In order to continue my research into defunct Jewish societies I petition our
readership to help me pinpoint the shtetl origins of these societies. The
shtetl seeker is not necessarily helpful in this study as many names have
undergone significant
change and locations [Vileika] duplicate within the same country. Please look
at the following and, if it is familiar, please e-mail me with your findings:
Amchenover Independent Benevolent Society

To explain how to search the French Naturalization Records is a very
difficult matter. I recently wrote a full article about this subject
published in the last issue of the American magazine Heritage Quest.

If you are searching for a Naturalization File between 1900 and 1950,
the research can be done easily thanks to a CD Rom. For the other
periods, the research is more complicated.

If you write me privatly about the naturalized persons you are searching
for, I could tell you more about this subject.

Sincerely,
Laurence Abensur-Hazan (Mrs), Paris, France

Hi Jessie Ann and all who are interested. Rootsweb has a site called
Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness. Check your City and State for
Volunteers, most will take the photos at no charge, some ask for you
to re-emburse for expenses. There is one or two people who are willing
to take photos in the Queens Area. I have asked one of the women, her
name is Linda several times to take photos and she does a beautiful
job.

The URL for Random Acts is

Jessi-Ann,

Try the URL below. They have a list of the societies and with
what cemetery they are connected. You can search by city and/or
society.

Searching: GOLDBERG and GOODSTEIN-Russia and Brooklyn, NY; PINKUS
and WINOGRAD-Odessa, Ukraine and Brooklyn, NY; GELFAND-Minsk and
Bronx, NY; YEHUDIS; KATZ, Bronx, NY

Is any one here familiar with the Naveridker Brother's Society?? I
have a relative buried in the society's plot in the Washington
Cemetery Brooklyn NY but can not find any information about the
society.

I am especially hoping to find if they had plots in other NYC
cemeteries too in the hope of finding where others in the family
were buried.

Ida & Joseph Schwarcz <idayosef@...>

Perhaps her Hebrew name was Haya or Hava which in Russia often
became Clara. In America Hava could be Evelyn.

My mother always thought that her mother's name was Miriam Clara
because relatives called her Clara. Imagine her surprise when she
found out that her name was Miriam Evelyn. We still don't know why
she was called Clara.

1880 Canada To North Dakota: Hope floats! #general

JANICE GOLDMAN <jg2333@...>

Dear Jewishgenners:
Canada to North Dakota: You may hold the golden key.
I finally began "listening," after many years of hearing a simple
explanation of my ancestor's journey to the U.S.A.
I am searching for Harris/Harry KLEIN/KLINE, a Russian born 1850
(or so) that is said to have left Russia as a "young man" to avoid
military conscription. He may have traveled to anywhere to avoid
detection and then boarded the ship that carried him to freedom.
Do you know of where I might find a listing of ships carrying
passengers >from through Canada to a North Dakota port in 1880 or
thereabouts?
Thank you very much.

You can't always trust what is written. On the Ellis Island database,
in trying to read the handwritten names, there are often huge mistakes.
My grandmother Adele, is listed as Schel , and her brother Jene as Fenc.
If you look at the original manifest, you can see the actual names,
since you know what they are, but you can understand how someone
unfamiliar with the names or the handwriting would see it otherwise.
In addition, my grandmother's accent was so heavy, that when my mother
was born here in the U.S. and gave the hospital the name Elise verbally,
it was written down as Elsie. She always called herself Alice!

Hi, I am building our Family Tree (which goes back 6 generations to
early 1800s in Yaneva, Poland) -- names: Lev and Turnansky. My
geographically dispersed family would *love* to see (and contribute to)
the development of the Tree on the web.

Does anyone know of a web site which will host Family Trees for open
*or* secure access over the Internet? (Naturally, sponsored (free)
web sites are of particular interest!)

Thank you,
Steven Elliot

MODERATOR NOTE: We encourage you to submit your family tree to the
Family Tree of the Jewish People, hosted by JewishGen. You can find
out more at http://www.jewishgen.org/gedcom/ . Suggestions for other
family tree sites should be sent privately.
