SZCZUCZYNER / SZCZECINER #general

Avraham Y. K. <435.gavea@...>

Looking for info on the family Szejdel Hendl SZCZUCZYNER z"l and her sister Malka
Dwojra SZCZUCZYNER z"l. They are likely to have been born in the 1840s generation.
The former married to Yaakov Itzchak (Jacob Icek) Kano z"l, in Wiskit. The latter
is said to have been born in Warszaw and married to Dawid Hersz HORCHSTEIN z"l,
also born in Warszaw.

I see an entry on JRI for Szejna Handel SZCZECINER, born in 1846, microfilm 730208,
from Wyszogrod, Plock Gubernia / Warszawa Province. This is very likely to be her,
I wonder if anyone can give lead me to anything else about her.

Thank you in advance,
Avraham Yehoshua Kahana,

Pigs on Jewish Farms? #hungary

Vivian Kahn

I wouldn't be so quick to assume that Jews didn't own pigs in 1828
because they sure did by the end of the century. Check out A magyar
korona orszagainak mezogazdasagi statisztikaja. : Masodik kotet. :
Gazdaczimtar / szerk. es kiadja a Magyar Kir. Kozponti Statisztikai
Hivatal, the 1897 directory of landowners and leaseholders that the
University of Pecs has scanned and included in its fabulous KlimoTheca
collection.

According to this source, the livestock on my great-grandfather Miksa
Neumann's farm in Kereszt, Ung megye, included 62 pigs (sertes).
Check out this source and you'll see that it wasn't at all unusual for
Jews to own swine. More recently I had a neighbor who was a "white
meat" farmer in Israel indicating that Jews still keep pigs.

Vivian Kahn, Oakland,CA

I just re-read, to my amusement, my posting on the 1821-28 census
record fo=
r the Jewish population of Szabolcs County where I wrote about
columns list=
ing the numbers of "chickens, pigs, etc" owned by each family.
Obviously n=
o Jews owned any pigs! My reference was based on a casual
translation I re=
ceived, and in checking a JewishGen infofile on this census I see
the follo=
wing listed:

* Col. 10: Large domestic animals, number of oxen, cows, horses
* Col. 11: Small domestic animals, number of sheep, swine, goats

Full information at: http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Hungary/Census1828=
.htm

So while the census form was not created with Jewish dietary laws in
mind I=
still felt I should clarify my statement to the group.
