origins of "Louis" #belarus

Dawn Glover <oldstuff@...>

Hello all, and many thanks for the great tips & info. I have a gentlemen
immigrant ancestor w/ the given name "Louis" or "Lewis." What might the
Yiddish, Russian and/or Polish origins of the US immigrant's name be? His
surname was Marcus / Markus. Thanks,
Dawn Markus Glover

Ellis Island Success and a question #belarus

Marshall Paisner <paisner@...>

I knew >from Naturalization documents that my Grandfathers brother
came to Ellis Island On the Patricia in 1905. By name search I could
not find him.

After much frustration I finally found the right spelling. He was
listed as "Powsner" instead of "Pewsner". He brought my Grandmother
and her 3 children. They listed their place of residence as "Sielaurtz".
I cannot find this on any map. Anyone have a clue of what area in
Belarus this might be??

Given Names #belarus

Dear Andy,

Although you have received information on most of the names listed, the
one name that seems to be controversial is Payshe. If it is pronounced
Peshe it would be male. That was my grandfather's name as well as my
husband's. However, if it is pronounced Pessa, it is female.

Re: Andrew Schwartz's question regarding the names
Itche and Itte. I believe these are both female and variations on the
same name. My maternal ggm was Itka.(I am named after her.) Her
gravestone bears the name Itte (AYIN-TET-TET-YUD). These are Yiddish
and I believe diminutives or variants of Esther. In English her name
was Yetta.

Yoshe is sounds to me like Yasha/Jasha which is a Russian(?)-Yiddish
nickname for Yaakov/Jacob, but it could also be related to Yehoshua
(Joshua, Biblical prophet). In either case it is male.

Re: Ellis Island Search Engine Has Great Shortcomings #belarus

Joyce Weaver <joyweave@...>

Thank you for the insight, Gary. I really wish they'd used the G-M
Soundex, but that's too much to ask when there are so many non-Jewish
names to be searched as well. BUT they could at least have used
standard Soundex!

I was finally able to get as far as a search and registration (at 3:00
pm Sunday, EDT, would you believe?) and found exactly what you say. In
fact, at one point it shut me out before I could look at a passenger
listing for a Gittla ROSENOLL, which came up when I entered ROSENOL, but
when I went back and reentered the name that came up, it found nothing.
Then I put the first origional request back in and got her again.

Lots of bugs in the system still.

To All Ellis Island record searchers - the frustration
level is reaching very high and if patience is a
virtue, then I am definitely minus one virtue.

The site is very difficult to get into, it lets you
sign in and allows you put in a name and as soon as
you hit search button - lo and behold you get please
try again later. What time is it not busy? 3am? Has
anhyone had success thus far?

Next day .... WOW!!! Lots and lots of Paikins

I did not succeed in was getting the originals.
I did get thrown off a couple of times, but I
did not have to sign in again. Just used the

family of Samuel and Taube BOYARSKY #belarus

SBSeales

I have known for some time that my grandmother Eva BOYARSKY FREEDMAN
came to the U.S. (as Reisel BOJARSKI) with her brother Ben and a woman
named Taube BOJARSKI. The year was 1898, the ship Frederich de Grosse,
Bremen-N.Y.
I have also known that another brother of my gm, Harry, worked in E.
Boston with an Isydor BOYARSKY. Isydor was naturalized in Boston, but
filed his declaration of intention in N.Y.
Tonight, on the 1900 N.Y. census Soundex film, I found the family of
Samuel and "Taub" BOYARSKY living at 15 Rutgers Place, N.Y. Their
children were Benjamin (not my gm's brother!), "Isador", Rebecca, Celia,
Rose, Annie. Isydor's birthday matches the one on the later
naturalization.
Does anyone know these people? If so, we are cousins on some level.
By the way, my gm's brother Harry eventually moved to Winthrop, MA, and
I know some of you are related to Winthrop BOYARSKYs (and POPKINs/PUPKOs).

Sheesh, I gotta get a life!
