Where would vital records for Orsha (or other towns in the area) be
kept? I know my ggp married in Orsha on July 24, 1894, but I have no
idea where to write for records.

Any suggestions welcome!

The AVRUTIN Family of Mogilev #belarus

John Tasgal <john@...>

Hello,

I am researching the AVRUTIN Family, who came originally >from Mogilev.
Some Avrutins emigrated to England, then to US, in 1900-20.
Others went to St Petersburg and Odessa.
There are currently Avrutins in Petersburg and Moscow, as well as UK and
the Continent, and in North America.

Also >from Mogilev, who emigrated to England, were cousins called REES
and BACRAC.

I have a home page for my extended family at

Re: Tombstone inscription #general

the inscription you inquired about- "ha'isha ha'chashuva" literally translates
to - the important woman. at times it stands for 'the exhalted one'.

Kishinev 1903 Pogrom - List of Victims #general

Alan Greenberg <ALAN@...>

An almost complete list of the victims of the Kishinev 1903 Easter
Pogrom (Local Julian Calendar: 6-7 April; Western Gregorian
Calendar: 19-20 April) has now been posted and linked to the
Kishinev ShtetLinks page. The address is:

http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetLinks/kishinev/PogromVictims1903.htm

The list is a merger of several published imcomplete lists, but it
does identify about 46 of the 49 Jews who died during or as a result
of the pogrom.

Thanks to Warren Blatt, who generously (and quickly) added this link
the the now ownerless Kishinev ShtetLinks.

Re: Yiddish words #general

MBernet@...

In a message warshall@tiac.net seeks translations
for various Yiddish terms in a Memorial book.

I'll try a few:

1. a broken-down wagon is described as "tsushedikt"
==parallel with German verscha"digt = demaged, >from Schade, damage.
Alternative yiddish forms include Oysvershedik, perhaps a more emphatic word.

2. a collapsed horse is described as "gepeygert"
==dead. >from Hebrew "Peger" a body/corpse not killed by ritual slaughter.

Some of the other words are probably of local Slavic provenance, or may be
regional words.

Searching for Peter and William NEUFELD #general

Ruffin R Cooper <rrcooper@...>

I am trying to locate my first cousins Peter and William NEUFELD.
Their father was Sydney NEUFELD who was at one time a diamond
cutter in New York City. He last owned a furniture manufacturing
business. His grandparents came >from Budapest Hungary and were
named William (Vilmos) NEUFELD and Fanni (STERN) NEUFELD.
Sydney's siblings include, his brother Harry and his sisters
Anna, Leah and my mother Ruth (Regina). Sydney and his wife Anita
last lived on Sutton Place (if my memory is correct) in New York
City. I believe that Peter NEUFELD is a professional. I hope that
they or anyone that may know of them will contact me. I have
family pictures and information to share with them.

Thank You
