ANNOUNCING - ViewMate - JewishGen tool #galicia

Shelley K. Pollero <rkpollero@...>

JewishGen announces a new research tool.

Advance your research with ViewMate!

Do you have a need for analysis or translations of book titles, letters
or gravestone photos? Do you have questions about old family photos,
maps or book pages? ViewMate is JewishGen's newest tool, designed to
supplement the written query, and help you to solve graphic riddles.
Here is an example of how it works. Follow along now with Jack, our
demonstrator.

Jack finds an unidentified family photo with an inscription on the back,

written in what appears to be Hebrew script.

He scans it on his home PC system, creating a graphic file.

Then he goes to the ViewMate (VM) website. Using the easy upload
feature,
he uploads his graphic file to VM. Jack soon receives an e-mail
confirmation with a file number.

He then posts a notice to the JewishGen Discussion Group (or SIG of his

choice) stating that he has uploaded a photo to VM. He requests someone

knowledgeable in Hebrew to visit the VM website, view his graphic
(File No. X) and translate it for him.

An eager reader will be quick to provide feedback. Eager reader responds

with translation. Riddle solved. Jack adds new info to his tree.

Its as easy as 1-2-3.
1- Scan on your home PC system.
2- Upload to ViewMate.
3- Request feedback.

You are invited to visit us today to make use of this newest JewishGen
tool. The site has FAQ and full instructions.

Majdan #galicia

moishe@langsam.com <moishe@...>

Hi,
I am turning to our group in the hopes of finding a resource to help in my
research.

Nechuma Malka was the daughter of R' David Spira (1804 - 1874) and
granddaughter to R' Hersh Mylech Spira (aka the Bnei Yissochur). According
to tradition, she married the Rabbi of Majdan.

Would anybody know who this Rabbi was? Is there anybody researching this
town? In the JEWISHGEN family finder there seems to be TWO towns by this
name, one in Poland and one in Ukraine. If eithr one was not part of
the Galicia, please forgive my posting this question to the group at all.

Thanks!

JewishGen proclaims November 2, 2000 as Carol Skydell Day #galicia

Shelley K. Pollero <rkpollero@...>

Dear Galicia SIG,

I apologize for the belated announcement of Carol Skydell Day on
JewishGen. I was unavoidably off-line for a few days and just got this
message, which I now pass on to you. Carol Skydell has been unbelievably

supportive of Galicia SIG and we send her our very best and most sincere
wishes for a wonderful birthday. It is hard to believe that Carol is 75!

Official Carol W. Skydell Day on JewishGen in honor of her 75th birthday

November 2, 2000

There are special moments and special people that an organization can
recognize, and today is one of those very special occasions. Can you
imagine the world of JewishGen without Carol Skydell?

This feisty red-head first presented herself to JewishGen at the
Washington Summer Seminar in 1995. She had been known to many of us
through her informative posts on JewishGen during the previous six
months.

It was here that Carol made her first big mistake in her 5 year "career"
with JewishGen. A mistake that now carries forward to anyone who
complains. <grin>

They say you can't teach an old dog a new trick... well those prophets
were wrong! We have proven over many years that no matter what your age,
and no matter what your disability and no matter how technically
challenged you are... JewishGen can find a way to get you to
volunteer... and then some... Carol is our proof! <grin>

from the Support Desk to Moderator, >from Moderator to Board Member and
Public Relations, >from Public Relations to VP of Operations... Carol has
surely been on a fast track.. all the while demonstrating to us how fast
she can still type.

Mother of three sons, two daughter-in-laws, one grandson and four or so
grand dogs, Carol continues to monitor all her duties while making cross
country treks between her east and west coast homes twice a year. All of
her files are zipped, her paperwork stuffed in baskets in her car... and
her car put on a transport... it is JewishGen flexibility and mobility
at the utmost.

JewishGen has gained immeasurably >from Carol's exuberance, her
willingness to tackle any job ... no matter what time of the day or
night it presents itself, her undying spirit for what JewishGen stands
for, and her unsurpassing loyalty and dedication to the missions and
goals of this
organization.

Please join with us today to honor Carol! There is no better way to say
thank you on this special day than to give back to JewishGen by making a
gift in her honor to JewishGen through our Honors/Thanks
JewishGen-erosity site.

<http://www.jewishgen.org/jewishgen-erosity/honors.html>

Please join us in celebrating this very special occassion with Carol.
This will be the most special gift of all. What a better way to honor an

individual who has given generously of her time through dedicated,
selfless work for the greater good of Jewish genealogy?

Your contribution to JewishGen will continue to fund our operational
budget which supports all of JewishGen's activities, projects and SIGs,
each and every month.

Happy Birthday, Carol!

I deleted the original posting on this subject.
But couldn't resist a response. I am named for a woman cousin named
Bashe or Basha. And I know the name to be that of other women as well.
Did not know that it could be a man's name as well. The things one learns
through this group!

Naming after deceased father #general

JOHN & DEE DEE ROSS <jnddross@...>

I, too, have found--after much confusion--that my g g grandfather was
named after his father who died in New Orleans in the second year of the
marriage leaving a pregnant wife. When the son was born, he was given
his father's name, Abraham. Because there were two Abrahams, it took me
a long time to figure out what happened. I could not relate the date of
his coming to the United States with the age at death of the Abraham I
was checking out in California, although they were both named Abraham
Gradwohl. Finally, a light went on in my head, and I tried to go down
another path to see if there were two people, and, if so, how they were
related. Or, was it just a coincidence that there were two people of
the same name. Abraham I, as I call him died in New Orleans, and
Abraham II showed up in the records in California. After several years
of searching, and much help >from kind Jewishgenners, my mystery got
solved. The widow, Caroline Levy Gradwohl, married a ? Jacobs, and they
came out to CA around 1850 to be with relatives of Abraham I. This all
drove me crazy for a long time, until I finally got it figured out!
