Who can tell me if Novy Sanz or Nowy Sacz (S of Krakow) and Rudnik (S of
Lublin) are near Kozova (SW of Tarnopol). My grandmother also spoke of a
big river than was near her home in Wiktorovka(?) near Kozova. I can't
seem to find these on the map of Jewish Gen. If I zoom out the small towns
don't show, and if I zoom in only the small towns show. Thanks, Carol Cohen

Re: name change #belarus

Joyce Weaver <joyweave@...>

This seems to be a common story.

My grandfather came to NY around 1900 (haven't found his arrival) and sent for my
grandmother and four children in about 1901 (haven't found theirs either). My mother told
me that he "told [her mother] what name to use." The name was FEINBERG and that is the name
that appears on his death certificate where it asks for his father's name.

I asked my mother what the original name was and she said something that sounded like
"DYEBUCK". I have found evidence that the family came >from the area of Brest-Litovsk and I
have seen the name DAJBOG on JewishGen lists for that area, so I think this may be the
name. But so far it's a dead end in terms of matching anything up.

I have wondered how people managed to obtain passports under these circumstances. Some of
the stories on this list have been very informative.

Beth Jacob Cemetery #general

Stephanie Weiner <laguna@...>

There are two cemeteries listed in New Kensington, PA -- either one may
be able to help you with your inquiry. As I did not locate a Beth Jacob
Cemetery on Funeralnet, it may be that, as with some landsmannschaftn
cemeteries, such as Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn, the orginazations'
plots are not listed separately, but only the "general" cemetery name.

Greenwood Memorial Park: 724-337-7631

Union Cemetery: 724-335-4904

Hope this helps.

Re: HIAS #general

Harriet Brown <hnbrown@...>

Jeff Malka asks below about HIAS records.

When I wrote to HIAS asking for information about my g-grandfather who
emigrated in 1904, I received my original request back with a note saying
that their records start in 1906.

Was HIAS existing and active in 1900?

If so,would there be HIAS records available about persons who went through
them either in NYC or in Philadelphia and where could one search through
them?

I found a printed list of cemetaries with religion noted at the New
York City Municipal Archives. They were available for the taking at
their literature desk. Perhaps if you contact that office, they'll send you
one: 31 Chambers Street, NYC 10007 (212)788-8580.

Re: "Looking for a town sounding like 'Severepoly' " #general

NFatouros@...

According to his message of Feb.3,2001, Joel Spector has been trying to
find a city called "Severopoly," according to his message of Feb. 2, 2001.

The prefix "Severo" in Russian means "Northern" and there are several
towns or cities with this prefix in their names, but I couldn't find a
"Severopol" or a "Severopoly" in my Columbia-Lippincott Gazetteer.

"Poly" or "Poli" is a suffix meaning "city" or "polis" in Greek. Many
Greeks traded and settled in the Black Sea area. When modern Greek chat,
they may say "Avria, tha pao stin poli" meaning "Tomorrow I'll go to the
city." So maybe, even though they weres probably not Greek-speaking, Mr.
Spector's friends or family membes used the same sort of construction or
grammatical ending when referring to Mr. Spector's ancestral town.

The area of Simferopol was named "Simferpol" after its conquest by
Russia in 1783. Before then it had been a Tatar town called Ak-Mechet and
much further back in history, it was part of the ancient Greek settlement
of Neapolis ( meaning "New City") which had a Scythian capital.

Sevastopol, on the Severnaya Bukta (Bay) was also a Tatar village founded
in the 16th century as "Aktiar," and was remamed after its annexation as
"Sevastopol" or sometimes "Sebastopol."

If I were Mr. Spector, I'd settle on Sevastopol unless some other
Jewishgenner has a better idea.
