The Jewish Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay will meet at the (Mormon) Family
History Center, 9000 106th Ave N., Largo, Florida on Sunday March 8, 2009 at 1:45

Ann Peterson, staff member of the Family History Center in Largo, will present An

Ellis Island visit & questions #general

Bob Kosovsky

After doing research for a number of years, I finally took the trip and actually
visited Ellis Island over the weekend. It's a fun trip. If you go, please leave
yourself a few hours to absorb all the exhibits - it's very jam-packed. (I found 2
hours was not enough - the last boat leaves for Manhattan at 5:15.)

[I posted a query here several months questioning my family story of my grandfather
being a stowaway - and after seeing the Ellis Island set up, the story becomes even
more untenable in my mind (although not totally impossible).]

One of the exhibits dealt with the island functioning as a hospital. The exhibit
case displayed a few actual birth and death certificates of people who were born
and died on the island. The exhibit stated that about 3,500 people died on Ellis
Island between 1892 and 1954. (To say the sanitary conditions appears less than
healthy is an understatement.) The exhibit said that the rate of non-admittance to
the US was approximately 1%. (If you knew what they were looking for and were in
good health, it should have been easy to pass inspection.)

I don't suppose there is a list of non-admittance people - is there? And where
would the lists of deaths/births be located? Would they be absorbed in to
Manhattan or some other borough? Thanks!

Bob Kosovsky, New York City, seeking any and all permutations/locations of:
KASOFSKI/Y, KASOVSKI/Y, KASOWSKI/Y, KOSOFSKY, KOSOVSKY, KOSOWSKY, etc.
KOSOW, KOSSOVE, etc. and other derivatives; >from Slutsk: GELFAND, DAVIDSON
Klodawa: JARET, JARETSKY, JARECKI, KOLSKY/I; Przedecz: PIFKO, PIWKO

Bobruisk (spelling?) Fundraising #belarus

Sfingold

Many thanks to all of you who contributed to the Bobruisk research
projects in 2008.

Thanks to your tax-deductible donations we have covered almost all of the expenses
for the research completed to date. We have a slight negative balance of $79.
There is much more research that can be accomplished in 2009.I'd like to encourage
all of you who are interested in Bobruisk and have not yet donated to seriously
consider donating now. We are ready and willing to continue if the support
is there.

If I misspell the town name, don't send me email about the spelling.
Instead, volunteer to take over coordinating this project!
I have no known relatives >from this town but am coordinating this project
because we have the opportunity and seems like the right thing to do.

Best wishes for successful research in 2009!

BERKOFFs of Milwaukee #general

CAROLYNR

Per the 1933 Milwaukee Wright's City Directory, page 144 BERKOFF, Harry & Rose had
a meat market at 2153 N. 10th Street. Their residence is listed as 2976 N. 49th
Street. Also listed at that home address are the following: BERKOFF, Abr (Abraham)
BERKOFF, Eva (Mortemoth Co) BERKOFF, Louis (a student)

The 1936 City Directory only lists Harry & Rose, and his occupation as a (jobber),
so perhaps they no longer has the meat market? (this was depression era)

There are several BERKOWITZ families near them on 49th Street, in both
directories. If you need list - let me know.

It appears that this family is buried at a Milwaukee Jewish Cemetery, called
Second Home. BERKOFF: Abel David/d. 7-Nov-1951/S30L7S2; Edith Cohen/b.
29-Sep-1913 Arpin, WI/d. 4-Sep-1994/S30L7S6; Harry/d. 11-Feb-1952/S30L7S3;
Louis S./b. 2-Jan-1904/d. 18-May-1971/S30L7S5; Rosabelle V./b. 4-Dec-1910/d.

This summer I will be going there to take some grave photos for another JewishGen

but the drive >from Northbrook, IL to Milwaukee is not so far-- you should take a
