does anyone know where
I need to write, or if such records are even extant?

I'm also hoping to track down information regarding my ggm's parents,
Jacob and Esther BASOK, who were (according to family legend) wealthy
landowners in the area at the time. Any suggestions?

TIA,

Dear SIG:

Many of us are having problems with our subscriptions due to the migration of
the LitvakSIG list to lyris. Please be patient. Susan King is working on it
as fast as she can. Carol Coplin Baker is getting ready to train her
moderation team - Judy Baston and Jackye Sullins - and David and I are
hoping that all will be well by the weekend.

Hang in there!

Use a grease crayon and paper in the same way as one would when making a
brass rubbing. Then photograph the paper. You may even discover details
which might otherwise not be revealed in a photograph.

Some years ago there was a thread on s.g.j on the same subject and there
were suggestions of highlighting the engraving with graphite or shaving soap.
Both these methods were criticised by chemists as being injurious to
gravestones.
