Judy Ferrara <jferrara@...>

I would appreciate assistance in identifying the place name on Viewmate;
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview.html. The file is Rich Flanger,
VM1882. It appears immediately after "vitebsk" as the point of origin on a
1913 manifest.I have tried my best to locate it on every map and list I
could find, but I'm a beginner and may have missed the obvious. I believe
that the first letter is an "L"? Please reply privately. Thank you!

The Beate Klarsfeld Foundation #general

Perhaps information on the above subject has already been
sent to JewishGenners, but it was news to me:
http://www.klarsfeld.org/cat/menu2.htm

The site lists the Foundation publications now available for
shipment, cost (in U.S. dollars), and order form. I received
it >from a most helpful new email correspondent, Ms. Alba Toscano,
president of Sinagoga La Javura in Valencia, Spain. Ms. Toscano
writes in fluent English that hers is a rather new, small
Conservative synagogue, affiliated with USCJ. Her web site
(very attractive, but completely in Spanish) is:

Milton Blackstone <milton@...>

Dear Mr. Freedman:
Sorry to have to use JewishGen to seek a personal contact
but I know Mr. Freedman is known to many "genners" he helped
who seek info about Leeds residents.

A young gent named Jason Cain, is anxious to obtain some
information regarding Leeds relatives named Blackstone.
Unfortunately, the URL I have for him has expired so if any
readers are aware of his current URL, would you kindly email
me, I would gladly forward same to Jason, after obtaining Mr.
Freedman's permission. As an old friend, I would also like to
renew our acquaintance since having orignally been introduced
to him via our mutual friend, Saul Issroff. If read by Mr.
Freedman, I hope this message reaches you in good health.

Re: WELLSTONE, was it WALLERSTEIN? #germany

Toni <tovaknit@...>

MBernet@aol.com asked:
Does anyone know the original name of the family of Sen WELLSTONE of
Minnesota, who so tragically lost his life in a plane crash?
It was Wexelstein. Both his parents were immigrants - I forgot where his
father was from, but his mother was >from the Ukraine.

Help with locations in East Prussia/Lithuania #germany

M. Faber <mfaber@...>

I just got off the phone with a relative that gave me some interesting
information but nothing I can pinpoint. I'm hoping that you all can help.

My GG Aunt was supposed to be >from Hedecruk near Leipzig in East Prussia.
She met her husband, who's family were shingledeckers, when he was looking
at trees. His family was >from Tavriz in/near Kovno, Lithuania. My GG Aunt
always claimed her mother was German.

I've been unable to determine what communities they are referring to using
Shtetl Seeker. Does anyone recognize these shtetls? Also, when my GG Aunt
and her father arrived in 1904 (at Ellis Island), they listed Akrnauschken,
Germany as their last place of residence. Does anyone recognize this
location? Thanks for any and all help in advance.

The father of Senator WELLSTONE was the Russsian Jewish immigrant Leon
WEXELSTEIN. The surname WEXELSTEIN (or the phonetically identical
WECHSELSTEIN) is of German respectively Yiddish origin. There are some
rocks in Germany with the name "Wechselstein".

It also may be that this surname has something to do with "wechseln"
(to change, especially money changing).

“This is a conundrum. How can one brother be raised Orthodox
Jew (as well as being a Kohane) and the other Roman Catholic?”

It was pretty common, I think, to ‘fudge’ an ancestor’s
religion when he/she converted. Especially during Hitler’s time,
it could be worth your life to do so-and before that there would
have been social reasons to do so.

I know a woman who has a picture of her gr grandfather wearing
a yamulka (he was bald and his head was cold all the time) and
with a typically Jewish candelabra in the background (before
electricity everyone used candles), but her parents deny the man
was Jewish.

JGFF Alert - thanks #general

Toby Brief

Just wanted to compliment and recommend the JGFF Alert. It's a
wonderful service - after becoming a part of it, I received my
first notification within a week. Very exciting and although it
didn't prove to be a new lead, it did put me back in contact
with someone whom I had been in touch with in the past. We will
continue to search for the connection that probably exists between
our families. Thanks again for the great service!

2 New ShtetLink Sites - Lipany, Slov./Dynow, Po. #general

Debbie Raff

This is to announce the birth of 2 new ShtetLink sites.

Lipany, Slovakia (formerly Hethars, Hungary)
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Lipany

Dynow, Poland
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Dynow

They are both works in progress, so if you have information
on either town, please feel free to drop me a line.

For those out there considering setting up a site for your
town of interest, take the plunge. It is amazingly simple
and there are folks willing to help.

It was only yesterday that I was thinking about it, and
today I am the 'mom' of triplets! (3 ShtetLink sites) ;-)
