JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Seeking obit for Maggie TASK; NY/Ohio
#general
bjeberman@...
Hello Fellow Genners,
I am seeking an obit for a Maggie TASK who might have passed in the late 1990's as there was a paid notice for a memorial for her on March 3, 2000. It stated the following: Task-Maggie. A Memorial Service Sunday, March 5, 2000, 3 P.M., at Ceremonial Hall, Ethical Culture Society, 2 W. 64 St., New York, NY. I'm not sure if she had passed in New York or somewhere in Ohio. As Maggie Task was born in Marion, OH. Her brother who had just passed on April 7, 2009 in San Antonio, TX. Was also wondering if she got married and had a family of her own. Please contact me privately. Regards, Judith Elaine Berman bjeberman@... Franklin, MA

Edward MISHELL family, Essex County NJ
#general
Nancy Goldberg
Edward Everett MISHELL was born 1896 in New York to Isaac & Tania-
Tatiana MISHELL, who moved to Bloomfield NJ in 1897. On the 1920 census, he was an artist, living with his parents. He married Julia KRAUSE in May 1920 at a Catholic church in Newark. Edward attended Columbia in 1921 (university catalog). On the 1930 census, he was a "counselor" (lawyer?), living in Bloomfield with his parents & daughter Ethel, born mid-1920s (no wife listed). Edward & Julia had a son, Edward Victor MISHELL, in 1933. Julia was deceased by Oct 1950 (Edward Victor SS-5). Edward remarried, to Lily SHACK, who came >from a Jewish family, between 1941 and 1950 - no known children. The NJ State Bar Assn mentioned Edward MISHELL as a member in 1923 and 1957 publications. In 1936, Edward had a coin store on Springfield Ave, Maplewood NJ ("The Numismatist" periodical). On his 1941 SS-5, he worked at Peabody Land & Loan at the same address. On the 1942 "Old Men's Draft" registration, he was self-employed, occupation not stated, at that address. Edward was an illustrator of various books, mostly about magic tricks. He was national president of the Society of American Magicians (SAM) 1972-73. Edward died 1 Jul 1983, per a brief notice in the "NY Times" from the SAM, with no mention of a funeral home or cemetery. On the SSDI,his last residence was Short Hills, Essex County NJ. His son, Edward Victor, died before him in 1978, possibly in Short Hills. Lily MISHELL died in 1993, last residence Short Hills. A Marlene ABRAMSON MISHELL, who was born 1931 to a Jewish family in Newark, died in 1986, residence Maplewood, Essex County (SSDI, SS-5); she may have been married to Edward Victor. I am trying to find out the burial places of the above people. They are not at any of the NY-NJ Jewish cemeteries with online databases, on Jewish Data, or on the JOWBR. Although Edward E's first wife was Catholic, his parents & second wife were Jewish, so he may be buried at a Jewish cemetery. It may not be possible to trace Ethel MISHELL, as she probably married and changed her name. I have written to 2 magicians' organizations and a Masonic lodge, connected with Edward E's name through Google, for any knowledge of his burial place but have not received a reply. The Bloomfield library did not find newspaper obituaries, other than the one mentioned above, or other information on any of the above people. The state of NJ will not provide a DC under 40 years old to a non-direct descendant. The Bloomfield library referred me to the Milburn NJ library, and I wrote to them about local newspaper marriage & death notices, but they have not replied. Does anyone have knowledge of the above people, or have additional ideas for research? Thank you in advance for any help. Nancy Goldberg, Los Angeles nancygoldberg05@...

Help finding Atlantic City cemeteries
#general
Thomas Lerman
I am trying to find a couple of direct ancestors that passed away about
1927 & 1930 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. I have checked with Rodof Sholom, Beth Kehillah, Beth Israel, Alliance, and Temple Emeth Shalom cemeteries. Someone suggested I check the latter three, but found out at least one or two are a fair distance. They definitely were living in the Atlantic City area. For example, Alliance is a fair distance away >from Alliance. They suggested trying more local cemeteries associated with synagogues. Actually, a few have suggested Beth Kehillah including Alliance, Temple Emeth Shalom, and others. I have checked with Rodof Sholom and Temple Emeth Shalom more than once. Does anyone have ideas for other possible cemeteries in the Atlantic City area? I am trying to find them so that I can get the exact date that they passed on. I did find two of their sons and daughter-in-laws are interred in Rodof Sholom, but they passed on about 30 years later. Unless you believe the information is of a general nature, please reply privately. Thank you in advance, Thomas Lerman
