Hebrew translation of tombstones--Silesia #general

Evaradding@...

I have posted on Viewmate transcriptions of inscriptions on the
tombstones of my gggrandfather and ggggrandmother >from a cemetery
in Silesia (Miejsce, Poland, formerly Staedtel, Germany).

http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=3400

http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=3401

The epitaph on the first is in the form of an acrostic in which
the lines begin with elements of the person's name--not just the
first letters. Is this common?

I am interested in literal translations, but also in a poetic
sense of them, as well as whatever other information you can share.
Thank you for your help. Please respond to me directly.

Kinnui names. #usa

Judy Landauer <plants@...>

Dear List,

I am looking for some advice on the given names of Jewish people.
Specifically, My husband's gggrandfather, Moses Landauer lists his
parents as "Hirum Landauer and Rebecca Jandorff". (Moses emigrated in
1854 >from Wurtemburg to the USA.) Could "Hirum" be the same name as
"Hayum", and Rebecca another name for "Baier"? I have read the
information on the Jewishgen site for kinnui names and came away with
more questions then answers.

I know that "Hayum" Landauer also went by "Heinrich", as any
paperwork I have found for him >from the Wurtemburg Emigration papers
lists both names whenever he and his wife, Baier Jandorff are found.

Any suggestions? (SEE BELOW)

Judy Landauer Richard & Judy Landauer Shelley Idaho Plants@srv.net

MODERATOR NOTE: My suggestion is that you post this to GerSig which you can
join in the same way (free of charge) that you joined the Early American SIG.

That group has a number of experts on these names. Also, if you can find it,
the book by Ben-Zion Kaganoff on Jewish Names is the bible in this field. MOD.

Elizabeth Jackson posted as follows:
Two documents I have >from Minden Germany, where my mother lived, indicate her
residence as follows: May-Sept. 1937, Hannover, Schellingstr.3 Dec. 26, 1937 -
Oct. 29, 1938, Hannover, Raabestr. 4 Does anyone know how I might find who was
residing at these addresses at that time? ..........

There is an explanation for " This family was taken away at the end of
October 1938". Most Polish Jews were deported >from Germany to Poland October
27/28, 1938.

Jewish - German Language Newspapers #germany

Jerry Zeisler <jzeisler@...>

from time-to-time, my great-grandfather, Rabbi Joseph Zeisler, when he
wasn't being a rabbi, noted that he was a reporter, journalist or editor.

We found listings for him in the New York City directory (1890/1891), on a
passport application (1895) and a ship's manifest in one of those roles.

Can anyone point me to a listing of the German/Jewish newspapers of the
1890s in the New York City area?

Also, it was mentioned in a 1906 Danville, PA newspaper that he was
relocating to Hartford, Connecticut as an editor. Would anyone have
information on a German/Jewish newspaper in Hartford in 1906? Thank you all!

Yesterday, I wrote:

Does anyone have the family trees of the SCHATZKES
family and this Rav Mordechai Gimpel YOFFE family, and could they
see if Pinsk or Karlin and the name KANTOR or any other details
mentioned above appear there.
I noticed in another family source that the names SCHATZ was spelled
in Hebrew with an additional "Kuf" (although in English it would be
spelled SHKATSCH). However, this gives an another strong hint of
some connection to the SCHATKES family (rather than SCHATZ).

Does anyone know of any connection between the SCHATKES family and
Pinsk &/or Karlin?

My ggguncle Chaim Dov's wife was a niece of Rabbi Y.E. SPEKTOR of
Grodno. Was there any connection between the SCHATZKES and SPEKTOR?
(besides the fact that they and/or their descendants gravitated
toward my alma mater RIETS at Yeshiva University.)

New Jersey Cemetery Problem #general

Joan Parker <housemom@...>

Here are several ways that may help.

1. Send a certified, return receipt requested letters demanding nicely the
$25 or the photos or you will take legal action.
2. Contact the BBB in the local area.
3. Contact the cemetery association if there is one
4. You might have to even contact the District Attorney's office to report
fraud.
5. If your local paper has something similar to Action Line, which helps
resolve problems as we do in the Miami Herald, contact them.

Hope this helps.

PINKUS and WINOGRAD-Brest, Litovsk maybe Odessa, Ukraine, Bronx and Brooklyn, NY;
GELFAND, YEHUDIS, KATZ-Minsk, Bronx, NY, Miami and Miami Beach, FL.

I sent a check to a firm that manages the Newark Jewish Cemeteries, in early
October, to take a photo of a gravestone. Despite numerous phone calls, I
have yet to receive the photo, though they have cashed my check-$25!

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I may resolve this?

Thank you,
