Translation help -- Frankfurt death certificate 1967- What does "Im Pruefling 21-25" mean? #germany

Deborah Blinder

I have received a registered copy of the death certificate of my
great-uncle Georg Eduard BLOCH, who died in Frankfurt am Main on 29
Jan 1967. It's typewritten, legible and fairly straightforward, and
I've been able to translate most of it, but I'm stumbling over one
phrase, and I hope someone can tell me what it means. The certificate
states my great-uncle's name, occupation, religion and address, and
continues: "... ist am 29.Januar 1967 um 7 Uhr 30 Minuten in Frankfurt
a. M., Im Pruefling 21-25 verstorben." (The ue in Pruefling is
actually u-umlaut.)

What does "Im Pruefling 21-25" mean? All I can come up with is "in the
examinee 21-25," which makes no sense to me.

Thanks in advance for your help. Shana tova!

Question about Rees in NR-W #germany

Steve Jaron

Hi All!

I was wondering if anyone knew of any good sources for the town of
Rees. My fourth great grandfather's brother Seligman MENDEL (born in
the town of Elsdorf around 1791) lived there with his wife Esther
SPIER and their 8 (that I know of) children. I have been able to
trace two of these children and I think I have a bead on a third but I
would like tod out about the rest if possible. Thanks in advance,

London connection, 1939 #germany

jberlowitz <jberlowitz331@...>

Dear SIGgers,

After exhausting the resources of the generous members of the UK SIG,
I am appealing to this group. I am searching for the final
destination of my distant relative, Clara PHILIPSBORN (b. Kiel,
1890). She lived in Spain since 1930 and worked as a nurse and
translator for the Republic during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39).
After the war she visited family members (her mother's MOND family had
assisted other family members in escaping the Holocaust) and appears
in the Register of Sept. 1939, at No. 8 Lees Place, rooming with a
family that seems unrelated. She lists herself as single but the
Register refers to her nationality as "German [but] Spanish by
marriage" and giving the surname GONZALEZ. There is also a reference
to an imprisonment and to Scotland Yard. Some family members (no
longer living) attested to having received letters >from Clara from
"Peru or one of those South American countries."

Without listing more details here, I'd like to know if there are among
you any London residents who would be willing to visit Kew to see if
there are any documents that explain the many missing links. I'll be
happy to compensate expenses and can provide copies of documents
received through the Freedom of Information act.

Researching Hamburg for Moses Athias da Silveira (born c1640), migrated to Jamaica #sephardic

David Silvera

Question:
Are there lifecycle and trade records available for the period 1600-1675
in Hamburg that can be used to determine whether there is a connection
between Mosse da Silveira (contractor of Hamburg) and Moses Athias da
Silveira (merchant in Jamaica)?

Background:
I am seeking to identify the origin and migration path to Jamaica of my
6th great Grandfather, Moses Athias da Silveira.

Here is what we know:

1684: Naturalized as Moses Silvera in (British) Jamaica to be planter.

1697: His will was written in Portuguese and requested burial with his
fellow Jews. His will indicates that he was a merchant and that his wife
should collect receivables and wind up the business. The synagogue in
Spanish Town was not built until about 10 years after his death. Moses
wrote his will in Portuguese, suggesting that he had not been in Jamaica
long enough to become anglicized.

1698: Died in Jamaica, buried in Spanish Town Jewish Cemetery. Epitaph
(top missing) in Portuguese with traditional inscription "Faleseo Moses
da SILVEIRA Sua Alma Goza da Eterna Gloria Amen". There was the Hebrew
year but no Hebrew written on the partial epitaph. (Ref: Barnett &
Wright). This the earliest "Silveira" epitaph recorded in Jamaica, hence
the hypothesis that he migrated to Jamaica.

Spouse: Esther deLeon (c1655-1726)
Children: 4 sons and 4 daughters born in Jamaica after about 1675

Other Family and Related Names:
Abraham Cohen deLeon Father-in-Law
Dr. Jacob Rodrigues deLeon Doctor
Joseph daCosta Alveranga Witness to Will
Joseph Idana Witness ot Will
David daSilva Tavares Son-in-Law
Abraham Pereira D'Azevedo Son-in-Law
Isaac Abila Son-in-Law
Isaac Massias Son-in-Law
Sarah Massias Daughter-in-Law

Discussion:

Name ambiguity:
Many of the Hebrew Nation assumed aliases to conceal their identity,
so his names may in fact be aliases. (Da Silveira was and still is a
very common Portuguese and Catholic name). Atias/Athias is an Hebrew
name. If Athias da Silveira was his birth name, and not an alias, it
just possible that his grandparents family names were da SIlveira and
Athias.

When did Moses Athias da Silveira land in Jamaica? By 1674 assuming that
he married Esther de Leon in Jamaica before his first child was born in
1675.

Where did Moses Atias da Silveira live before Jamaica? While I continue
to seek out and review records >from Recife, Amsterdam and London, there
is a promising lead to Hamburg that needs to be investigated. And here
it is.

Research by Florbela Veiga Frade* points out that in 1639, Diogo de Lima's
testimony at the Inquisition in Lisbon disclosed Portuguese persons living
in Hamburg and following Jewish practices. Included in this list are two
names of interest:

In addition, Michael Studemund-Halevy has acknowledged in his article
entitled "Hamburg's Portuguese Cemetery" the strong connection between
Portuguese families in Hamburg and early settlers in places such as
Amsterdam, London, Venice, Curacao, Jamaica and Barbados.

Are there lifecycle and trade records available for the period 1600-1675
in Hamburg that can be used to determine whether there is a connection
between Mosse da Silveira (contractor) and Moses Athias da Silveira
(merchant in Jamaica)?

Lewis Michael Myers descendants #southafrica

Tony Albert <arabati@...>

Lewis Michael Myers died 25 Dec 1925 and was a boot merchant. In the
Cape Town probate records it is stated that his father was Shiloh Myers,
he was born in London, his wife Esther predeceased him (dying in London
in 1914) and his children were Charles Shiloh, Albert Morris, Louisa,
Katie and Sidney Simeon. Burials on the JOWBR are listed for Louisa
Myers (Liba B Shemuel) in 1956 and Albert Morris Myers in 1958 aged 74.
There is a marriage in London in 1881 between Lewis Myers and Esther
Aaronson.

Does anyone have any of these names in their researches?

I know of a Shiloh Myers who was the son of Michael Myers who died in
London around 1841.
