JewishGen server error being reported #galicia

Carol Skydell <skydell@...>

To Galitzianers

Folks, apparently many of you have not updated your bookmarks
for JewishGen in a very long time. It's apparent to us since
well over a year ago we retired www1.jewishgen.org and merged it
with www.jewishgen.org. We just maintained a pointer to it
should any of you were using an old bookmark.

When we got the server back on line Sunday night... we did *not*
revitalize the www1.jewishgen.org domain name.

With the Memorial Day "cleanout"...we've cleaned up <grin> and
are only restoring current material. You will *all need to
start back at the JewishGen home page* http://www.jewishgen.org
and revise your bookmarks throughout the current site.

If you are receiving server errors, first check and make sure
you are hitting www.jewishgen.org and not www1.jewishgen.org.
Only after you have verified that you are at the right address
should you notify us of any problems. We have checked and
verified 90% of the site and we know it works.

Re: New LDS Website - Need Belarus Feedback #belarus

To Carol, and others who might be interested:
Thank you for your posting, in which you referred to my LDS search. I went
back (early this morning) and looked for BASHEINS under International
Genealogical Index and Ancestral File. Mine are listed in both, but I saw no
section entitled "sealed to the church." Any suggestions about where to look
for that category? There are no microfilm numbers for my BASHEINS either,
which are listed, if they exist, with "submitter" information. Am I to assume
that the BASHEIN information was submitted by a relation who was a Church
member, and that the rest were posthumously converted to the Church of the
LDS? There is a reference to volume number, but whose volume, I am
wondering? Since I looked for any other family name that I could think of,
and found nothing at all, and then did the same for my husband, with no luck
either, I wonder what the nature of their submissions has been. I have a
suspicion that those listed in either file have converted, or have been
converted posthumously, or maybe were "identified" by a church member as
relations.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
Sincerely,

Miriam Camitta

Mass killings by Nazis in Gomel #belarus

Boris Bayevsky <borisb@...>

Dear Friends,

My maternal grandparents were killed by Nazis in Gomel (Homel), Belarus.
I have their death certificates, issued on May 7, 1944 by Gomel office of NKVD.
My grandfather, Rivin Berka Girsh MOVSHEVITCH was killed on September 29, 1941.
My grandmother Rivina-Berina Geesya BERKOVNA was killed on November 13, 1941.
The Question is: "Where to find more information on these and other mass killings of Jews in Gomel in 1941."

To Lorraine and other frustrated Litvaks - Knowing where to look, or where to write to is half the battle of obtaining records. Please, please, take a look at the FAQ's published on the Litvak SIG Web page accessed through Jewishgen.
You will find many of your answers there. As you will see, different types of records are stored in different archives. For the most part, the type of
records Lorraine is seeking are in the Kaunas archive rather than the Vilnius archives. The majority of the vital records are in the Vilnius archives and not in the Kaunas archive. And so it goes.

Record storage is not an exact science. Some records are not where we think they are or where they are supposed to be. Through Alexander Beider, I received information >from the 1913 voter registration list for Pusalotas,
Lithuania. The original is stored in Moscow. The Moscow archives contain a
wealth of records pertaining to Lithuania. All we have to do is find out what is there. Several individuals are working on that at present but it will be months before we know anything. If anyone out there has records >from a Moscow archive, lets hear about it as it may be helpful to others.
